Private E-mails?

Anyone with a brainstem understands that emails are not private. ESPECIALLY if you work for a government agency or taxpayer-funded institution. Never have been...never will be.

Neither are posts on a message board.

Once again, this does not make it right. Are you up for wire-taps too? How about video cameras in your bedroom? Fcuk, just allow the government to implant a chip in you so that they can control your every move. Don't laugh, if we don't get these pin heads out of office and take back our country, sh*t like this could be on the horizon.

the only way that will happen is if fiscally conservative libertarians take over, and people quit confusing local government with federal government.

Maybe he wants the ability to petition his government to provide the emails/directives that point to them authorizing and conducting such actions? I hope we are not forgetting the infringements of the Bush Administration's Patriot Act here, those "pinheads" have been gone for almost 4 years now. Obama's crime is not getting rid of them. Please lets NOT make this turn into another political thread!

This one at least did not start out as a football thread, and will likely get moved soon. I hate when a football thread gets turned into a political one.

I agree totally. Just to clarify my position, I am a libertarian, NOT a republican. I am for fiscal responsibility, ending entitlements, and less intrusion from the federal government.

I believe employers should have the right to monitor emails on domains that they pay for and provide employees to conduct their work. As a government employee, the government and tax payers, should have the right to the content of emails that are used to conduct government business if there is a belief of misconduct or violation of P&Ps. I also describe myself as a libertarian and believe that government is larely inefficient and uneffective in many (not all) areas. I believe in accountability and the rights of the employer (taxpayer) to have access to information to analyze performance and ethics. If the employee has a problem with that, they can find a job elsewhere. I'm not going to pay their salary...

I don't agree with the Missoulians use of this content as they are taking exerpt from what is probably hundereds of emails between these guys. I believe the media often abuses their rights to this information and can often take things out of context. It is unfortunate that the media seems to be taking sides to issues and reporting only information that supports their side.

This is not "government" and it's not NEW. It's called the Freedom of Information Act. You should read it.

man when I brought up an early email server in 1993 or something like that, we told all employees there was no such thing as private company email even then. If you wanted privacy don't do it at work where the company owns everything

Bullschmickle. The FIA has nothing to do with government intrusion on ones life. Go back to sleep.

What I find funny is people who think that government heavy handedness is the exclusive property of the democratic party. Both parties do it when they are in power. One wants to intrude into your business and finances, and the other wants to intrude into your bedroom.

I don't consider this an intrusion like this however. Whomever owns the computer should be allowed to email. Government computer, the people should have access to the information. Private company, owner of the company. You pay the bills, you own the information.

I wasn't aware the Missoulian was owned by the government.

The FIA was the act that allowed the release of the emails to the public. Isn't that what this thread is about and what sparked your rant on gov't intrusion Growler? The Patriot Act has nothing to do with this. If the Patriot Act were abolished tomorrow, the public could still access to these emails due to the FIA.

Like I said, it has nothing to do with the government and isn't new. Predates 9/11 and the Patriot act by just a tad more than 35 years.

Football, what is football? Speaking of the wide spread flow of info today and politics;

I just watch Senator Jon Tester (the "farmer") driving a tractor in a parade. He nearly ran over the two young girls carrying the banner in front of him. I wonder if seeing that on YouTube will help his campaign?

Stop trying to stop sense to him. What's scary is that somebody who knows so little about FOIA requests, and who thinks the Patriot Act have something to do with them, is allowed to vote.

I thought O'Day and Foley came across badly in the e-mail correspondence. Foley is always looking for a way to spin things, and people just don't like things spun.

It's the job of those in charge of press relations and outside communications to work to ensure that communications are accurate, and to anticipate how they will look in the press.

I thought Foley and O'Day were trying to get things right. The university has said some stupid things, and let some inaccurate things get released. They should have been paying more attention to this all along.

Based on what's out in the public now, there have been no gang rapes involving UM athletes in recent time period we're talking about. If police/prosecutors don't believe there is enough evidence to pursue and/or don't believe the accuser, and a university panel votes 7-0 not to expel a student accused of that, then there has not been a gang rape. A accuser with no evidence (and in this case it looks like there was contrary evidence), and a mischaracterization or misstatement by a dean based on talking to an accuser, doesn't equal gang rape.

Yes, the DOJ is investigating because they accept the findings of the Missoula PD, the DA office, and the UM administration and campus police.

Sometimes you should just not post, because obviously you're not dealing with reality in this instance.
