Preliminary Game Report

I didn't notice any, other than some minor things where I think the player came back into the game shortly thereafter. The Griz finally have a strength coach who with a conditioning/lifting routine that can prevent injuries. (For those of you who don't understand subtile senses of humor, think before you respond.)

I thought the NFL rule was the plain, and the ncaa rule was whether the ball hit in the end zone or was touched by a player in the end zone or touching the goal line. Or something like that. Am I wrong?

In NCAA, it only matters where the ball is on a punt.

Also, new rule this year on kickoffs...any fair catch caught between the goal line and 25 will place the ball at the 25. Best to get to practicing the squib kicks.

So, do I have the rule backwards, or what is the NFL rule?

NCAA: it matters not where the player is located, only where the ball is.

NFL: a player touches the goal line and enters the end zone and touches a punted ball ball still in the field of play will cause a touchback.

Odd difference, and I've always preferred the college rule. However, the NFL approach is almost certainly easier for the officials to judge. Unless you're positioned just right -- i.e., looking along the goal line from the side -- it's hard to determine a "breaks the plane" situation. You almost need a camera running back and forth on a cable right over the goal line.

Also that UNI punt downed at the 1, his foot was in the field when he jumped and hit it back, shouldn’t have been a touchback. Griz got one there. There was 1 phantom PI, but the other 2 were legit on replay. A few holds when uni QB ran outside, plus 3 times number 74 was moving before the snap. Those plays were 2 TD and the 2 point conversion. Changes distance and probably play calls there. Not sure how the heck the obvious motion was missed. Overall, solid win and a lot to work on. Coaches always say the most improvement comes between first and second game. Get a cupcake this week that hopefully get a lot of timing down and bodies in. No injuries would be fantastic as well. Go Griz!

In collage, you can’t bat the ball out of the end zone. If the ball breaks the plane at all it is a touchback, and it clearly did in this case.

I reviewed the replay. Live looked like was still in. When I rewatched it, agree that was obviously past the line.

Nice win. Terrific first half. The win was never in doubt, but the lack of O and not as good D kept the crowd around in the 2d half.

I thought the Griz would probably be good this year, but they are better than I thought they'd be. Many things to improve, tho.

Sneed looked very good, passing and running. Think he was 66% passing. Had some nice throws, especially early. Missed some throws that shouldn't have been missed. Nice runner. Ran to often as the game went on, in my view. Juked a few people out, including no. 7 in the first half by the NI bench. Great run for TD. As Colter said, Baker Mayfield-like.

We need Calhoun back. He would have gotten more yards from the same plays, and gotten more yards out of passes. Eastwood was solid.

No turnovers by Griz. NI was so lucky not to have a bunch of fumbles lost and another pick or two.

UM special teams were terrific. Great punt and KO coverage. Nice punts by Williams, except a late 33 yarder. Good kicking except for the first extra point. Nice recovery by Semenza after that. Nice returns. JLM could have let a late long punt go in the EZ. He has great hands and is a very good returner. Tough kid too.

Very good tackling by the Griz. Better than almost all of the games the past 3 years.

Buss started and seemed to get about 20 or 25 plays. He seems to be healthy. Oh, actually he told me he is.

Nice game by the receivers. A couple missed catches.

I thought the corners and safeties had nice games. Nice coverage almost all the time. Calhoun is terrific. Made a few mistakes that he probably won't again. I didn't agree with some of the PI calls. Other than hat, thought the refs were good.

Obviously, no running game. Think the running backs had 19 yards. Don't know the problem. Not sure how to evaluate the o-line. They didn't seem to break down, but there were no holes for running. Only 1 sack given up by Griz.

NI had 47 total yards in first half, and 1 in the first 39 minutes. Then came alive. Changed QB's too in 2d half.

Great play by Griz and throw by Curran to Bingham for the TD.

Bobby was pleased with the game and the play of the team, but said there were a lot of bonehead mistakes in the second half. Said there was no panic or concern by the team in the second half when things got closer.

Williams averaged 41 yards in 7 punts.

Very nice and loud crowd. 25,018 attendance. The crowd and stadium got kudus from the Wheeler Harris family, who was stuck watching Alabama games last season. 3.25 hr game. Long game.

Up with MT Boys to the student section was nice, but I thought they should have done it for the parents too.

Couldn't resist the name-dropping, huh? It is creepy the way you chase young men around Missoula.

Growler,

You've already been outed on the board. I know you can't control yourself but why? Why do you write such inflammatory posts to others? You're just asking to get band again.

Being the mentally ill jackhole that we've all come to known, please carry on :thumb:

Sorry, no name-dropping here. Just a football reoport from attending the game, going onto the field after the game and talking to multiple people, and looking at the stats.

What's creepy is the way you talk about your imaginary friends, claim to have watched practices when you haven't, claimed to have talked to egrizzers when you haven't, claimed to have been at the Mo Club when you weren't, and pick your butt in public, including at practices. And you believe the 3d team qb is going to be the answer at qb in a few weeks. Really, Growler, that is about the dumbest thing every said on egriz.

Finished watching our recording an hour or so ago. If I'm right, here's a MAJOR plus -– not yet mentioned as far as I can tell. Somebody correct if I'm wrong, but ... I do not recall any serious injuries. Guys got dinged here and there, but nothing that might keep them out of the next game. (Seems like somebody -- Ward? -- went through concussion protocol, but he was back in there later.)

If true, that's huge after a game where both teams were playing all out and hitting hard. How many opening games have we seen where somebody was on crutches before the end?

Good point! Although it didn't seem to me that Buss was in much the 2nd half - and our D suffered. Calhoun went down with what looked like cramps, but came back. Wasn't quite as effective when he returned, IMHO, but then again he played lights out in 1st half. He is going to be a great addition at CB as has been noted elsewhere.

As far as Sneed goes, my observation was that he was more accurate throwing left than right. A liitle too much arm going to his right. Lee dropped 2 very catchable passes. Eastwood was very good at the throws he got.

I wonder if Sneed running for that TD early got him in a mode where he felt he could run like a RB. I'm sure that will be looked at on film. But let's face it - the last 3 throws were cool as a cucumber under pressure (not from the D but from the situation) . Sneed always looked like he was in charge and comfortable.
And kudos to the receivers who caught those last 3 passes that sealed the win. :thumb:

Sneed was constantly working his throwing shoulder after that awful unblocked hit he took as releasing the ball. Kept throwing on the sideline and stretching the shoulder; hope he's all right this week.

When you have a QB who runs as much as Sneed does, you wonder how long it will be before he becomes injured. I cringe every time he decides to run. I have not seen him do the QB slide yet, to limit the hits he takes. I hope he learns to do it sooner rather than later!

Yet the injury kem is talking about happened on a pass, not a run.
