Post Game: tough loss

What a gut-punch. I had hopes we could hang with PSU but this game unfortunately turned in to something we’ve seen too often this season and it got away from the Griz. Let’s face the basic facts here, Portland State is a better team than Montana this year. The stats showed it, the polls showed it, and the game we saw today showed it as well. Damn right I thought the Griz could win this. I’m bummed they didn’t.

Don’t give up on the Griz this year. I just hopped on the board to see threads about firing coaches, bashing players, the end of the dynasty (as if we had one right now?), the end of the world, and other such nonsense. We win one game in convincing fashion against a team with a crap defense and suddenly we’re world-beaters again? The process takes time. There’s still time this season to salvage the year – yeah it’s a small margin but it still exists. The seniors on this team deserve your continued support, heck all the players do. The effort these kids put in to every season deserves ongoing support. We show up to a handful of games and then bitch and moan about what we don’t like on a message board. Meanwhile these guys start working in January to get to this point. Be at your best Griz Nation – it’s needed right now.

On to the game, what more can be said? I looked back at my thoughts on keys to a victory:

1. Do your “1/11” – Again it looked to me like too much lost containment. Wide open cutback lanes and wide open edges. Arm tackles, fooled on fakes, and giving up big plays. The big play was the enemy tonight, as it’s been a lot this season. PSU’s touchdowns came on plays that were 41, 46, 35, 49, and 37 yards. Insult to injury the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th touchdowns all came on 3rd down.

2. Control the clock – almost 34:00 TOP for PSU

3. Positive turnover margin – nope

4. Punish Kuresa when he runs – didn’t really see that, he ran wild tonight. 119 yards and 2 TDs.

5. TD’s in the red zone – Griz had a chance to make it 21-14 headed into the half. The weather probably caused this but a TD goes right through Horner’s hands and we’re kicking a fieldgoal a few plays later. In the grand scheme of things who knows – I see a TD there as a bigger momentum swing of UM.

6. Win on 3rd down. They scored 28 points on 3rd down plays. PSU was 7 of 14 on 3rd down. Montana was 7 of 21.

7. Buck the road griz trend of execution errors, starting slow, etc. Unfortunately that happened again.

8. Better adjustment on offense headed in to the game. Try to recognize that just like the span of the NDSU to CPSLO game that the span of UND to PSU would require more adaptation to make sure PSU doesn’t have a blueprint of how to stop the offense. It sure seemed early they had it figured out. Use that safety #8 as a center fielder to grab deep passes and jam the WRs. Worked to perfection for them.

--------------

So where do we go from here? The Griz head to Pocatello for another dangerous offense to test them. I sincerely hope that Gus is back and ready to go. Simis had a bad day today and no it wasn’t entirely on him but this offense isn’t designed to be run this slowly and be so simple. Gus is the guy that can make it go. With him under center we’ve got a shot, I do believe that.

From the game a few things I noticed beyond the typical hang-wringing stuff we’ve seen on here.

- Kendrick Van Ackeren and Nate Harris kept their side of the field much more secure. KVA has played lights out this whole season and kept it rolling tonight. It wasn’t a perfect game but he had some clutch stops and plays most of the night. Again he lead the team in tackles.

- Josh Buss another great ST tackle. He’s going to be a star for us in the years to come.

- John Nguyen was used better in this offense tonight, a key screen pass that worked well and some good runs. I was most impressed with his power on one play that took a short gain into a 9 yard rush. Still needs to work on fielding all punts though – maybe the rain and fear of dropping it got to his head?

- Incredible catch by Keenan Curran

-----------------

Here’s how I see it; if we can get Brady back and build some confidence at ISU we’ve got a beast of a last two games, but the tougher of the two is at home. If the Griz can dig deep and win 3 in a row they’ll finish 7-4 and with signature wins over NDSU and EWU. That’s playoff-worthy.

I know a lot of fans right now are saying no way that happens. But I believe it can. I know the team believes it can as well, and that’s good enough for me. This team needs its main signal caller back, it needs to focus on cleaning up execution errors, and it needs to play these last 3 weeks as if each game is their last one.

Rally time – let’s get it GRIZ!

Good post! Hopefully we can get Brady back for next week and get on a roll. PSU is a very good team and handed it to us on all facets of the game. This season has been an emotional roller coaster full of peaks and valleys. I stand fully behind our players but like you I need to come to terms with my expectations of them for the rest of the season.

Really wish UM didn't have another year of scholly reductions. We could sure use those extras. Hopefully stitt can get this thing going next year. As for this year, the Griz likely will lose at least one of their next 3 and may finish the season in the area of 6-5. Hopefully the guys finish with a winning season. Hopefully they win all three and surprise us all.

Spot on with Gus, he is the best quarterback they have on the roster to run the offense. I sure hope he is back in the line up next week against Idaho State. I think we match up with a pass happy team a little better as opposed to a big offensive line group that runs right at you (sorry MSU this is not you). The Griz have lost to Cal Poly, Liberty, Weber St., and now Portland St. I don't see any teams like this left on the schedule.

Playoffs? Anyone see the Big Sky standings? Eastern, Southern Utah, Northern Arizona, Portland State all ahead of the Griz. A lot of things would need to happen for a playoff bid just in the Big Sky Conference let alone other conferences.

For Griz to vault up on the Big Sky Conference standings:
1. Griz win out
2. Eastern Loses against NAU and Griz ; win vs Portland State
3. Southern Utah loses the rest: they face the Cats; NAU and Portland State
4. Portland State Needs to lose against Northern Colorado and Eastern

This would put a huge cluster at the top Griz, Portland State, Eastern all tied for the conference crown.

So Grab your popcorn....most likely Griz will be home for playoffs. :(

Last week I thought if we could beat psu we had an outside chance of winning the conference because I liked our chances against isu, ewu, and msu. The only thing that changes is we have zero chance of winning the conference but still have the others to play. Beat isu and Missoula will be rockin the next week. The big question is can Stitt get his team up for msu? I don't think he understands the magnitude and overall importance of that game. I agree with B/W......the seniors on this team deserve our undivided support at this point. They have worked hard through difficult times and have left all on the field. I have no idea what it's like in the locker room right now but one has to think they are a lot more upset than most of us.

7-4 is doable but won't be easy and becomes a lot harder if the fans aren't on board.

Griz win out they're in. Plain and simple. 5-2 in conference, 7-4 overall with wins over EWU, MSU & NDSU. They're in. Book it.

I've got to hand it to the PSU game plan. They came in with the idea of shaking up the young QB. Jam the receivers to cause problems with the timing of early-anticipation throws. Have the safety watch the QB's helmet direction to see where the ball is going. Check, three interceptions to start the game. I'd bet they intentionally pushed the limit of how far off the the line of scrimmage you can contact the WR, and the refs let them for most of the first qtr. Good plan, Simis was unable to make the quick, decisive throw all game long. I am sure the rain didn't help.

We did the same to the young NAU QB, worked then too.

The O-line is looking better each game.

B. Wahlberg I appreciate your loyalty, candor and optimism. Way too many front runners!

Over at Wombat Nation, they are suffering, blaming the Billings Gazette, the Great Falls Tribune, Ash, Fields, and Prukop.
Face it, Dakota had a horrible game. 2 bad throws for interceptions, 2 intentional grounding penalties, one really costly fumble, bad reads and decisions all day. He was OUT of synch. Last play of offense was 4th and short. Cramsey calls a pass on an sideline route (toughest one to complete in fb), and Dakota stood like the Statue of Liberty and threw into the defense and the pass was blocked. Where's the legs, the scramble, the run when it is that short for the first down?

On the other hand, they have TWO threads going about the Griz arrests.

The Griz were handicapped at Portland by the rain. Any passing team would be. That's pretty much the story. Makena has the ability to develop a good running game to match with his pass ability. He needs a coach that can step up to his ability. And that won't be there with Brady.

I have to watch the game again. In part, because of the rum and cokes that started with the Wombat game beginning at noon. In part because I could not tell exactly what the Griz offense was. It wasn't the offense of the previous weekend and given the rain, perhaps it couldn't have been, but I'm just not sure what the strategy was.

Montana is not making the playoffs this year, book on it..

....and what kind of win would it be over Montana State? There not very good either..

Tough loss, but not as tough as the Weber State loss. BW, as much attention as you pay to this team, where is some critiquing of the negatives? I understand you are a positive kind of person and fan, but got to admit we have seen a lot of bad this year and the last few seasons.
