Great game by the Griz. They're a different outfit with McDowell at the helm. Both sides of the ball are playing with a lot more urgency and, seemingly, belief. And it seems that they're growing each week.

I'm rooting for both MT teams to beat up Idaho in their own building and let them know where they sit.

A few notes from the game.

Idahos fans were wonderful save a few college kids that were idiots.

It’s hot as fuc k in the hut.

The line to get in was somehow longer than the line to get in the NEZ entrance. (I’m still going to complain in 2 week)

Really felt that no lead was going to be safe even while Idaho had 0. Their wide receivers are really good.

You probably shouldn’t have stayed home, great experience.

My son and his wife went to the game, said the same thing...very hot in there. Also, mentioned their crowd did not understand when to get load and quiet.

Good report as always BW. My “unsung heroes” of the games were Gubner, covered in blood, taped up and sent back out there to wreak havoc in the middle and take the perpetual double team block, opening it up for our various blitzes. Harris, for solid contain play at his end spot forcing stuff inside to (see Gubner) and good pressure on McCoy all night. And on the other side of the ball, MacGynnis (sp?) for going all “Blind Side” on that dude, drawing the penalty and being a general fire eating badass last night.

Gotta throw Glasgow in the "unsung heroes" group 3 for 3 on 40+ field goals!

You would think the Big Sky Conference would put together a decent officiating team for a nationally televised game. Maybe even a good video review crew.

This is a crucial win for Montana that could have easily been ruined by the conservative play calling in the second half.

I wonder if Idaho has a hurry up offense. They marched back in the second half while still burning a lot of clock.

Idaho is not built to come from behind.

We’d need one barely competent commissioner for this, and we don’t have it. We just don’t have it.

The first 28 minutes of that game were an absolute CLINIC of how to play football. On both sides of the ball. The last 32 minutes felt like we were hanging on for dear life. That happens to coincide with when Walker went out (and never returned), but I couldn’t really see whether Pease had already gone “conservative” at that point or whether he changed game plans because of the new left tackle (Paniloff).

Either way, if we play like the first 28 minutes, we’re gonna win a shiteload of games. If we play like the last 32 minutes, it’s gonna be 8-3, 1 and done in the playoffs…

Those first 28 were a joy to watch…all the stuff we’ve been talking about the team needing to accomplish and they checked off every single one.

The team we are watching now is completely different than the team we watched the first four games of the season. The changes the coaches have made is a testament to their experience. Offensively, it is clear the staff geared the offense around a QB ( Vidlak) with an elite arm ,talented pass catchers and an experienced OL that could provide dominant run scheme blocking. This has proven not to be the case. The staff turned to a late addition to the program (Clifton) to generate some sort of offensive production. Although rough and unpolished in some ways, he has injected enough playmaking to keep opposing defenses off balance. Making this type of change mid stream is extremely difficult and again my compliments to Brent and the offensive staff.
Defensively, I'm impressed with some of the subtle changes Bradford has made with this side in recent games. The ability to generate a consistent pass rush with only four rushers last night was huge. This allowed the defense to be more multiple with coverage which kept Idaho of balance and frustrated.
Moving forward in the off season, the biggest priority will be recruiting better athletes on the O line and D line. We are currently very thin on both sides. We will also need to hit the portal to find a QB. I'm not confidant with any of the options currently on the roster. This QB needs to be someone with pocket awareness and mobility (Sneed type).
It has been frustrating watching this team play the first four games, However the evolution of this team the last three games has been exciting.

I watched the game with a friend last night (cat fan, no less) who kept commenting that if the Griz rushed 5 it would close the gap that McCoy kept squeaking through. Is this schematically possible with this defense?

If we had better secondary coverage then absolutely. But our pass D is still the biggest weakness of the team. If we put 5 on the line that secondary would have torn us apart. The option that we did a lot was ironically what we all have said to get rid of was that 3-3-5. McCoy really didn’t have any idea who was going to blitz at any given time. The 3-3-5 does have that built in spy so to speak cuz at any time a LB can pull off and not blitz. McCoy didn’t scramble as successfully as he did in previous games I have watched. I think the 3-3-5 is still not a good option but it did have its moments in the game. Now against the cats, 4 man or 5 man front all day long cuz we know that neither Chambers or Mellott can throw that well.

That might not be correct. Their last possession in the first half clearly showed they have a good hurry up offense. I thought that series set the tone for the second half but was astonished at their 2nd half play calling. They burned way too much time.
