Post Game: The offense comes alive

Simis said that with the looks they were getting from North Dakota's defense, he knew they had the ability on the outside with Henderson and Jones to break off big plays.

The Grizzlies faced a lot of pressure coming into the game with two home losses already this season. Simis may have been a third string at the start of the year, but he handled the pressure with the confidence of someone who has been ready all year.

"As a quarterback, you have to be confident in yourself," Simis said. "I knew when I got my opportunity I was going to play well, so that's just one of those things. It's important to have that confidence."

The precision shown by the sophomore on the day, particularly the pass to Roberts, surprised Simis himself, as he said he threw better in the live-situation than he did during practice.

"It's different than practice. In games, you just kind of let loose," Simis said. "Honestly, I didn't make nearly as many good throws like that in practice. Then, on that same play it just kind of worked out. I just shut down, was confident and let the tools I was given physically do the work."

His next touchdown pass found Ellis Henderson streaking towards the north end zone, and Simis once again delivered a ball that only his receiver could catch to give Montana their first lead.

As the game went progressed, coach Bob Stitt said that they allowed Simis to make more checks on his own. On his third touchdown pass, the defense forced Simis out of the pocket, but he delivered a well-weighted ball to Henderson, who broke a tackle and found pay dirt on a 63-yard score.

"That was one where I probably could have done a different protection, I didn't get the best call in there," Simis said of the play. "John (Nguyen) made a great block, he picked up the dude that was free so I just had to step to the side and I saw Ellis got on top so I just had to throw it out there for him."

Taylor Barton, Root's analyst, noted at the half that the Griz were using a very simplified offense. He made a very nice use of game film to demonstrate it. "With a new quarterback, you want everything as simple as possible and not have him have to look around. Here (using the screen slo-mo with the camera looking down field from Simis' back) you see he's got his receiver in the end zone, but look here, and he points to the blurred image (camera focus is downfield) coming into the midfield. He's got his endzone receiver in sight, but if he was blocked, here's a midfield receiver coming across in the same field of view, at just the right time. Makes it very simple for the quarterback, he doesn't have to look around, and both options are right there in front of him. Very nice play."

I had thought that Makena had trained with Barton at one point (he operates a quarterback school), but couldn't find any references for that.

A nice collection of game photos, here:

Can't find a photo of Tyler Lucas hurdling that ND defender though. Reminds of Dan Moore.

some quick observations:

---I thought gamboa learned not to rely on his speed so much after chasing Santiago for a while,,,he is used to being as fast or faster than the backs. probably reason lebsock got to play more as he was gap sound.

--we fielded punts and kick offs for many additional net yards saved.

-- no or very few bubble screens and used our talent in jones and Henderson on outside.

A good fun game to attend. Liked two guys back on the punt return and having another blocker up front. Wasn't so sure about the Simis running the ball so much with limited backup, but he came out of it good.

I think many people are over looking a lot of why we were so successful yesterday. The blocking scheme went away from stretch blocks allowing our lineman to get a hat on their guy and drive them back, which led to positive yards on first downs. Then putting in Horner to help block and our backs were there picking up blitzes. The oline actually was driving the d line backwards and we have not seen that most the season.
We also had great field position most the day, Ellis and Jamal back returning kicks had our best returns of the season, and I love Stitt putting two guys Ellis and John back on punt returns actually led to punt return yards.
Coach showed that he can make adjustments to give the boys a better chance to succeed, not sure if the long ball is always the best as it is a 50 50 play, Makena threw it great though, and just took what the defense was giving.

It was a great game and we saw a lot more attitude out there from our boys, and great to see Holmes with the strip sack, hopefully he gets a few sacks next week, he is an absolute beast out there.

Good post as always, Brint.

My Gameballs:

Simis: nuff said. One damn impressive game for a first start from a #3 QB. We saw today why he was so hyped as a recruit.

OLine: perhaps their best game in 2 years. Great pass pro, and there were actual running lanes -- LANES!! -- opened up. Let's hope they're gelling; sometimes it takes young linemen some time.

KO Return team: Set the Griz up with great field position most of the day. An area that had been a disappointment all year looked like we expected it might with our athletes.

Defense: Play one was admittedly awful. But they didn't let it affect them and they played sound D the rest of the way. I agree with Brint that early on, tackling was a substantial problem. After that, I was confident they were going to snuff drives and get off the field. It's great to have that feeling again.

Wideouts: Finally some separation! Showed today why they're a real weapon.

Staff: loved the adjustments. Loved that they allowed MS to play his game rather than vice versa.

Very good win when one was really needed. On to PDX!!

So, everyone gets a game ball?

I hope I can find that picture. I have the Dan Moore picture in my office in Atlanta. Lucas is an athlete, hope Stitt finds away to utilize him

That photo is one of most awesome sports photos of all time.

Found it!

Tyler Lucas did something very similar yesterday. Being something of a photographer myself, how the photographer got the depth of field on the photo, on a rapidly moving play ... miracles of autofocus I guess.

Getting the background massively out of focus is easy to get on fast action shots, the shorter the time the aperture is open the shorter the depth of field. AN d you need the burst setting on a very fast shutter speed to get the 'perfect shot' The photographer probably took a thousand frames that night. Getting a fast action AND a background in focus, now that would be a trick.

And, you need to be shooting at Dan Moore going the other way, with a telephoto, from the end of the field!

Deal, but only if I can share it with you!

I am very late to comment on this game, thanks to a hangover and a cracked computer screen. The hangover was due to drinking in joy of the GRIZ finally putting together a great overall game and putting a team away as they should. I think I had close to 12 Cold Smokes Saturday :)

I was a little upset and worried when UND started the game with an 80 yard run by Santiago. That kid is one hell of a find for them. He will be wrecking Big Sky defenses what will seem like forever. Good thing the defense adjusted well and played great rest of the game, and the offense finally found their big plays consistently.

Regardless of how this season plays out, GRIZ fans have been treated to 2 great debuts this years. Coach Stitt getting the W in an epic game against NDSU in his GRIZ coaching debut will not get any better as for GRIZ coaching debuts. The 2nd debut for the ages is the starting debut of Makena Simis!!! WOW, talking about setting expectations out of this world, 6 TD passes in his 1st start!!!! It does not get better than that. It is hard to not be excited about this future. GRIZ fans may never witness to 2 better debuts than we did for Stitt and Simis. Cherish what we experienced in those games. I know I will.

Before the UND game, I had heard the GRIZ WR were super excited to have Simis be throwing them passes, now we see why. He throws the most catchable ball with pretty good accuracy. He also puts faith in his WR's to make the plays. Simis is a great thrower. His arm strength is a notch below Gustafson, but appears to be much more consistent in passing. He is also an athletic runner verses a scrambler. He looks equally comfortable running and throwing. To me, he is a playmaker!!! He also seems to have the hard to come by "IT" factor to his play and demeanor. The "IT" factor is something that cannot described, and very hard for an athlete to have consistently. He sure had "IT" against UND. Whatever it is, I hope he continues to play with IT. Simis sold me further when I saw how excited he gets when his teammates make a big play. I loved seeing him sprint down the field to join in the celebration and congratulate his teammates. He also is not afraid to deliver a blow when he is running the ball. I can see why teammates love playing with this guy. He has the intangibles that are positively contagious for a team. He is the kind of player that teammates will want to fight for and run through brick walls for.

I watched the game on DVR on Sunday, Simis and his WR's proved what they are capable of when they are on the same page, and it was a thing of beauty. Credit the coaches for tweeking the offense in having bigger WR's on the field more often. Horner, Roberts, and Carlson played a huge role in pass protection. Granted, they are not the size of a traditional TE, but did just enough in helping block to give SIMIS time to make the plays he did. It was nice to see the offense was centered on our main play makers instead of spreading the wealth around too much It looks to me Stitt is embracing the luxury of having 3 playmaking WR's in Henderson, Jones, and Roberts (I hear he has joined the other 2 in getting NFL looks, maybe that can be confirmed by someone else). Also credit the OL and HB's, as an unit they picked up blitzes very well. The HB's looked solid running the ball north and south too It appeared to me the team utilized the bye week as well as a team could. Overall, that was one damn impressive GRIZ team. We finally got to see a GRIZ team many of us have been expecting to break out. Then again, a few of us did expect to see it take until end of October to start seeing the offense hitting stride.

If the offense can continue hitting stride and finding consistency, look out!!! PSU will be a great measuring stick game for our offense and defense. PSU appears to be legit to me They are strong on both sides of the ball. Our defense has to be prepared for a lot of misdirection plays and will need a lot of discipline. PSU runs a great variety of offensive schemes. Their defense has been damn good for the most part. However MSU's offense did make PSU's defense seem ordinary. To me, the PSU game is the decisive game as for our QB situation. A great performance by Simis would make it hard for Stitt to relinquish the job back to Gustafson. It is an interesting and good situation for the GRIZ to have though. Gustafson has the arm and intelligence that are huge positives for Stitt. Meanwhile Simis is the most well rounded athletically and can do a bit of everything. I feel Simis has a lot that cannot be measured. He has intangibles that are hard to come by, along with some great talent as well. If Simis can show some magic and consistency against this PSU defense, I have a feeling the QB job will be his even after Gustafson returns. Seriously, how could a coach not be sold if Simis can play well in back to back to games? I feel there is some magic and something special to this kid. Yes, I like what Gustafson brings as for being a strong armed QB, but I feel there is more to Simis.

Rather it be Gustafson or Simis, I am sure excited to see if the GRIZ offense can continue to make the big plays and play with consistency. Defensively, I expect the GRIZ defense to put our offense in position to win the game. With that said, we will be needing a great day at QB. I believe Simis will do just that!!

As for the UND game, it was a great day for me. I had a lot of fun, enjoyed seeing the GRIZ kick some serious ass. An added bonus, my date's friends had room for a few extra fans in their section. I got to watch the 2nd half a few rows up on the 45 yard line on the west side of the field. By far the best view I've experienced at any GRIZ game. Turns out my date has some cool ass friends. Her and I had a great time. GO GRIZ!!

First of all congrats on your win. The hospitality of the city, hotel, restaurants, fans were superb. Many welcomed and thanks us for coming. The stadium and atmosphere was fantastic. I hope the best in your remaining games.

As far as the game. Our lack of depth show with our injuries to our QB and defense. Not making excuses but it would have been a much closer game.

Your match up with Portland will be interesting. That is were we lost 3 defensive starters in one game. We have not recovered from those injuries.

The Griz and Vikings should be a close game. I think both of your teams will make the playoffs along with the Eagles. maybe one other but not sure which other Big Sky team can step up.

Enjoy the rest of your season. You have a nice young QB.
