Post Game: The offense comes alive

Stitt showed he is adaptable, that the "pigheadedness, stubborn, obstinant, inflexible, ego driven soul" he displayed in the first half of this season, has at least been reformed. There MAY be hope, yet. Good effort today.

I think the struggles in the first half of the season was more due to shit just not working out. How in the hell Chalich was ahead of Simis in the depth chart is beyond me.

Stitt and Germer are putting on a clinic on making adjustments to weaknesses and deficiencies on our offense. Quarterbacks go down, offensive line continues to struggle, and we see adjustments and altered gameplans that make our QB feel comfortable and get the ball to our playmakers at WR. This is a fun game to watch, seeing Simis running down the field to celebrate those big TD's with the receivers was awesome...the guy brings some energy and enthusiasm. Such a night-and-day difference compared to what we were watching last year.

I'm sitting here basking in the Griz win, and absorbing some adult beverage. (Plus watching a couple of late games and following late scores.) Will sleep well tonight.

HOWEVER ... lot's on here (me included) thought UND was over-rated, despite having recently been ranked in the top-25. This game showed some great things about the Griz, but it also showed that UND was, indeed, over-rated. So, just as we should have not gotten too down because of the last (OT) loss, we should not get too juiced up over this win.

But of course. EVERY opponent we beat is overrated. It's been that way for the past 5-6 years. :roll: :roll: :roll:

When UND beat PSU earlier this season, they had 20 first downs to 10 for PSU. And they held PSU to 2-11 3rd down conversions. PSU is obviously a good team, but if we can build on today, I like our chances next week.

My Gameballs:

Simis: nuff said. One damn impressive game for a first start from a #3 QB. We saw today why he was so hyped as a recruit.

OLine: perhaps their best game in 2 years. Great pass pro, and there were actual running lanes -- LANES!! -- opened up. Let's hope they're gelling; sometimes it takes young linemen some time.

KO Return team: Set the Griz up with great field position most of the day. An area that had been a disappointment all year looked like we expected it might with our athletes.

Defense: Play one was admittedly awful. But they didn't let it affect them and they played sound D the rest of the way. I agree with Brint that early on, tackling was a substantial problem. After that, I was confident they were going to snuff drives and get off the field. It's great to have that feeling again.

Wideouts: Finally some separation! Showed today why they're a real weapon.

Staff: loved the adjustments. Loved that they allowed MS to play his game rather than vice versa.

Very good win when one was really needed. On to PDX!!

I enjoyed that the offense went N-s as opposed to throwing a bunch of bubble screens. I liked that Simis was able to make the big throws, under pressure! Go griz!

ROOT usually replays the game a few times during the week.

On my old fashioned DirecTv receiver I search for Montana and set it to record the season for Montana NCAA football and the Griz wrap up program during the week.

The Griz brought their big inside receiver in to play TE on many plays instead of splitting him out. It appeared to help the running game quite a bit. I don't recall seeing this formation at all this season.

They've shown this for a couple of weeks, but this week - Horner, Carlson & Roberts were all seen blocking from time to time in it. One of the reasons Chase & Caleb were held to one catch, were't on the field as often. Witness Roberts running the sweep.

Great all around effort today, including speculating on twitter what Stitt thought of Prater when Lucas played the last couple of series. Top points for stoking the rumor mill. Hope his phone is ringing off the hook.

PSU is the most complete offensive team we've faced this year. Going to be a dog fight for sure.

Maybe, NDSU and NAU are complete offensive teams with great and good quarterbacks. MSU made NAU and PSU look like the New England Patriots. I don't think there is a team in the FCS that can cover our receivers 1 on 1 like UND tried to do yesturday. If the Griz O-line can protect and Simis can throw like that they will be a tough out against anyone in the country. One game isn't a trend but it is a start. Can't wait for next weeks game.

looked like a good game for you guys yesterday. very impressed with your new qb. his deep balls seemed amazing. maybe i gave und too much credit but i thought this game would be much closer.

Makena: I didn't even know that happened until about five minutes ago, that's pretty cool, and I found out it was JJ's too. We're pretty good buddies and that will be kind of cool to talk to him about that.

Coach Stitt: He did a great job of executing the game plan. We gave him some options, and we had some other things that we didn't give him options. As we went through the game, we were allowing him to make some checks and he did a nice job, making some checks when he needed it, and he gave our receivers a chance. When people are playing man-to-man against you, you've got some threats outside, you've got some weapons outside, but you can't just throw the ball up and overthrow them. He gave our guys a chance, every single time and they made plays. And that's what I was proud of him about. He got us in a good protection and then he put the ball where he gave us a chance to make a play.

Coach, what are you going to do with the quarterback position as some of these guys get healthy?

Coach Stitt: Well, we take it week by week and it's awesome to have the starting quarterback sitting here right now, beside me. He did an awesome job and we'll keep moving forward and we'll continue to put the guys out there that help us win, I'm so proud of Makena right now, I don't want to talk about that kind of stuff, because he's just had the best day that a quarterback has ever had at this school and we're going to enjoy this thing.

We wanted to give our backup some time, and Tyler played quarterback for three years; he's been throwing all week, very athletic, and you could see that. He had a blast out there.

Makena: That was fun. You're constantly waiting for an opportunity. It's not the way I wanted to get my opportunity. Brady and Chad are some of my best friends. You don't want to see them get hurt. But, you've got to embrace it, no matter how your opportunity comes, and so yeah, it was fun.

Coach Stitt: First quarter we had 25 plays, and we ended up with 69, but the fourth quarter, we weren't trying to drive the ball, we were trying to grind some clock and not do anything crazy. I think the tempo was very good.

This game could have been uglier for UND. They sure put the ball on the ground. The TO margin could have been a lot worse.
