Post Game: The Grizzlies fall short

don’t see your frustration with “Missoula” kids. Jones is a good RB but we have talented ones to. Zach blocked a kick. Good for him. Yet he is not on the Griz because of his own stupidity not due to Bozeman recruiting prowess. Everyone knew he is an athlete but he unintentionally closed the door on any chance of becoming a Griz.

Several Bozeman kids end up as Grizzlies. Seems like Coyle was an exceptional get from Bozo. It goes both ways and some guys just don’t want to attend school in the town they grew up in. Sometimes they’re not recruited because coaches aren’t looking for that position. Wish every Montana athlete wanted to play for the Griz. Many do, not all can.
Jesus, I don't know why this is so difficult for some to comprehend.

Great write up and I'd say spot on. I do have a hard time saying the holding and pick six were errors. The holding call was bad luck. I watched the replay. 11 for the cats does this... watch worthams td. He gets hands inside and pulls, makes it look like the offensive guy is holding. Regardless, if that holding call is called, you could damn near call holding on every play in fcs d1 football. Some are called, but way more egregious holds are not called. The pick six... id say MW catches that ball 9/10 times. Credit dowler, hes been in the right spot at the right time a lot this year and is a stud. But that ball was tipped... right to him.

The trenches definitely favored the cats vs our d line. I wouldve liked bobby and our defensive staff to call the game more aggressively to shore this up, and bobby alluded to a conservative / simple called game defensively in the post game presser. Our offensive line allowed a few sacks, but hardly got overwhelmed by their d line, and we rushed for 180. We can improve there, but I thought it was pretty neutral in terms of matchup.

I'm eager for a playoff run, with the guys finally getting a week off. I thought Tolbert was definitely still hobbled yesterday, so maybe 2 weeks we'll see him closer to 100%, and my guess is we'll see kyon loud back. GO GRIZ 💪 💪💪💪
IMHO the shift to nothing but short outs and slants was a direct result of the first two early sacks. It became apparent AY wasn't going to have the time to let longer routes develop downfield. I don't think we threw a pass more than 15 yards past the LOS after the Davis TD. So, while it was a smart adjustment, it was at least indirectly the result of the O-line's inability to handle their D-line, with just a 4-man rush (mostly). And that was their defensive gameplan. Count on a 4-man rush still getting pressure freeing them up to have 2-high safeties to take away the deeper threats. Worked like a charm.

Spot on. Trying to stay ahead of chains utilizing screen game to slow D-line down. Thought that was a smart adjustment. We can throw and have success against these guys down field, but likely would've have given up more sacks and field position.

Id agree, wouldve liked to see more down field... but the offense performed well, doubled up MSUs average points allowed, and had your favorite holding call ever negated another touchdown. Brooks davis caught 10 balls, at least 4 of those outs he turned into much bigger plays. Also smart football.

I'm not complaining about the play calling (for the most part) and agree it was smart football. Just think the shift from a "downfield" approach to a "matriculate down the field" approach was a necessary change to the reality of the O-line deficiencies. That ball was getting out of AY's hands in 1-1.5 seconds almost continuously.

Edit: And if you'd told me before the game that we held MSU to 24 points offensively I'd have bet the HOUSE we win that game.

Bummer pick six. Such is life, give us another shot in the semis!!

I think where you are wrong is that nowadays many kids don’t. The issue is also that Adam Jones grew up a Griz and wasn’t given a chance. Eli or not he should be playing for Montana. Same with Dolan whose Dad was a national champion. Same with Rylan Ort. It’s a trend and it is not something that can be ignored.

You said “they lost all four”. Three ties are not losses, not even in soccer. Did you forget what you wrote?
In Bozeman, ties are (championship) wins.

On an unrelated note, is anyone else amazed that Lamson and Ah Yat were 44-52 for 361 yards and one tipped interception that was delivered on target?

After enduring the heartbreak of a close loss, I came away quite pleased with the way our Griz played.

Make no mistake, the Bobs are an excellent, well-coached team. Yet the bottome line is, we gave this game away via the missed field goal, the INT, and that critical holding call. We made mistakes; they did not.

And for all their defensive prowess, the Cats could not really contain any of our playmakers, all of whom ran up some impressive stats.

A big key for me was our inability to stop them when a penalty put them into a first and twenty in the fourth quarter. A stop there would have given us time for a final drive. Alas, our defense just couldn't get it done.

Final conclusion? They are as good as advertised. But so are we.

Eagerly hoping for a rematch!
