Post Game: The curse of the red turf has lifted

What an equally fun and stressful night! The Grizzlies put up 701 yards of total offense, I believe their 2nd best ever, and held on for dear life as EWU attempted to storm back late.

There's a lot to digest on this game and many things to be positive about, and worried about, however the biggest thing is this - the Griz won. They won in a place they've not won in for a long time, and they beat a team that was playing their "super bowl" of the season. We saw a Grizzly offense hit on all cylinders and score in the air, on the ground, and in clutch moments too. Yes the defense is a BIG worry.

Some thoughts:

- If you follow me on twitter it got entertaining post game, but I firmly believe it. Logan Fife is QB1 until he proves he isn't. The EWU defense was maybe the worst I've seen in a long time, however, it's not as if they weren't trying to make plays out there. Fife was dealing, 5 TDs, no INTs, he threw two touchdowns on 4th down. He wasn't perfect, there were some missed options downfield and a few plays where he needs to make better decisions as well. I saw him make a lot of throws in this game I've not seen Ah Yat make (yet). He played with patience, poise, and put the ball in spots that allowed this skilled WR corps the ability to make plays. It's hard to say what would've happened with Ah Yat today, the offense probably piles up yards too, but do some of the most clutch plays happen? We don't know what Ah Yat's timeline is, I guess we'll see, but for now, I'm riding with Fife.

- As many have opined here and elsewhere, this defense is in trouble. Weber and NAU are frisky, Davis is good, the Cats will be salivating to face this. I don't know what the "fix" is. Is it just the emotional level of the game and the pace that it got going - did things just get out of control fast? Sometimes it's just a momentum thing, and the defense simply could not find it. We saw Efton Chism, the best WR in the FCS, wide open a lot or being guarded by weaker links in the passing game. We saw EWU rush for 6.7 yards per carry. EWU went 9-14 on 3rd down too. I.... just don't know, I'm not sure what can happen with this group, is it baby steps? I do think Kyon Loud had a few nice plays, as did Jaxon Lee. There were little moments where good things happen. Can they build on that more?

- More special teams errors, yikes. The kick coverage unit gets caught running back before the ball is kicked - that sparked the tightening of the game. The onsides they were lucky that the ball just shot out of bounds. Another missed field goal too. ST errors could be a thing to reflect on here and realize they took a comfortable(ish) lead into a tight game.

- Eli Gillman isn't human and that was maybe one of the best games (considering the circumstances) Nick Ostmo has had. The O-line was grading the lane, hats off to those dudes.

- Glad to see White with a big game. Bergen played well but did it seem his top speed/explosiveness was a little limited? Seemed odd to see him get caught from behind.

- How about these Griz TEs? Erik Barker has 45 yards and 2 TDs, before tonight on his career he had 49 yards and 1 TD. Jake Olson catches his first career Griz TD as the final go-ahead score. Evan Schaefer hauls in a key conversion catch too.

- Big props to Griz Nation who showed out as well. It sounded like they were out in force, drank the stadium out of beer by halftime, and now have a night to party it up.

- It feels like we're going to need to get used to these types of tense games this year. It's just the way things are going to be.

---------

It wasn't pretty on one side of the ball and now we have QB debates brewing, but the Griz are 4-1, and 1-0 in conference. We've shook off the demon of that damned red carpet, and they're headed home for two monumental conference games that will need the fans behind them in a major way.

Go Griz!

Good overview, but not positive enough in my view. The D is playing a lot of players. I think they are gaining experience and getting better. There was some good downfield coverage. Only 1 sack by UM, but their qb knew there was pressure out there. He threw 58% instead of 79%. That's very positive. Screens hurt is earlier in the game, but not later. The O and Fife were very good, as you said.

I'm more than fine with this game. My guess is that the team and coaches are too.

One game at a time. Need to keep getting better. Last year's team continued to get better. Maybe the D can get consistently stout.

I like our guys, and our coaches.

Pretty disappointed that our coaches did not have the team ready for the EWU successful onside kick. Especially with our history in Cheney. This special team error reminded me of the fake punt blunder against NDSU last year. Both those plays completely got EWU and NDSU back into the games.

It was a successful onside kick that kept this stupid streak going several years ago in a game the Griz had in the bag. To fall victim to it AGAIN is just stupid.

I think EWU had the defensive players and coaches on tilt that whole 4th quarter. As you pointed out it was their Super Bowl. Luckily the guys on the offensive side of the ball really stepped up. Fife did look stone cold in there in the 4th (a hell of a game overall for a first start) and to have RB’s like Gilman, Ostmo, and Rocker, behind an improving offensive line was our saving grace.

I’m assuming Best has not saved his job to this point with a new AD and a renovation of the stadium on the way, he will want to bring in his own dude.

And the history of falling VICTIM to the onside kick, remember what Suck State did a couple years ago, Two, back to freaking back onside kicks!! You’d think a team in such a position as EWU was, of course they’d try an onside kick to steal a possession. Frankly I’m surprised they didn’t try it earlier!

Penalty discrepancy wasn’t good either and some poor personal fouls. Lots of defensive injuries for us too. Just not much going right on that side of the ball right now.

Not sure if Bergen got caught as the defender seems to come out of the screen so had some kind of angle.
Bergen veered left away from defender on his right, and went closer to defender on left. Probably wasn’t aware of defender on his left. Happens sometimes.

One thing to mention on top of this was the worrying amount of arm-tackles, after arm-tackle, after arm-tackle. All night; it was an arm-tackle master class.

If he cuts to the right instead of left the guy doesn't catch him.

I haven't seen offenseive production like that since Montana at PSU in 1999, which was fun until the Griz lost in overtime 50-49.

It was a little surprised that Montana didn't throw more into that one high look that EWU was using at it sold out to stop the run. I think that would have been soul crushing for the eags.

The game shouldn't have been as close as it was. If Montana cleans up some penalties in the first half, they're probably up 31-7 or 31-0. The eag fans probably driving back to Spokane early.

Fife did well. The other 10 Griz on the field had a lot do with that. He had excellent protection. Bergan, Harris, White, Barker, Gillman and Ostmo, I'd take those guys over anyone in FCS.

Pease called a great game.

I would like to see the Griz defensive front stunt more, but I'm sure there's a reason they don't.

Best would have been gone LAST year if EWU had the $$ to buy out his contract. They don’t. Thus another year of flailing. THIS is his last year under contract. He probably could have gone 8-4 and not saved his job.

As usual, a good summation. My take is simpler:
1. A road win in conference is golden.
2. The Griz proved they could win a shoot-out.
3. The Griz proved (again) that they can buckle down and win when the going gets tough.
4. Yes, the defense and ST need work, but at least some of that is fixable.

This. It seemed to me that the Griz got better at really wrapping up and bringing down ball carriers. But Saturday, I saw lots of throwing their bodies at guys to knock them over, or one-arm tackles. It just looked off. I don’t get it. Maybe it’s the speed of things getting out of hand, but I hope this isn’t the new normal.

These are awesome points.

Save last season - since Hauck's return, does last night also result in a win? I tend to think it doesn't. Despite issues/errors/concerns, good teams find a way.
