Post Game: SSDD (updated)

Posted this in another thread, but thought it was pertinent to this conversation.

Look, I know the cliche, "players play and coaches coach," however, as high as I was on Ty Gregorak at the start of the season, I'm officially off the bandwagon. Same for Delaney. I thought very highly of them at the start of the season, and now have no faith whatsoever. Same for Shalon Baker, who really should be fired, because it is his unit that is really the culprit right now. Delaney, however, is the coach who lost this game in the end, because he is a terrible coach when it comes to clutch situations, which rely upon intelligent game management. His team had the ball with 2 minutes to go in the game with a tie score. His defense had been unable to stop UND's offense for the entire game. Logically, he should be shooting for a game winning field goal, or, at the very least, running out the clock and going into overtime. He had the opportunity for overtime, and passed it up. Once we ran on 3rd down and didn't get the first, there was less than 1 minute in the game. He should run on the next play, and hope his team gets the first down, in which case he has a timeout to take. If we didn't get the first down, then he should have let the play-clock run down to nothing on 4th down, take the 5 yd penalty, THEN PUNT which would have left UND with around 20 seconds. Instead, Delaney chose to pass the ball, stopping the clock, and leaving UND 49 seconds, which proved to be plenty to scorch our helpless secondary.

Only issue there - UND had 3 timeouts, they would've just stopped the clock

The downhill slide started the day they hired Pflugrad. He simply could not control the players.

I had an old boss who once said "you can't fall out of the toilet"...we are officially there-

Time to start out climb out of the toilet with a new group of leaders...

Any chance of getting that Carroll College coach who won 6 national titles to come over to MSLA? We could sure use some good coaching.

The one who just about walked out on his team right before the season started b/c he didn't have the passion to keep coaching? No thanks.

No, I think he meant the one that likes the NAIA because he doesn't like having to follow "compliance" rules of an athletic organization.

But maybe then we could bring Lance Armstrong in as our QB?

Well he could at least oversee your "training" :o

we had better get on the phones to the junior college connections for some defensive backs, and safties,,,we do not have the talent to play at those positions i.e. 660 yards passing bsc records...so our talent pool is not very deep in the secondary,,,,plus coaching , why give up with 29 seconds to go with the kick return team using poehls (i think) to field the kick off...sure i would kick the ball to him too, if i were north dakota....this was just bad special team coaching, period........terrrible game for the defense, i can hardly wait to see what the coach says..........

What more can be said, once again the Griz showed they have all the ability in the world to keep up with an beat a team and once again they crumble away and lose late. This is the official nail in the post-season coffin and while there's still hopes of a winning season and retaining the Great Divide Trophy I think you'll be hard pressed to find anyone who thinks that will happen.

Once again the offense finds a groove that works - deep 1 on 1 attacks on their corners, so naturally as the game winds down, we scrap it. Once again a drop (Henderson this week, Hardy last week) kills a 3rd down conversion that would've kept the game going in the Grizzlies favor. Once again our safeties play like total dogcrap.

A buddy of mine listened to the UND post-game and their coach pointed out they knew our safeties were the weak spot and they planned to attack there. Hermanson and Tully were burnt badly alllllllll day long. And when they weren't getting beat horribly they were either on their ass after running up on a play-fake and getting fooled or putting on the a "great" display of horrid tackling. The pass D tightened up and Tully even nabbed a good pick... but then they fell right back apart when it was needed the most. I just don't know what to say. I have no clue if another off-season and more experience will improve the secondary. You see good plays here and there but the drop-off from last year is so deep it seems we're still falling, not even knowing how far the bottom is.

Playcalling... I am just sick of this. So if the Griz are going to suddenly go zone-read and clock kill then use McKinney - everyone knew Shay was handing off on the zone-reads late. Then of course Rosenbach goes to the well twice after a 1st down run when it's tied and that goes for just 1 yard. The offense falls flat once again when needed the most. I put part of these 4th qtr defensive failures on the fact that in the 4th qtr our offense cannot put together a drive to save its life.

I liked the opened up passing game, Shay had some good strikes (some bad ones too), Ellis Henderson, Sam Gratton, Bryce Carver, and Mitch Saylor played pretty well. Pete didn't fumble... Canada ran well, OL blocked pretty well I'd say. Lider was solid.

I have no clue where this team goes from here. A solid collection of talent that just can't come together and then gets hampered even more than ever by bad calls/coaching...

This sucks.

Go Griz

Tully and Hermanson aren't the defense's only problem. The defense has one stop in the redzone through 8 games. It's been humiliated by the run against NAU and now holds the conference record for worst pass defense. It's very nice of you to not even mention Ty Gregorak in your postgame wrap, Brint. But Ty Gregorak is the worst Griz DC in 27 years. 34 points should be enough to win a game. I bet Ty isn't a DC anywhere after he's fired by UM.

I happen to think the coaching was a hell of alot better than it has been...... We actually made some half-time adjustments that worked this time....
Down by 14 at the start of the second half.... and if a couple of players hold onto the ball at the end.... the Griz win this one..
We just happen to have the weakest secondary..... Specifically the safeties...... the Griz have had in many, many years....
There might have been a couple of little things the coaches could have done differently but come on. We've all complained about the vanilla/ultra conservative offense we employ with a lead.....
This time.....
We didn't go all conservative and with a little more accuracy on a couple of throws from a young QB who just had his number called in the second qtr. and we pull out a spectacular come back.....
Don't get me wrong.... I'm still totally bummed.... I hate to lose but this isn't as heavy on the coaching staff as some of you are saying....

The time has finally come! Montana needs to look outside of the "traditional pipelines" and hire a coaching staff that is prepared to return Montana to Dominance! I have been a supporter of Montana Football for many years and can not remember a coaching staff that is so ill prepared for success. Coach Delaney has done an admirable job trying to keep this team together, but has shown an inability to prepare & coach this team to victory. AD Kent Haslam must take control of the situation and hire a coaching staff that is prepared to guide this group of student-athletes back into the FCS playoffs. Let me be clear, this team IS THE MOST TALENTED team in the Big SKY!

No doubt about, you've lost your Mojo... could it be one of your coaches is.........

Good summary as always Brint... I don't even know what to say after this. I think your last sentence summed it up nicely... This sucks.

On a positive note, SSH had some nice looking passes this game. He's really not a threat in the zone reads unfortunately, but seemed accurate this game on most of his passes. Hopefully that will continue.

QBs ended up:
SSH: 26-39, 306yds, 3tds, 0ints
TM: 8-12, 79yds, 0td, 0int (Shows 6-10 in official stats, but they have Nate Harris with 2-2...we know Nate wasn't playing QB, but shares TMs number..)

One other positive note... I'm positive after this debacle of a season there needs to be mass resignations (Engstrom first) followed by a real search for a HC. Delaney (now at 8 wins, 16 losses and 1 tie as a HC), may be a great guy and all of that, but we are on pace to have the worst record the Griz have had since Larry Donovan was coach in 1985... and the first losing record for a Griz FB team since...1985.

I'm also positive that we'd still be in playoff contention if it weren't for the horrible coaching mistakes made throughout this season resulting in blown lead after blown lead.

The talent is there, the coaching isn't. Downright frustrating...

Brint, this team is playing with the cards that Engstrom dealt, long season left, and a few year to recover, is my guess.

Somehow I imagine Engstrom and Florio chuckling over this loss while sipping on herbal tea.

I was thinking the same thing :thumb:

Did anyone notice that the Griz played their hearts out today? Yes, they lost and may lose again this year, but enough negative talk.

I am totally in the minority but I don't think the defense played well enough to win. The offense needed to just line up and run between the tackles all game long and we would have won this one easy. That would have kept the ball away from them and we would have demoralized them by the second half. I think this loss is all on Rosy.
