Post Game: Special Teams and Defense lead the way

Im only seeing a handful of people here who are giving credit to the UNI defense. Phxgriz and bgbigdog said it best, this is probably going to be the best D the Griz will face. The UNI D is fast, smart, and sure tackling. They played great.

With an entirely brand new backfield. We were supposed to be able to torch that defensive backfield but had our worst passing day in 5 years.

I saw a lot of drops yesturday. One by Curran in the endzone really cost em. Nguyen dropped another one in the flats that would have been a big gainer. Calhoun also has a tough time catching the ball at times as well. I would love to see Homan more involved in the passing game. He looked really solid this Spring. When their skill guys start hauling in those passes it will lead to a lot more points on the board for sure and Gus will look a lot better on paper. The week off should help get some things sorted out on offense and give the defense an extra week to prepare for the triple option. Big time win I think the coaches made Farley look really bad.
McGee had a bad drop too.

But Spiderman himself could not have caught several of the BG throws. He seemed to be throwing to not be intercepted, rather than to be received. Like when he runs; he runs to not be hit rather than to gain yardage. Mission accomplished; no ints, no funbles, a big improvement from week 1.

Guess I missed those WR's getting any separation? Easy and lazy to pin it on the QB. Guys need to get open and catch the damn ball.

Was that his problem last year also?

Interesting stat: Despite how it felt, we actually held the ball in the fourth quarter longer than they did. 7:53 to 7:07.

The play calling was conservative as hell, and was murder to watch as a Griz fan, but it got the job done. That late first down pass to JLM won us the game (not to state the obvious  ).

On another note, was anyone else surprised by Farley's strange use of timeouts? I get the timeout after 2nd down when he figured we were gonna throw it on 3rd, but why would you call timeout after the subsequent 1st down? Genuinely curious, there.

I think his problem against NDSU was getting bull rushed on every single down.

Semenza looks like the real deal at kicker. JLM, is a flat out stud as a return man.
I don't recall two players standing out as strongly as those two this early in their careers. Really something.

It wouldn't surprise me if EWU easily hangs 40+ on the UNI defense. Through the air of course....again....and again.....and again .

How many of you have even considered, our offense played against 2 damn fine defenses? USF was very disciplined, tough, and terrific strategy, with players who executed the defense well.
While USF may have the single best defender we will see all year, calling their defense "damn fine" may be going a bit far when they're averaging 38 points allowed against two FCS opponents.

What I can't understand is why we never went back to the first touchdown play? Gus never rolled out again for the rest of the game. I can understand that UNI would be looking for it, but it would have at least pulled a defender and locked the safety when he did.

Again...its so awesome that this team can win games through defense and special teams....something only elite teams can often rely on

Delusional. This is a bad team without Brady.

It hasn't been a good offense with Brady. I am not saying this is all on BG, but he has not been very good even back to last season with a few exceptions.

Griz don't make the playoffs last year without Brady, but whatever. Keep hoping Tom Brady walks through the door.

We definitely got a little lucky on some of the deep passes that our corners didn't break up. This isn't to take away from all of the great plays that they made to break-up some of those passes. It seems like UNI had so many chances that were mere inches from completions and some drops. We'll take the W and hopefully our secondary gains a ton of confidence from this win. The front 7's pressure only works if the secondary can do their jobs.

The 4th down spot for Brady was especially frustrating because they took the line judge on the near side's spot, even though we wasn't able to see the ball. The line judge on the far side marked it further up and had a better view it appeared. Those extra possible 3 or 7 points would have been nice but thankfully we didn't need them.

And yes, the reviewed catch should have been incomplete, but the fact that it was initially called a catch was the big difference. Rule it incomplete and it stays incomplete.

So you think Gus has been a good QB? I think you are correct except for @UNI, first half SFU, @NDSU, fsecond half SDSU, Liberty prior to injury, and Cal-Poly off the top of my head.
