This is what happens when you write a summary after a case of frostbite, versus hungover. Not complaining, because, like the rest of you, I pay exactly nothing for this analysis. I blame home computers and internet access for all of this.

On all of the unsportsmanlike / taunting penalties, I liken them to adjusting to the strike zone in baseball. Every umpire has his own version of the strike zone, and even at that it's almost never entirely uniform. When a batter (or pitcher, for that matter) questions a call, or whines about it, the ump gets a little perturbed, and probably holds it against the player on future pitches. You're never going to change an umpire's call, and you know (generally) what the strike zone looks like for a particular umpire, so why whine about it? ADJUST.

The same is true of refs. If you're facing a crew that is quick to make unsportsmanlike calls (as they were last night) -- ADJUST! Stop doing the things that bring out the flags. You know they're coming (right or wrong), and there is nothing you can do about it. Don't put your team in a bad spot just to woof at an opponent, even if they've been trash-talking you all night -- it does you no damn good and hurts the team. Against a better team a penalty like this can be the difference between a win and a loss.

I personally don't think it will happen in the rest of the playoffs. The captains of the team, the seniors and the coaches will put a stop to it.
