Post Game: Putting the FCS on Notice

Nice write up :thumb: Totally agree the kick off coverage is a bit nerve racking..better get that figured out. My biggest concern this weekend is stopping the dive part of the triple option. I still think the tackles struggled with the power running game. Do you think we might see Tye run some 3-4? Brown killed us up the middle last year. We have to get that stopped.

Side note....I thought Lebsock played a very good game. He is a very sound tackler.

Go Griz!

Great point on Lebsock, he had one excellent 2nd half stop on Wentz I believe. Played s very good game for us.

I thought they might have had Lebsock spying Wentz on a few plays- looked that way to me. Either way he played a very solid game and as someone pointed out in a different thread, if he's our fourth best linebacker, we're in good shape!
GO GRIZ!

I have to admit as a Cat fan that I thoroughly enjoyed watching the game on Saturday! Great win!

I was completely surprised with how effectively the offense was able to play with the implementation of the new system. It bodes well for a better season that I predicted for the griz. Your season is made already, but you will rack up some more wins as well. Still, there will be growing pains and I felt that from the 3 phases, offense, defense, coaching... I felt like the coaching was the weakest of the 3. Now before you flame me, the coaching is also responsible for implementing the game plan, which was a great one against the NDSU defense, so they get an A for prep.

It was the in-game calls that I felt were a bit questionable. The 7 points before half I think could be laid right on Stitt's lap. It's being picky because a win is a win, and this was a great win, but I mention it because I think Stitt is going to find himself making adjustments as well. The FCS is not Mines...period.

Anyway, congrats to the griz...see you in November in our house!
Your post is right on; there is a lot to clean up. But that's good news, beating NDSU with a lot of room left for improvement. 38 and 544 against an NDSU defense makes one wonder what will happen against the generally poor defenses in the BSC. But they will have film to watch that NDSU did not.

Stitt made numerous adjustments during the game, mostly good. Once he saw #5 of NDSU was overmatched, they went after him ruthlessly. I believe mid-game adjustments will be the strength of his coaching game. However on the other side of the ball, that has been a long learning process for Gregorak. He seems to be getting there, MSU game as an example; next week will tell. He was unable to adjust to the loss of Van Ackeren last year at SLO and his defense then was taken to the woodshed without adjustment. I expect a different outcome Saturday.

Great write up. Brady made some great throws, very impressed. One adjustment I think the Griz are going to need to make on the offense is to stop sending the shorter guys (Naccarto, Nguyen and Counts) across the middle. In order to hit those guys in the chest the ball has to drop about 2 feet in 15 yards while passing over 6 feet tall d-linemen, and the result is overthrows. Eventually those will turn into interceptions.

Most surprising win since beating Idaho in 2003 with the option game?

It looked to me, gauged on the amount of mistakes, that the ceiling for improvement for the Griz is higher than NDSU. That's good news.

I'm very impressed with the Griz. Very impressed with how well your offense learned the new scheme in that short amount of time. They looked pretty sharp aside from a few miscommunications. Still room for improvement though, which is scary for the rest of the teams on your schedule. Your WRs picked on our DBs a lot. Definitely outplayed there, and NDSU was outcoached. Great game. Couldn't ask for a more exciting game to start the college football season.

Agreed completely, beating defending NC with room for improvement is actually a good sign. Plus, I also find the willingness to make adjustments very encouraging

Credit Jamal Wilson and Caleb Kidder for some great blocks on that play, but also big ups to our Oline for making it happen as well.

2nd video has a great view from the endzone. Great initial kick-out block on #5 by Kidder but Kose had the block of the game sealing down on #41 and also managed to trip up #1.

I love the "out of the box" thinking. Putting Kose in on offense was a stroke of genius

I believe they used Kose, Kidder, Wilson and Ralston in that package - NDSU didn't know what hit them!

That or the 2008 road win at CPSLO after we replaced damn near the whole team due to graduation from the 2007 team.

NDSU had plenty of film from Stitt's days at Mines to watch. The difference was the level of talent he now has at his disposal, which is what many of us have been saying all along. :coffee:

Not only using those guys in the power formation, but on 2nd and goal sending Kose out into the flat on a passing route. NDSU read it and Gus wisely just threw it away, but that passing attempt out of the power formation might've given the Bison D second thoughts about what exactly the Griz were gonna run on that last play.

It's plays/formations like that why practices were closed.

Great analysis BW. I to, feel the special teams on kickoff returns has to improve. The good news from special teams was made field goals and extra points. But, turn those field goals into TDs and NDSU is playing catchup the whole game. Red zone offense will be a priority this week I believe.

Great improvement with OL, quick adjustment to new offense and a very gutsy guy calling the plays. It is going to be a ride. I need to up my dosage of blood pressure drugs though.

Just watched these videos. Kose absolutely destroyed the linebacker he blocked (#41) and opened up that hole. LB on LB. Guess whose is better?

Having Gamboa in the lineup again will be a great boost. He would have held Wentz to a few less yards and maybe one less touchdown run. He could be our best defender. With his sideline to sideline speed at lineback he is a huge asset against running qbs and side to side running offenses/screens. Jamaal Wilsons quickness at the DT position was evident. He had some big tackles coming down the line and hitting RBs for 1-2 yard gains that shoulda been 7-8 yarders. I like the peices this team has early!

While I generally agree that we're a better team with Gamboa on the field, Lebsock did a phenomenal job filling in for him. That kid flat out knows how to tackle and has a tremendous nose for the football. Too bad we can't find a place for him on the field more. Dude is a baller.
