Post game: Overcoming errors and earning a huge road win

davis rallied late, but the rally fell short when a critical late-game fumble ended a potential game-tying drive in a heartbreaking 31-23 loss to the Montana Grizzlies before a crowd of 9,576 Saturday night at UC Davis Health Stadium.

The Big Sky Conference loss drops the Aggies to 3-3 overall and 1-2 in league play. Montana is now 5-1 and 2-1.

"It's a single elimination tournament now," said Aggie head coach Dan Hawkins about UCD's quest for a Big Sky title. "It was a tough one for us. It's a close league, but it's not one play or one guy or one unit. It's on us to get better and I know we will. I know the character of this team." The Grizzlies, 9-1 lifetime against UCD, dominated the early part of the second half, turning a 21-20 lead at intermission into a 31-20 lead with 7:03 remaining in the game. The Aggies had 264 yards in the first half as Miles Hastings was on target, hitting 15 of 19 tosses for 204 yards and two scores. Montana's defense stiffened in the third quarter, however, holding the Aggies to just 72 yards as the Griz held the Aggies scoreless for nearly 29 minutes. UCD had taken a 20-14 lead on a 14-yard TD pass from Hastings to Samuel Gbatu with 3:06 remaining in the first half, but didn't score again until Hunter Ridley converted a 42-yard field goal to cut the deficit to 31-23 with just 3:58 remaining in the game.

After forcing a three-and-out on the Montana offense, UCD started its final drive at its own 35-yard-line with 3:01 on the clock and one timeout remaining. UCD wasted little time moving into scoring position as coaches drew up a potential game-tying 2-point conversion should the Aggies hit paydirt. Hastings, who was on target all night against a talented Montana defense, completed passes to Gbatu and Chaz Davis as the Aggies moved quickly to the Griz 33. A 16-yard strike to Andre Crump brought the ball to the Montana 12. On the next play, Hastings again found Crump with a short pass in the left flat. Crump gathered the ball in and headed for the goal line, but was tripped up at the Griz 7 and fumbled the ball as he was going down. Montana safety Ryder Meyer jumped on the loose ball with 1:18 left and Montana ran out the clock to claim the tense win.

"It's not fun," said Hastings at the post-game press conference. "I hate losing. You put yourself out there and take a shot, but it just wasn't our day. We'll be back." Despite the loss, Hastings enjoyed a stellar night, never getting sacked as he hit 31 of 46 for 359 yards with no interceptions. In the absence of starting running back Lan Larison, freshman Jordan Fisher had a standout night with 57 yards on the ground. "He's a very special kid," said Hawkins of Fisher. "His number was called and he responded."

The Aggies return to Big Sky play at Weber State on Saturday Oct. 14, and don't return home until a Saturday, Nov. 4 date with Portland State.

- In 3 conference games Montana has 0 QB sacks.

I have been fortunate enough to have a personal relationship with Skip Holtz. Had the chance to talk defensive philosophy with him. Regarding sacks, or lack thereof, he told me, “When I couldn’t get pressure with 4, I wanted to send 5. When I couldn’t get pressure with 5, I would send 6. When I couldn’t get pressure with 7, I would send 7. If I couldn’t get pressure with 7, I said f**k it, lets drop ‘em all and try to cover everyone.”

1. Herder: "I didn’t think Montana was playing like a Top 25 team in September despite being 4-1. But after winning at media poll No. 20 UC Davis, the Grizzlies looked to have found their stride. The o-line looked much better, and QB Clifton McDowell came into his own with a strong performance. Montana solidifies its place in the Top 25 at this point in the season after much online argument. I kept UC Davis on my ballot at 3-3 overall and 3-2 vs. the FCS. I was high on the Aggies this offseason and throughout September, and I still believe them to be one of the 25 best teams in the FCS. Their two losses were close games to ranked teams (EWU, Montana)."

2. Hill's unsportsmanlike penalty was way away from the play when he was covering a swing back. He apparently pushed the guy late not knowing the play was over. Wasn't a big deal. Dumb call by ref.

So, how do explain Bobby’s unsportsmanlike penalty?

UC Davis converted a 3rd and short and the officials missed a real obvious hold on Gubner. He must have said a "magic" word.

Hill taunted the ucd bench. Uber dumb play.

BH earned his after a blatant hold was missed. Frankly with bsc officiating, I honestly don't know how any coach in this league stays in a game. I'd be run before the opening KO landed with the shitty officiating we face.

I may be FOS, but BH seems to be hell bent on his view being right, and to hell with everybody else. All or nothin'. :twocents: But then, I ain't paid to be right. He is.

I think it was his first one ever.

It doesn't matter that it might have been his first one. How can he demand focus and discipline from his players and then act like that? He significantly undermined his ability to lead and hold players accountable for their actions without being a hypocrite.

Do you know what he did or said to the ref? How do you know it wasn't something that every coach says or does during a game but the ref was just over sensitive that day? I would bet you have no idea what happened...just on here trying to stir up a hornet's nest. (Pun intended)

First, it's the job of coaches to communicate with refs. Second, what you said may be true. Third, the standards for talking to refs is completely different for coaches and players. Fourth, sometimes coaches try to express big irritation with calls and refs, in order to influence them for the rest of the game. Fifth, sometimes coaches are willing to take a penalty to fire up the team. Sixth, what Hornet said is wrong and pretty much stupid.

You are vastly misunderstanding how Griz fans feel about Bobby getting that unsportsmanlike call. I jumped out of my seat and cheered for him getting it.

The VAST majority of head coaches go their entire career without getting an unsportsmanlike penalty for a reason...actually many reasons. The main one is because it's inexcusable. You guys can rationalize his actions all you want but I'll stand by what I said...REALLY bad optics for a guy who is demanding discipline from his players and assistant coaches. Can you imagine what he would have said/done if one of his assistants got flagged?

And the players, particularly Gubner, view it as a player's coach supporting them. A rare but justified statement.

Careful, you're gonna pull a muscle reaching that hard.

What's your backup for that statement? I can't imagine that's true.

The team liked the penalty. I talked some guys this week about it.

I get that hating Bobby Hauck and Hoops is an important part of your life, but if you are trying to come here and convince people that it was a problem that he got the unsportsmanlike penalty, you are barking up the wrong tree. I will be the third poster to confirm that I have heard from a player that they loved it and felt supported, like Bobby had their back. And we all care about what the team thinks and does a lot more than we care about what some random Sac State troll comes here to post about their creepy obsession with Bobby.

He has no backup, PR. He’s stirring the pot.
