BW- good write up...
The Starting Front Defensive 7 yesterday is very good and the best thing is we will have them all next year. Good to see the starting linebackers JP, Coyle, and Tripp all led the team in tackles with 10-JP, 9-Tripp, 8-Coyle....This shows that not many plays make it past them!!!
The D-Line had great game and this must continue! Props to #58 Wags on a hell of a game.. We need all them to keep stepping up
The back end is a bit nerve racking but i believe as the season continues the CB's will start making plays and the Safteys will get better as well...
I also might add that we have not played a conference game yet... i believe the offense and defense has been called relatively "vanilla" in the sense they have not opened up playbook yet... EXPECT this to change and the griz come out firing on both sides of ball next week! :thumb:
GO GRIZ!
I don't want to sound like "Chicken Little" here so hang with me. I think that this Griz team is potentially a 8 or 9 win team this year because of their O-Line, Running Backs and their Defensive Front Seven. But to you fans that are in the "this secondary will significantly improve over the course of the season" crowd, here are a few points to ponder-
1. The quarterback from Liberty that just threw for 300+ yards against us was a freshman. He was inserted into the lineup because the starter was hurt late in last week's game.
2. For the third week in a row, we got beat on a "skinny post" for big yardage. I know it wasn't a TD but it should have been. The Liberty QB put to much air under the ball and our DBs were able to recover. That was the play where Tully, who was completely out of position on the play, came in late and hit the receiver and got flagged for PI. This type of "breakdown" has cost the Griz two TDs so far this season and that play should have the third time. It is the third game of the year and we still have not made an adjustment to stop that "play". The opposing offensive coordinators now have three game tapes on our secondary's "breakdowns".
3. After the "beat down" at the hands of The Citadel, how good is the passing game of ASU? Their quarterback threw for 260 yards and had two TDs against the Griz. He had passer rating of 154.2 against us when it was all said and done. We were touting that game as a great "moral victory" because the Griz "hung" with ASU on their home turf. Does anyone view that Griz loss to ASU differently now after ASU's loss the The Citadel?
4. The Griz have a totally new and inexperienced Defensive Coordinator in Coach Ty. We have other new defensive coaches as well, including a new safeties coach. Are they all on the same page? Where are the adjustments? I am hearing through the "grapevine" that Coach Ty's new defensive scheme is very complex with a lot of pre-snap "checks" and "audibles". Are our secondary players confused? Is that why they seem to be out of position a lot? Nobody brings this point up.
5. In terms of passing teams, how much better is the competition going to be in the Big Sky Conference this year? I don't know a lot about Eastern Washington but I have heard that they are good. North Dakota just put up 430 yards passing against San Diego State this last Saturday. North Dakota almost won the game but they stalled in San Diego State's territory on forth down play with a few seconds remaining. I am sure San Diego State's secondary is better than ours. The North Dakota game, by the way, is on the road this year. Then there is SUU which has a NFL "prospect" directing their offence this year. You gotta believe he will throw for some yards against the Griz. I really don't know how vulnerable the Griz are against MSU so I won't even mention that game. The Griz seemed to "own" them year in and year out so is a loss really that probable?
If you have any other thoughts, please "chime" in.
