Post Game: Humbling loss

The Griz got punched in the mouth from the start and were backpedaling from the get-go.

The D needs to quit the early scores by the opponent. Although they only allowed 3 points after the 10-minute mark of the 1st quarter, they failed to get off the field on key third, and fourth, downs. They couldn't get pressure on NAU's QB and the tackling on Bauman was atrocious.

On offense, NAU rushed and blitzed hard. We failed to ever run some screens (besides Saylor's TD wouldn't ya know) or quick outs to get pressure off of JJ. Because we were behind we never were able to establish the run game and/or our balanced attack. When we started to get things rolling we were hit with three crucial back-breaking fumbles. One was a 14 point swing. The OL was the worst part of the night. Looked like Dickenson against Marshall scrambling for his life again.

All in all, NAU started hot and never took their foot off the gas. Kudos to them, they played their best game of the year bar-none. For a QB that came in with 2 TDs and 4 INTs we made him look great.

There are fewer gimmies in the Big Sky Conference and you can't find ways to hurt yourself like UM did last Saturday. Are we a bad team? I don't believe so. Are we a great team? Far from it. I believe we are a good team that played about as poorly as it can. The potential is there, I'm excited to see the response in 5 days.

Many people have been commenting on what the Griz did or didn't do, but what happened was this: NAU beat our asses. We didn't fumble the ball - they knocked it away from us like schoolyard bullies. Hats off to NAU. They looked like contenders and we looked like pretenders.

Still, I think we'll be fine.

And AWF - I agree, 3-1 is not the end of the world, I think the team learns from this and will move forward just fine. Learning from losses and adjusting can sometimes be the best thing for a team.
