Post Game: Humbling loss

I am not sure, but i don't think this loss would drop us more than two spots would it? being that most top five lost themselves?

The 4th and goal was a bad call because the Jacks were pushing the defense around earlier. Take the 3 point and live to play another day.
Catsrback...great post.

UM had just driven 86 yards in just over 5 minutes. UM had the momentum. NAU's defense was not pushing UM around on that drive. Again, I'm fine with call. Kicking a FG from the 2 at that point in the game would have been a very conservative, and wimpy, call.

YOu had a first and goal from the 5, with "the best OL in the FCS" and couldn't punch it in on the first 3 tries.

Yeah, giving it one more try was not a sound decision

Other than the horrific o-line play, the next thing that stood out the most to me was how wide open nau's receivers were on the short out routes and over the middle. Most of the time there was no defender within 2-3 yards of the receiver. That hurts.

Man I fu*king hate agreeing with you and its kinda sick that you of all people are the only one that gets it.............but you are 100% correct.

Its very telling that we lost by 18 points and these guys are complaining about one FG. NAU missed a FG so it evened out. Hell looking back at the game even if we score a TD on that play we still lose because they physically kicked our asses.

It was a great call and still is.
you and PR are dead wrong on the call. You take the points, its a no brainer. going for it was an act of desparation showing the coaching staff had panicked at NAU's quick start. I'm not sure if it would have any difference in the outcome though, because they in fact kicked our butts all over the field, especially in the 4th quarter.

You are wrong but I will give you 6 points even though we probably would have missed that FG anyway.

We still lost by "12"

A FG doesnt matter when 4 DL men take apart the strength of your team play after play after play. NAU hit us in the mouth and we laid down and took it like NAUchick last night.

Deal with it.

I think the result of going for it on 4th down showed the absolute worst outcome. Although it was incredibly rare that not only would we fail the attempt but fumble the ball and have it returned for a TD. The safe bet was get the points. Yes it was conservative but the game that far needed small victories, even if it was just 3 points.

Instead, the team shows "guts" which winds up sealing the deal for NAU. Not a very good calculated risk, IMO.

It was an awful call.. Rolling out on the week side of the field only having 2 guys to throw it to and they were covered so JJ decided to make a play and coughs up the fooball for 7 points?

You gotta have some sort of trickery on 4th down and ur in that situation. I know that the game didn't fall on that play cuz we were getting rolled all game but it took the sails right out of our boat..

It was a great call to go for the TD.

TDs win games

I will give you the rolling to the short side of the field that was stupid but kind of expected, we do that a lot the last couple years.

for years I have watched as Jerome has pissed down his leg against the Griz, and he tried a few times yesterday, but Delany did piss down his leg on the 4th down call. He was getting his ass kicked and knew it and went for it hoping that trying the same thing over and over would have a different result.

One more criticism to pile on the coaching staff: JJ should have been taken out of the game in the last few minutes, especially after he was shaken up enough to come out for that one down. The game was lost. It was obvious. NAU was continuing to pour through our non-existent pass protection. Yet JJ was in there like a sacrificial lamb to take a pounding to the last. 5 sacks. Who knows how many time he was knocked on this ass?

Delaney has said over and over he likes to line up and run the ball. Hat on hat. You have to be able to run the ball and stop the run if you want to win in this league. Well Mick now you have it. Live by the sword, and in our case, die by the sword. Last night was a poorly executed lack luster game plan. The 4th down call was STUPID.

Going for it on 4th there is a no brainer to me. We needed a TD there to have a chance.

I thought the offensive play calling was bad, but the execution was worse, especially on the OL. D needs to re-learn how to wrap up.

The season isn't over. They played much harder than us. This might be one of those losses that we look back at as something that was good for us in the long run. Lot's to learn from on this loss and gives the team to work on their exposed weaknesses. I think we still have a very good team.

I'm wondering what happened to Van? Man, the way that guy started the season
I thought he was really gonna light it up for the Griz this season. Is it an injury or have DC's
figured him out?

I've wondered that as well. Dude should be getting so many more carries. Someone mentioned something about being wary of his past injury, but I haven't seen any sign of residual from that - he is explosive. Give him the rock!

First and goal from the five was the bad call. Followed by the second and third bad calls. Same as last year. Earlier this year we went heavy set with guards inserted to go in motion, double tight ends, a lead fullback and pushed the defense into the first row. Pound for three plays and you don't need a fourth down.

Clearly this was a humbling loss for the griz, but as wise posters have shared, one game does not a season make. Suffice it to say that the griz are not as bad as this loss nor the Cats as good as their win. Still more to be seen, but the field is indeed leveling out and we are seeing more and able to really get a read on the conference. It's a good season that is shaping up before us!

Wise perspective 76!

They are in trouble because of the coaching staff. I have NEVER seen such piss poor scheming and play calling in my time of watching Griz football. Never. This staff looks lost and I mean lost. The first real test of the season and they got housed. Turnovers kill you, but their was no air in the tires folks. The staff did nothing to instill confidence in the kids and it was clear this game was over with 14 minutes to go in the third. I had zero faith in a comeback based purely off body language. You could see the kids were lost and had not one idea of how they were going to gain some momentum and mount a comeback.
I'm not a football strategy guru, but I had a very difficult time trying to figure out what the strategy was of anything the Griz were attempting to do last night.

accurate summation. we do have one thing going for us and that is JJ. He was tough. pressured all night but showed more determination than any other player on the field. threw some long balls that should have been caught. Hopefully the others will rally behind him.

actually two.....we have our most intense opponents at home (3).....we always play better at home....hopefully it will be not only better but enough to win these games.

We should have kicked the FG instead of going for it. At that point we had some momentum, and 3 points would've been better than nothing had NAU stopped us. I remember '08 scat/Griz when we stuffed them at the goal line, probably top 3 loudest times I ever remember at Wa/Griz. That to me set the entire tone for the rest of the game on both sides of the ball. We get stopped by NAU, and I think that gives them that much more momentum going into the half. We needed that small victory, a little boost of confidence.
