Post Game: Good teams don't leave points off the board

The play calling made plain vanilla look exciting.

This is the first year in a long time where I think I can count the number of trick plays on one hand. I count two Greg Hardy passes... one for a TD early in the season and a throw-away yesterday. Not a lot of reverse field stuff, no flea-flickers, no WR passes, no wildcat... nothing.

We sure as hell had the 5 yard slant mastered yesterday.. don't think we completed too many of them, but we got really good at calling that play. Not sure why we didn't see more Joey Counts yesterday.. plowing Peter Nguyen up the middle went for a loss more often than not and it seems like we should have had some variety with a bruising back taking some of the carries. Trent McKinney absolutely should have been given a shot to kick-start the offense yesterday, SSH wasn't getting it done throwing and definitely not running. We can't run this offense with SSH because he's simply too slow and not a threat to run.. so why the hell when the offense sputtered on 12 straight possessions did McKinney not get a chance to run? So much wrong with yesterday.. only bright spot was the defense, which mostly held the Cats to not much except the TD where Bo Tully got lost in the secondary again. We did a fine job in the field position battle.. except when Henderson let that ball roll right past him.. that's when the field position battle turned against us.

Just watch the DVR of the game. I wanted to check out 5 calls/no calls i thought that we didn't get. The two safety possibilities were called correctly. When I saw the kickoff live I thought he had possession, but he muffed it and it rolled into the end zone. The sack in the end zone wasn't because Tray Robinson was in the area. The no-call on holding on Kemp by Darius Jones was a bad call. The big one though was a fumble when Maghee's arm was hit. He had it cocked but the ball never went forward with his arm. It was a fumble.

This game was sorta like the season. Lots of good play (by offense early in game, and defense most of the game), but too many missed opportunities, inconsistency (on offense this time), missed short FG's, a fumble, letting the Cats out of 3rd holes too often, and bad bounces. The title of the thread says alot. I would have inserted McKinney for a series or two, starting in the 2d quarter and certainly in the second half.

While not an excuse, the refs made or missed critical calls, as others have pointed out. Not calling blatant pass interference by the Cats, at least on several times, especially the grabbing of Kemp's jersey as he tried to break free right in front a ref and UM bench. Just terrible to miss such a blatant and easy call. Not calling a fumble by the Irish lad. Great play by UM, UM gets the ball at critical time in good field possession, and a pathetic out of position ref comes in to the make the call. Missed motion penalties by MSU. The early unsportsmanlike call after a great hit and I believe 3rd done play. Jezz, it was a great and important play in a huge rivalry, and some dumbass ref calls that. I still think the throw into the ground by the Irish lad while being tackled in the endzone should have been a safety.

Too bad Nguyen dislocated his thumb in the 2d quarter, which limited his play the rest of the game. He was on his way to a huge game, and would have had a few more returns and fielded that one punt later in the game. Nguyen was the offensive player of the year, in my view. Great player. Very tough. Huge heart. Great kid. Hope his younger brother comes here. He's a bit heavier than Peter, and more of a power runner but has some moves.

Congrats to the Cats on a nice win and nice season, but they'd better step it up or they won't last long in the playoffs. I could see Villanova knocking them off in the first round.

Tough season, but I'm proud of the team and the seniors. They accomplished alot and experienced nice success in their 4/5 years. I hope the fans remember their determination, drive, focus and courage in view of what faced and largely overcame in the past 11 months. While McKinney and S-H performed admirably, this team is a top 5 seed with Jordan Johnson at the helm. They should hold their heads high. I think Griz Nation is very proud of them.

Just watched the replay of the McGhee pass/fumble play. Originally I thought we got away with it. it is very close but watching the final replay of it at 1/15 speed the hand and ball moves forward slightly before the ball comes loose. So it was the right call.

Excellent points!

This coaching staff has left me shaking my head. Running 4 vertical routes on 3rd and 9 WTH??? Going to the same 3-5 plays over and over again. Inability to make any kind of adjustments whatsoever. Probably one of the most inept coaching staffs I can remember.

Agreed. How many times did SSH throw a 4-5 yard pass on third-and-9? WTF! If he is not capable of accurately throwing a 10 yard pass, get someone in there who can do so. I know that Brezcnek can do it.

You do? How? He just might be the guy, but I never saw him practice nor throw a pass in a game.

I haven't heard one person that saw him in practice say that he shouldn't have received a chance....

I saw him in practice, some good and some bad. No way I could say he was the answer to our QB dilemma. Unlike Alpha, I think the QB is a running back in this offense. Therefore I think McKinney shouldn't have been given up on. His short to mid range passing was ever bit as good or better than S-H. Neither could throw deep. With S-H we were running a no-option no-read offense.

Watch the replay and slow it down, both the original view and the last replay show forward movement of the ball before it was loose.

I am sure that you want to blame the refs but it just isn't the case.

BW you have a great way of putting things into perspective for us. It's important to us all but in the end it's just a game. Thanks for keepin' it real, you may be the classiest fan on either side of the divide. Glad you're a griz fan for sure.

+1

Offensively our play calling is horrible. I have seen Rosey in action during practice he's a great position coach for the QBs but his play calling is predictable and seems to lack creativity & the ability to adapt. Plus, special teams is a huge issue too. I was sitting directly behind the Griz bench and overheard them tell Henderson to fair catch punts "that you can get too..." Our FG & KO kicking game is totally suspect. We lack aggression in our offensive scheme.

Ty has done a great job of adjusting to his talent and it showed the last half of the season. One third of our game day execution and management is way below par. Defer Micks payment for 2013 and spread it out over the next 5-7 years and bring in someone ASAP!

had a great time yesterdayb but reall paying for it today. holy. gonna hold off on beers until our next home game.

i'm not one to talk trash but i will say that i'll laugh my ass off if any griz fan makes fun of cat fans for leaving the game early. i thought it was bad in the 3rd quarter but i was blown away in the 4th quarter seeing empty seats everywhere. guess it's not just msu where disappointed fans leave early.....

Good call Brint
What we need I don't see happening for next year is a new HC. Mick may be a great person and know tons of football but he is simply is not the leader this team needs. After the first series in the 4th if not sooner Trent should have been given a shot to redeem himself, after all he was the original signal caller. Not to mention he did not perform any worse then Shay did yesterday when he got pulled in that Dakota game. Shame on the coaches for not at least trying to get a spark going with another QB.
The quote in the Missoulian kind of summed it up for me with Mick. " We knew we would have to play our best game today knowing how good the cats had been, We just played the best we could. (summed up)
NO, we were once again out coached. There was and still is to much talent on this team to end the season the way we did, I hope we aren't talking this way again this time next season.

I didn't really see any empty seats.. the game wasn't over until mid-late 4th quarter.
