Post Game: Good teams don't leave points off the board

Cats played better when it counted. Good luck to them in the playoffs, but I'll be pulling for ASU and NAU. It wouldn't hurt my feelings if the Cats knock off a CAA team or two though. 4 cat fans to the right of us today were pretty good people..they cheered but did no gloating. I know Lider probably wants those two back and he will be kicking his tail off all offseason to get better. Surprised didn't see TM at all at QB. Would've liked to see AB in there as well but will have to wait till spring ball and next fall for all that to sort itselft out I guess. Will be interesting to see how Brady G. competes with those other guys..and at this point have no idea what offense the Griz will be going with. Felt bad for Dan Moore, but I think he still has some football ahead of him if he can get his body to cooperate and stay out of the training room. Good luck on Pro Day Dan!

Other than that not much I wish I could have done different today except maybe drink more to ease the pain. Well now that the Grizzly football season has come to a close back to preparing for the Zombie Apocalypse.

*keep quiet tonight spelling and grammar police..I'm buzzed, disappointed and just don't care enough to proofread before I post.*

yup, that's why EWU gets the auto, if NAU had won MSU would have had it.

Yea, gave EWU the autobid over the cats.

The title just about sums it all up. Good teams find ways to execute in tough situations and when they have the chance to put points on the board - the capitalize on it. Today, the Cats did that and the Griz did not.

Congrats to the cats on a very hard fought win. They're positioned well to get into the playoffs with home field throughout now and they'll have a week off to rest up from a very hard-hitting game where it looked like they had a lineman get hurt and Kirk have some sort of shoulder injury. MSU's adjustments to our offense were excellent. The Grizzly offense early had it going, 6 for 7 at one point on 3rd down - but the cats adjusted and totally shut the offense out. At that point, with a stone cold offense, the cats didn't need to do much to get the win - and they really didn't, on offense. Defensively though they were excellent, I was very impressed with the way their corners play. I expected a tough game from their front 7, but their corners were great in coverage as well.

Some observations:

- Probably the best game I've seen all season out of the defense. Just one noticeable error on the MSU touchdown where Dennard and Bo Tully both followed the split-out WR and left the slot WR wide open in the corner. There were other break-downs but none as costly as that.

- 3 big ST errors, two missed kicks and Henderson not fair catching that punt which rolled for another 22 yards and eventually set up a short punt to give MSU the ball back in our territory, allowing them to kick a fieldgoal that made it a 2 score game.

- 19 tackles for Brock Coyle, 13 for Jordan Tripp. Our LBs played very well today. I'm glad all of the starters will be back. Coyle really came into his own this year and I believe ends the season as the #1 tackler on the team.

- UM was 6/7 on 3rd down after Nguyen's TD. After that? 3 for 14. It got REAL tough to get a first down when they never went down the field and the cats adjusted to jam up the running game.

- Speaking of jamming up the running game, it looked like Oiland got a concussion or something. I can't help but notice that was on the series right after the Nguyen TD. Hines isn't the powerful center that Oiland is, we lost some skillful interior work when Kjelby went out.

- Griz missed fieldgoals, 23 and 37 yards... inexcusable.

- I'm glad Pete got a final TD against the cats, that was a great run and excellent blocking for him.

- Of the two possible safeties I got clarification at halftime from someone more knowledgeable than me about the rules and that first one was clearly not a safety based on his understanding. Gotta have possession for that to be a safety, the MSU player never had possession. The 2nd one was borderline, #7 was about 12 yards away, not sure if that's really "in the area". However in the end it wouldn't have mattered.

- I didn't see how close the McGhee "incompletion" came to a fumble, those that saw it on TV, how close was it?

- I was pretty impressed with that Floekotter WR for MSU, good awareness on the field.

- I liked the power running from Canada, ran through a few guys today.

- It sucks Dan Moore had to lose a fumble like that on his last career Griz game. You could tell he was just a shell of himself. I hope he can heal up not and get ready for Pro Day.

- Considering the cats tried to attack Schmaing with Schreibeis most of the day I have to say John did pretty darn well for the most part.

- Another game just like the other losses, the offense starts good but then doesn't adjust and gets shut down. This year there's been just an overall issue with making adjustments at all. The cats did it, many other teams that beat the Griz did it this year as well. I just don't get it - the other coaching staffs we've seen here were all very good at making adjustments, this one seems to either make ineffective ones or none at all.

---------------------------

Well this season has mercifully come to an end and just like two years ago another record falls at the hands of the cats, a playoff streak in 2010 and a winning record streak in 2012. Cat fans today were mostly pretty good peeps. I was expecting a ton of jerks but most were good to drink with before kickoff and were gracious winners after the game. Outside of the few jerk screaming at the footbridge for about 10 minutes at Griz fans to "eat sh*t" it really seemed to me that most cat fans showed good class in the win. Also props to all who donated cans and goods for the food drive, MSU raised something like 85,000 pounds to UM's 54,000, those that are without food these holidays were the real winners from that competition.

Thanks Grizzly seniors for the memories. I know this season didn't turn out at all like you expected and has finished with a resounding thud. As the pain and frustration from this season fades our outgoing seniors will be able to look back further than just this year and have a lot of great memories of their time as Grizzlies.

On to recruiting and then spring camp - which can't get here soon enough.

Proud to be a Griz
Nice post. Very hard fought game as I expected. Both front seven's played exceptional today! The difference in mind was DeNarius. We struggled all day due to the Griz front, but DM was not going to be denied.

Great effort, and good luck to the Griz seniors in the future.

Special shout out to Greg Hardy! You were a stud today!

NAU goes 6-0, then 0-2. Groundhog Day.

Just talking down at the tailgate today before the game how Jerome was having a pretty good year.

Beat Bobby Hauck...Check
Beat Montana....Check
Win the Big Sky...in progress
Make the playoffs...in progress

I guess two of four isn't bad.

I swear if FCS had a 6 game season NAU would be champions every year.

BW: Great analysis! Though watch that Gilbert play again. He dropped it, picked the ball up and intentionally backed into the endzone and then kneeled it. He did gain possession. This play was right in front of me as my seats are on the goal line right. Though I need to watch again as well.
Did you watch the replay? Look again.

RobGriz--I will have to watch it again. The play went fast. They never replay those questionable calls on the jumbotron either.

As I understand it, the people running Griz Vision are instructed not to replay questionable plays on the video board. It gets fans too riled up if they feel the call was in error. I don't know if it is an NCAA guideline, Big Sky rule or just a procedure in our stadium.

Excellent points!

This coaching staff has left me shaking my head. Running 4 vertical routes on 3rd and 9 WTH??? Going to the same 3-5 plays over and over again. Inability to make any kind of adjustments whatsoever. Probably one of the most inept coaching staffs I can remember.

Agreed. How many times did SSH throw a 4-5 yard pass on third-and-9? WTF! If he is not capable of accurately throwing a 10 yard pass, get someone in there who can do so. I know that Brezcnek can do it.

+1 Why even run a route that is 5 yards deep when you need 9+ yards for a first down? Get all the WRs running vertical routes.

Same thing in Bozeman, they never show a close call

While the outcome wasn't what I wanted, that absolutely was one hell of a game. Tough defensive game for both teams...I enjoyed myself for the most part. A job well done to both teams, hope the Bobcats show some Montana pride in the playoffs and go far.

thank you Brint.........seniors like gratton, harris, moore, peter, waldon, kemp and hardy will be missed and like you said will be great memories.
i would give the season game ball to wags, he has been the most consistent player on the team this year.
as far as spring camp.......i look forward to it to seeing the new recruits and how the vets have progressed, however, besides the defensive and offensive line coaches, the rest will not be as exciting

What are the chances Delaney will announce his retirement (again)? It would be an excellent time to begin the search for a coach who would plan for long term excellence.

Thanks for a good post/report Brint. Concerning Lider ............and our coaching.

The two field goals were missed. The first one just right by a few/inches. Important to note was the extra point kick hit the right post but managed to get in. Lider was off today for some reason.

A coach needs to note what the hell is going on. This was a perfect game for a fake field goal or two. Get one fake, it could lead to 7 points. All season long (way to long) we have mis-managed games via our head coach etc. We had nothing new to show the cats. When Delaney was asked about the plays after the game he mentioned the cats defense adjusted and we could not execute our offense. When asked just what the cats did Delaney could not answer.

I like Mick Delaney. I feel sorry for him and the Griz program because he stepped up and took over and these results are what we get. We could not expect the fifth ranked assistant coach to take over and perform magic.

One must put all the blame on the quick to judgement Engstrom. Fire the AD and head coach and on his own hires Mick. That guy (Engstrom) caused our coaching problems. Many, many more qualified coaches would have stepped in and taken over our program.

Yes we will work our way out of this and I along with all Griz fans can't wait for spring ball. Recruits are still interested.......Go Griz!
