Post Game: A team on the rise

Biggest issue in this game was on defense and not tackling the ball carrier.
Instead there would be three or four guys trying to strip the ball.
We need some heavy, old-fashioned, tackling that will rattle the ball players ancestors!

:thumb:

what instead of trying to strip the ball and the RB gaining another 5-6 yards?

Great post Brint. We were at the game and I have learned to re-watch the game on TV before posting. You miss a lot watching the game live and you are really caught up in the emotion of it. I can lean negative sometimes and your positive comments added to others that post point out aspects of the game I did not notice while yelling and screaming.

On a side note, I saw some tweets you made. Are you sure you really saw the second half? LOL

This game felt a lot like one from the Hauck days.

Good teams find ways to win and they won. About all that needs to be said.

The Defense finally played decent/fair in the 4th Qtr. I mean they played aggressive. They actually hit someone with force. Well ok, a little bit more physical. But hey, it is a start. Our defense needs to be more aggressive with their hits. Something like, maybe a Strahm personal foul for unnecessary roughness. Haucks defensive teams let the opposing offenses know they had been in a football game. NDSU plays very physical, that is why they are successful. The Griz D is very soft. In the 1st half if it were me, the opposing receivers wouldn't get off the line without being knocked on their ass a few times. I may get burn't one or twice, but in the 2nd half, those receivers wouldn't be so much faster then us anymore.

Question:
are the pokeys that good now or are we just to the level of them ?

Idaho State had a lot of statistics leaders against a pretty decent schedule.

They are (and demonstrated very clearly) one of the most explosive offenses in the nation.

Most seasons, we should manhandle them. But they have a lot senior leadership on that squad, and when that matches up against our lack of experience but better talent, it leads to crazy games. Also, Pocatello is a weird place to play.

I still think we may be jumping the gun here, i'd like to see us win the Big Sky and/or make a deep playoff run before i'll get to excited.

The defense doesn't need to be more aggressive with hits. They have to learn some fundamentals first. They literally don't know how to tackle on their own. It was very hard to watch piles of guys try to take ball carriers down. So many attempted arm tackles. And the D-line did a fantastic job of collapsing the pocket, but they would inevitably let the QB slip through some giant hole for the first down. The defense has a lot of work to do. And it isn't about being more aggressive.

One other thing:

NDSU plays very physical, that is why they are successful.

Are we North Dakota State? Are we?

No. We are Mon-fucking-tana. We are our own school and our own brand. We better act like it. Copying a former D2 school nearly a thousand miles away who had a wildly successful coach is not what we do.

 Good Lord. Please stop.

No comments on the new power formations.
Horner and Bingham look more like TEs lined up next to tackle in the red zone.
Second wrinkle is guard pulling on power run plays.
Nice to see coaching staff make these type of changes, making good use of the players and giving advantage in run game and extra protection and beef in short yardage.
Kudos to coaches and their game planning.
Keenan is becoming a great leader like his emotion and his play is getting very consistent.
Was nice to see Bingham playing, no catches but good blocking. Combo of him and Horner lining up together looks like the Griz can bring the beef when needed and both players are solid blockers and receivers.
Last Strong is still enforcing on the defensive side, didn't have as many big plays, but I remember one and it set the tone in the second half.

Good assessment Brint.

One point is the 4th down attempt that worked out. What the hell are we doing. There is 10 minutes left in the game. We're holding a 4 pt lead and we risk handing them the ball inside their 30?????????

Grateful it all worked so well. QB made a great decision and got the 1st down. Yet under those circumstances, anyway you cut it this was a bonehead call going for it. :ugeek:

Agree to disagree. That play was huge and took the wind out of bengals sails. It was a keeper the whole way, Isu was not ready at all. watching the replay even if gresch hands it of the RB picks up the first down. That play was Stitt playing to win! :thumb:

I like aggressive, especially when an offense is playing well. I liked the call. Hindsight it's easy to go for or against. I think you can't argue that he will do this when the team is playing well. The difference the first 2 years is that he did it just to do it, because he said he was going to. Now, it seems he is riding the momentum of the game...that's why I liked the call as well. I think this year we will see more of these calls. I agree, though, with 1982...bonehead call the first couple years.

Well then what was he trying to do against EWU? Because he got flamesprayed on here for going for it at about the same point on the field in the 4th quarter against them (and NOT getting the 1st).

I'm perfectly fine with the Griz being a team that just out-scores other teams. It remains to be seen if we can pull it off the remainder of this season, but I like what I see from this quarterback, receiving corp, running backs and offensive line. We also have some speed and talent waiting in the wings in Corbin, Flowers, Moses, etc., not to mention some offensive line talent. We should be able to score enough points.

Of course, we need the defense to slow teams down and get some key stops, but hopefully they'll pick up steam instead of fading.

I also like what I see from young guys like Rodriguez, Favoroso, Olson, Cowans, Cochran, etc. We'll have a good nucleus to work around as we go forward.

We should be 5-2 after Saturday (but no guarantees). I'm optimistic about our future.

Never flamesprayed anyone. It was fine in the Ewu game too.
I really think if this team would just make tackles when they are put into the position to, they can win the rest of the games. I would really like to know the number of yards given up after first contact and or on broken tackles.

If it works - coach is a genius.
If not he should be fired immediately.
This is nothing new (go look back when B. Hauck was at the helm) and will not change in future.
Coach makes a calculated risk... Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.
Fans will continue to bitch.
Gotta love football.

The sad part is ... it's not just the Griz. As discussed on another thread, I truly believe that the reduced "contact" practice time and the use of robot tackling dummies have degraded "the fundamentals" of blocking and tackling. I'm very much afraid it's something we're going to have to get used to.

The thing I see is to many guys throwing a shoulder into the ball carrier or trying to pull the ball loose.
The robots should be good for teaching wrapping up. Pulling the ball loose is great when it works, but how often does it work versus the ball carrier continuing 5 yard down field?
