Post Game: A Grizzly sized beat down

An intra squad scrimmage could not have been less satisfying. The great matchups with the Boise State's, Appalachian State's, etc are history. Griz fans have been weaned into accepting an inferior product under the factual self-fulfilling prophecy that there are no outside programs worthwhile left to bring into Washington-Grizzly Stadium... yeah for sure. And gullible season tix holders continue to pay filet prices for flank steak...big bucks to justify what for many is basically a tailgate social experience...

It was a nice day at the stadium. Good tailgating and good beer (at some places in the stadium. BG looked good (17 completions in a row at one point). It was fun to see the many back-ups and younger guys getting playing time, playing hard, and making plays. Appears to be considerable younger depth in the coming years. Both back-up qb's looked good. Nice to see Rocky KIeever and his induction to Griz hall of fame. He looks great. Saw some of his buddies at the Mo Club on Sat. morning, and they said they wished they hadn't seen Rocky the night before (I think they all went out on the town). Tripp/Coyle were at the game, and hanging with their friends before and after. Was fun to see them. They, of course, look incredibly fit. They work out at my friend's gym in Bellevue.

Montana Tech would have been a bigger test...

Regardless, it was good to see the backups get some valuable PT and was good to get a D1 win for playoff resume.

With Tech or Carroll the $$ stays in Montana and more Montana boys get their time to shine.

Ya and it doesn't count for our playoff resume.

The comment was intended specifically to arouse and irritate the Troll Brigade. Glad it worked. I lied. It's not just my friend; it's also my relative's gym. Tripp said it's the best gym and trainer, and "everybody" goes there. He had been working out there for a few weeks prior to being signed by the Seahawk, I believe.

And the win wouldn't count towards qualifying for the playoffs. It was an ugly game yesterday but I prefer it over any division 2 or lower games.
This, over and over.

Consider UNI beating Iowa State and us beating Miss Valley U are going to be counted the same when it comes to qualifying for the playoffs. Maybe we should reconsider how we should count the wins.

There's really not much to say to summarize a blowout like this. It was pretty clearly expected to go this way today and after a slow start the Griz got rolling and clearly showed who was the better team today. After the opening MVSU touchdown and then the Gus fumble I was wondering if we'd have a game, however a Strahm pick-6 set the tone for the rest of the game and the Griz rolled from there.

Mississippi Valley State served as a division 1 win, which I prefer over beating a division 2 team, but after that this game turned out to be not much of a challenge on the field. I know that the program likes to book a tune-up / bodybag game and this year I'm glad it was a win that counted towards needed division 1 wins. Beyond that, MVSU was a terrible team. I've honestly seen better division 2 teams play in Wa Griz.

A few observations;

- overall a pretty good day again for the o line, just two noticeable breakdowns, both lead to Gustafson fumbles. One was lost, the other ruled a lateral out of bounds. Blocking in the run game was pretty good too.

- a very consistent passing game for Gus, nice to see him dialed in and more accurate today. Hopefully a sign of more to come.

- I liked Homan in the slot in place of a resting JLM. This kid makes a ton of great plays and I like how Stitt and company and trying to find ways to get more of their playmakers on the field at the same time.

-'what an impressive TD catch and run by Keenan Curran. We're seeing more and more our young WRs starting to make plays veteran players usually do.

- Both Bigmham and Horner had good days. These two have settled in to be a dangerous combo of big dudes at the H WR spot.

- Defensively it was a great team effort. Obviously Strahm righted the ship and then we saw almost every linebacker make tremendous plays on the day. The D line had good pressure throughout too.

- it looked to me that the 1st string secondary was on an island the whole game. It worked for the most part but did give up a few longer plays.

- I missed a few of the controversial calls but it sounded like there was some real frustration with officiating. Mostly when Semenza got rocked after a PAT and then real late on a safety... which didn't matter because the defense turned it into a TD a play later.

- some more concerns with kicking and Semenza looked pretty beat up post game...

------

Back to conference play next week with Sac State coming to town. The level of speed and skill will dramatically go up and I'm looking forward to seeing how this team takes today's blowout win and builds on it against a conference foe.

Go Griz!
The complaints in the safety call are unfounded. It was a good call. We made contact out of the end zone and pushed him in. Keep in mind the ball has to completely stay in the end zone. I liked that it riled everyone up because it was kind of dead at hat point but that particular call was a good call. I still booed very loudly, but just yelled that it was a good call in a boo voice.

The ball was not in the end zone when the runner's knee hit the ground, therefore no safety. Our seats are in row 4 at the north 10 yd line on the east side, so we had a great view of the play. The hit on Semenza was chickens--t all the way. I kept hoping one of the Griz would get a chance to lay out #6 during the rest of the game, but sadly not.
