Post game: A chaotic come from behind win

And I don't know.
What they said on the radio is the first call was on the sideline, but it was absolutely bc of the coach. They essentially gave him A LOT of rope so as not to give him his walking papers. I believe it was justified, but the terrible refs, oddly enough, didn’t pull the trigger on that one. I found it awfully ironic based upon their body of work earlier in, and throughout the game. I’m sure LE started sweating about getting them out safely after several of their calls/no calls. I can’t recall a worse group of refs in WA-Griz, and that’s saying something!! The Ref with the glasses last year was a damn close second!

Yes - far too many penalties.
Fault of refs or teams?

Penalties were almost exactly equal between the teams...one had 11 and other had 12. Yardage was also nearly the same....

So how far do the Griz fall in the polls after having “Struggled” with a low ranked team at home, and barely eeking out a win…:coffee:
Honestly, the Griz haven't proven themselves to be a top ten team, and maybe not a top 15 team.

They struggled with an unranked Missouri State. They lost to number 24 UND. They had a warm -up sparring match with Morehead State to hopefully tune the machine up for conference play.

In strolls WCU and then shoves their will to win down Griz nations throat.

If I were to rank them honestly? #14 or #15 right now.

Hauck needs to stop taking his foot off the gas when they are up on points. Playing to maintain a lead almost cost them two games this year.

I would like to see four or five conference games where they have put up 40 or more consistently and I might consider them being worthy of the top five in the BSCC and ten in the nation.

Right now in the Big Sky?

#1 Idaho
#2 Puddy Tats (this one hurts)
#3 UC Davis
#3 Montana
#4 Weber
#5 Sac State

"Hauck needs to stop taking his foot off the gas when they are up on points. Playing to maintain a lead almost cost them two games this year." Explain this comment for the WCU game. I thought they did a nice job closing the game out.

See, you make legit arguments, but then put teams ahead of them that have shown exactly NOTHING to date. UC Davis? Their wins are against 1-3 SUU and 0-4 Utah tech? Cats? OOC SOS is legit almost the worst in the BSC. Idaho? They damned near gave away a 27-3 late 3rd quarter lead against Abilene Christian and their claim to fame is a win over winless Wyoming. Montana is flawed, don't get me wrong, but it's not like there's a shitload of teams that AREN'T--especially in the BSC this year.

Oh, and after that 17-0 lead, Griz outscored them 46-18. So who shoved what down who's throat? Doesn't sound like any foot was taken off any gas, but shoved up their ass instead...

Hauck doesn’t take his foot off the gas too soon.

The most impressive aspect of this game for me was the performance of Ah Yat. In two of the first three games our opponents had the better quarterback, and they probably did in this game as well.

But as BW said earlier, this was a "coming of age" game for him. The skills are there, his ceiling is big sky high. I believe Ah Yat will emerge as the clear leader of this team, with Fife as a competent backup.

He shouldn't take it off the gas at all. That's the point. You play to win, you don't play to maintain a lead, and Hauck is notorious for that.

I understand sportsmanship, but that really has no place in today's sports world. Nowadays it's about money. Period. No one cares how mush sportsmanship you show when you lose or have close games that shouldn't be close at all.

I would personally rather see 72-0 games than 42-35. Why?

1) Playoff positioning. Barely winning isn't going to get a seed in the playoffs.
2) It's ALL about those first two-four seeds in the playoffs.
3) I don't care about conference play or who might do what if the Griz crush the soul out of every team placed in front of them.
4) I am not going to contribute to an NIL or program that is losing or on the verge of losing every game.
5) I have zero confidence in this team winning BECAUSE Hauck always takes the foot off the gas once there is a lead, then plays to maintain it. ALWAYS. He has done that since 2002 and hasn't changed.
6) Why are the other teams ranked so highly even losing? They blow teams out. That matters to the people making the calls.
7)It's all about the playoffs.

Any win is a good win. "on the verge of losing" every game means winning. I'll take that.

And apparently, we differ on another point: I'd prefer close games against competitive teams to that 59-2 bullshit we saw the week prior. Sounds like you'd rather we move down to D2 and absolutely dominate.

Hey, I'd rather win 72-0, too. Absolutely. I think it is a tough spot when it comes to criticizing Hauck on taking his foot off the gas, though, because we were passing while we were ahead at UND and he was heavily criticized for not running the ball and bleeding out the clock, letting UND back into it.

It sometimes feels like "damned if you do, damned if you don't" around Griz Nation at times.

And weren't people complaining that he DIDN'T play to maintain the lead against UND? After that game, the complaint was "we threw way too much, why weren't we pounding the ball and eating up clock, why did Gilman only get 8 carries."

We can't

That is why you need to win with 70 rather than 59. I predicted it and I was shut down by a foot off the gas.

Elrod being non-committal lol.
I am trying to be more diplomatic when I disagree, lol. But, yea, its dumb to me that if we have the lead and we pass the ball, then we need to "run the damn ball" and burn the clock up. When we have a lead and we run the ball, we need to get aggressive and not play Bobby Ball.

Egriz has really taught me, though, that some people follow a team just because they like to criticize it. And that's everyone's right, I just cannot imagine how it is fun.

I have zero problem with your ranking the Griz #14 or #15. It really doesn’t matter at this juncture. What I was looking for was improvement. It happened. Especially at the QB position. I hate when they try and run behind the guards and the opponent is stacking the box. Gilman and Ostmo did phenomenal making cuts. Also, corner (at least one - is a concern.). Griz schedule has been a good one for a team that continues to develop. The Cats and UC Davis have played garbage teams. Idaho is absolutely for real this year, until they aren’t. Spud Kitten game will be a good one to watch. Mellott gets hurt and the Cats are done. No backup. No development of a backup either. They are one injury away from major problems
