Post Game: 1-0

The whole coin flip thing was even more bizarre. The captains come out, the coin is flipped and the ref says "Montana wins the toss and elects to defer". A few minutes late the game is getting ready to start and the Griz kick off return team comes out and lines up on the south side. The ref comes over, waives the Griz off the field and the kick off coverage team comes out and lines up on the north side. The Griz sent out the wrong unit to the wrong side of the field. It was very bizarre.

UNC had open receivers on every pass play. If the QB is a little more accurate and the receivers catch a little better, it would have been a very different game. This is the first live game I've seen this year and the weakness in pass defense was very obvious.

Peter Nguyen is an excellent football player. He was the leader today and it's obvious his team mates look to him for leadership. He does a great job running between the tackles.

I can't figure out why the Griz had no cold weather gear. It was freaking cold in Greeley and all the Griz were in short sleeves and nobody had warmups to wear on the sideline. The weather forecast wasn't a suprise, did someone forget to check and pack the cold weather gear?

MCG, have you been to playoff games in December? MOST Griz players ALWAYS go sleeveless. I don't blame TM for wearing sleeves coming from Paradise, but MOST Griz players won't wear that ish.

I have been to a December playoff game and some players do wear short sleeves, but the players on the sideline always have the big black overcoat thing to wear and there are heaters on the sideline, both of which were absent today.

I think the big coats you're thinking of are gray. I saw them putting one on McKinney when he was out after getting his bell rung.

Peter Nguyen is a small dude with a HUGE heart. He really looked like the only Griz who wanted this one for at least 2 quarters.

Their WR's were open when we ran that damn soft zone scheme. The CB's did well the few times we had press coverage. I honestly expect to see more press as the season progresses. They were much better in press. Our safeties played better, but have a way to go.

It was certainly an unsatisfying win from my point of view. We threw the ball deep a couple times, but it really does you no good if you have no chance of completing them, even if the receiver has 10 yards on the defender. 4 turnovers in the 1st half, but only 10 points to show for them with the offense accounting for none of those points. Poor coaching decision to choose the wind instead of the ball or defer to the 2nd half. WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is not like we are a passing team. The wind should be the least of our concerns. Another missed PAT. Used Counts redshirt on mop up duty.. WTF!!!!!!! I think we could get by without using it because Kirshner is a horse. Why??? Same thing with Hayden Craig??? Nothing those 2 did helped us to win that game today. I had a few WTF moments today. I hope they become less in time, but it might be one of those WTF seasons like we had in 2010.
That first half was so bad is was comical. Dropped passes, lame...lame playcalling - we seem to only be able to play east to west (3rd and 1 - we hand off the ball 4 yards behind the line of scrimmage and run sideways. Un fucking believable). Looked more like Little Griz. TM was lucky Hardy was behind him on that fumble. Overall the offense was pathetic.

The second half kick off was another example of the shoddy coaching on this team. Ugh...

Good - Glad to see the secondary play better and even Tully, who me and many others have been critical of, played a good game. Love the pass rush, it seems to be getting better and better.

I am baffled with the stable of running backs, why we would burn Counts redshirt (see previous comment about coaching)

It was nice having a comfortable win, although the first half was anything but comfortable. Not as confident as I was that Griz will run the table the rest of the regular season...glad they don't have to play Cal Poly this season. Still keeping the faith though. Go Griz!

These Griz need 6 wins for a meaningful 2nd half of the season with no margin for error. So far so good, 1-0 in the 2nd half of the season. It wasn't the prettiest game, the first half was slow but they got rolling late and put the hapless UNC Bears away. I like that the Griz broke through the fog but in no way was this game much of an indicator that they're back. Consider the 3 wins of this 3-3 team have come against three teams that are all 1-4 now. However, it's a step in the right direction, we saw some good stuff and some frustrating stuff today.

My thoughts:

- Plus 5 today I believe, 4 picks and 1 fumble recovery, great stuff. Good picks by the D and very athletic plays. Harris and Dennard are making some good plays and for all the criticism I'll heap on Tully at times I'll give him big props. He had a great pick and quite a few good tackles including a nice TFL. Not sure that Coyle fumble recovery was really a fumble, but hey I'll take it.

- Another game, another missed PAT. Glad it didn't matter too much, Lider's now missed 4 PATs - but he's 7-7 on fieldgoals, go figure.

- O-line ground out a pretty good UNC front 7, it looked like we had nothing going early but they opened up well in the 2nd half. This is the 2nd game in a row where our offense has made good adjustments at halftime, I like that trend.

- I've been told the Griz elected to defer in the 2nd half and wanted to kick again to get the favorable wind position. If that's true (or even possible) that's just a bad decision, especially since it lead to a KR TD. We essentially gave away a possession in this game. That's not good coaching.

- Great game for Peter Nguyen, stats are not out yet but I'm betting 150+. Add in that the Griz (I believe) ran for nearly 350 yards again and our OL and running game is really clicking again.

- Some injuries to watch, Oiland looked pissed - not sure what happened, although Hines did well in his place. Hermanson appeared to hurt his shoulder and did not return, Rominger played in his stead.

- 2 games in a row with no turnovers for McKinney, although he almost had one. Trent is back to gunning the ball well over his WRs heads, had a few deep TDs that would've been scored except he was way too far ahead of them. However he had a good wide open TD pass to Warren and showed pretty good running decisions.

- How about Kirsch? Great power running there, wish he would've got into the end zone for a TD, however a smart pitch back to get Trent in the endzone.

- Defensive player of the game, I'd say, was Brock Coyle. Great day for him - did his best McSurdy impersonation. Hit hard, played smart, was always around the ball, and almost had a TD on that fumble recovery.

- On the heels of seeing Kirsch run so well I'm even more perplexed why they burnt Counts redshirt. They'd better use him a lot for the last 5 games of the season.

- Pass defense in the middle is still shaky, UNC had a few good drives and their one TD drive they really diced up the defense (albeit 2nd string pass D). I got a text from someone saying that it's a good thing UNC's WRs drop a lot of passes. We gave up over 250 to Lobato today... sheesh.

- 4 or 5 more sacks today right? Love how our defenders are getting after the QB.

This win reminds me of when the Griz beat ISU last year, it wasn't the prettiest but they got it done and forced a ton of turnovers. It helped springboard their confidence on defense and they got on a roll. I have no clue if the same will happen but I'm thinking a win with this margin helps. Lots of stuff to still clean up and we may be real thin at safety now.

SUU lost to Sac today I see, they'll be fighting like a cornered team this next weekend, we'd better get ready.

Safe travels home Griz and good work!

Brint, I did like that the Griz O was able to put together a 98 yard drive during the game, even if it was against UNC.

Good point, that was nice to see, a long drive!

Also I'd wonder how much playing on a grass surface hurt the quickness of our offense early.

Does anyone know if indeed Jordan Canada got hurt? I didn't see him at all in the second half and it seems to me that this would be the only reason to burn Counts' redshirt this year. Particularly for what little he was able to contribute. On the positive side, he still has a redshirt year left if they need to use it.

Hopefully that injury to Oiland is not serious. While Hines did an admirable job filling in, we are going to need Kelby's senior leadership going forward.

Kjelby's a junior - but that leadership position and blitz recognition coming from the center is very important, need a sharp eye and a very smart player to do that.

I'd say a great deal. Frankly, it seemed as if the entire game was played in slow motion.

Maybe it was just me but in the first half it seemed as if the team wasn't into the game. The only ones that seemed to be playing hard was the secondary. The body language I noticed in the first half made me think that alot of guys had given up after the EWU loss. It looked like they turned it around a little in the second half tho, so that was good to see.

I think one of the concerns we have is that we are not really hitting. A lot of grabbing and dragging but very few good hits. The way to beat MSU is to hit their running backs hard at the line of scrimmage. Reaching and grabbing won't get it done.

i am concerned big time for this team,,,,first we were playing a bad team, second we have a lack of leadership from coaches and players as we came out and played FLAT in the entire first half,,,no ther way to say it...we looked bad....all the issues have been mentioned in this thread are indeed worriesome to me and are legitimate issues,, from the coin toss to burning red shirts and all the rest...we were lucky to be playing a doormat this weekend..imo....

I agree, but I would not call NCU a doormat team as much as a sleeping spoiler, they seem to give fits to one or two Big Sky teams every year. I think they are or could be a good team, they have talent but just not deep in talent.

:agree:

Especially when Griz special teams were chasing down Gunn on the kickoff return!
