Position Battles: Defense

I would like to see us successfully defend just ONE trick play. Just start with one. That'd be ONE more than all of the last 3-4 years combined.

I agree that UM did poorly defending trick plays last year. However, I would assume you would agree that that is not a scheme or defensive play call issue; it is an individual player discipline issue. Continuing lack of discipline is a position coach, as well as DC as well as head coach issue. Probably mostly the position coach. On the other hand, there are some players that just don't seem to be as disciplined as others and never seem to get as good as they should be, in my experience.

Little bit of column A, little bit of column B. Ty falls in both columns as the DC and LB coach, I'd say he owns quite a bit of our failure against trick plays.

Possibly the funniest post you have have made, and it's not even close!

That you qualified it as "possibly" the funniest post suggests that other posts have been (at least) nearly as hilarious. Therefore, it must be close... :ugeek:

Just seems weird that we never once successfully defended a trick play. Hell, you'd think with blind luck we'd have better success than that.

Kind of interesting fan's thoughts on trick plays in general. Usually, there is quite a bit of hypocrisy when it comes to the subject (and not on egriz, but in football in general). Offensively, fans of their team expect trick plays to work EVERY TIME, and will use the element of surprise as the reason why they should fool an opposing defense. And when they don't work, fans fume about why even bothering with them of they can't work against a defense that didn't know what's coming in the first place. The exact same philosophy applies to the same fan's defense. They don't know what's coming either, yet, fans fume over the inability of a team to defend a trick play, and usually refer to the opposition's use of a trick play as "desperation" and desperation plays should be easily defended. It's a pretty interesting dynamic in the world of football fandom, and that dynamic is pretty simple. For some fans, nothing their team does is ever good enough.

Nice post. I totally agree.

Im not a TG fan but those trick plays that we got burned on last year come down to a lack of individual player dicipline, someone not doing there job not because TG had called the wrong defense alignment.

Well, PhxGriz  I neither expect our trick plays to work every time nor expect us to successfully defend every trick play. I just would like to see us successfully defend ONE.

We do have a poor record in defending trick plays and it certainly has hurt us. Conversely, it would be nice to see our offense run a trick play at least once in a while to even things out a bit. Last year several teams hit big on trick plays and we didn't hit on any that I recall. Joe Glenn used to say he had several drawn up for each game depending on who we were playing. I really like Stitt and our offense, but I haven't seen much in the trick play category from him. Doing it just once in a while keeps the defense honest.

And, for some fans, no stupid calls by a coach causing a loss are bad enough to criticize him. I hope you don't have a mirror close by.

That you qualified it as "possibly" the funniest post suggests that other posts have been (at least) nearly as hilarious. Therefore, it must be close... :ugeek:

Oh, he has provided plenty of laughable posts, I assure you!

I don't know about the NFL comment but Sanders is a returning starter and a senior to boot. If the coaching staff admitted to being worried about him, I'd be very worried.....

The only laugh is in the one doing the criticizing of my post. Unlike some, I am not afraid to go out on the limb now and then. I feel physically that Sanders has a chance. Yes, he has to improve his pass coverage skills. Feel free to post my laughable posts. I sure in the hell was closer than you, when I said I thought Cherry would get a shot at the NBA. Granted, he did not stick, but he did have a chance to live his dream. You thought he would never even sniff the NBA. As for other GRIZ in the pros, many of us thought the guys who have made it had a chance.

I know I have a lot less "laughable" post than you do. I doubt you want to compare who the more reputable egrizzer is here, based on the opinions of other egrizzers. You are the biggest joke of all here. How many aliases are you up to now, anyway?

Yeah, Cherry picked up his NBA participation trophy, something you can identify with. :coffee:

The pedestrian fans look at his physique, and assume that translates to the football field. I guess they didn't see the picture of the physique on the kid who transferred from Western and tried to walk-on to the Griz. He didn't make it, but is a great rugby player. Sanders takes more bad angles than AzGrizFan.

You keep using that word. I don't think that word means what you think it means...
