Position Battles: Defense

If Strong can beat out Sandry, the dude is a hell of a player.

I have more concerns with Y. Sanders than anyone else in this group, particularly in run support.
Yamen was a little inconsistent last season. The Idaho State game in particular I remember seeing him take a lot of bad angles in run support. If he can shore that stuff up he will make a real big impact on defense.

We've seen AWFUL angles from the safeties for the past 5-6 seasons. That is something I expect Semore (and Shann) will address.

Yamen Sanders is considered one of the top three returning safeties in the league by the coaches in the conference. I'll take their word for it. He's an absolute stud, and he is absolutely the safety on the Griz roster who the Griz coaches have NO concerns over.

Wondering if we'll see him some @ LB, allowing Semore to get another Safety or CB-type on the field in situations as needed? His social media postings seem to suggest he's muscled up a bit for this season.

He'll be pissing in a cup before you know it.

Yamen Sanders should be the least of our defensive personnel worries. He will be a beast this year. I expect him to be playing on Sundays.

I totally think our Defense will be better than last year. It all starts up front and we are better up front than we have been in years. Our LB's are very talented and depth is very good. CB is a concern but we have talent there, having a aggressive D line all help the corners. Safety is as good as we have had in years. Add in an aggressive defensive coordinator who will bring it and out D will wreak havoc on the BSC. Another thing I like is DL, LB and DB will have 1 guy who is extremely over the top aggressive and tenacious with Kidder, Strahm and Srtong.

RC, or anyone, what is the source of this wording? "Add in an aggressive defensive coordinator who will bring it". Have the coaches said that the DC or defense will be more aggressive and "bring it"? I may have missed that, but I keep seeing similar comments on egriz and am wondering if that's accurate.

Don't want to speak for Brint, but his scrimmage play by plays described a pretty aggressive scheme. He mentioned it a couple times as well.

I already consulted Brint. He hadn't seen or heard the coaches saying the defense would be more aggressive and be bringing it more.

I am stating this from 2 sources one being a parent of a player the other from a coach. I won't say which coach, because now that I think about it none of coach Stitts public statements have said that.

Guess we'll see once the season gets going. No need to go off topic here gents.

Semore mentioned his defense would be attacking the ball more this year. (old news) Trying to get turnovers via knocking the ball out causing fumbles.

All great stuff. I'd probably throw Jerrin Williams into the discussion at safety as well. Came down with a couple interceptions and a big-bodied safety. That position will be in great hands this season.

I just want to see Jerrin on the field contributing. He is a big play waiting to happen. I hear, his only weakness is finding consistency.

BW, it seems when you post these days, you are knowing Growler will attempt to disagree with you on something. I honestly feel, it does not matter how you post, or what you post. No matter what he will nitpick, disagree, and do his damn best to get into into it with you. I am surprised he has not done so far in this thread. Or did he get another timeout?

Great insight BW. It will be interesting to see how the defense looks this season with a new DC. :thumb:

Your obsession with me is duly noted again. Bottom line is, Wally doesn't know any more about this stuff than any other poster. Cheap entertainment, however. I will say this however..... if Delaney is the best we can field at the safety position, we are for a very long season on defense. He would have trouble starting for Montana Tech.

Possibly the funniest post you have have made, and it's not even close!

As a junior Delany would start for every single team in the Frontier at safety and it wouldn't be close. I don't think he's a starter for the Griz. They are so absolutely loaded at safety now. But, he's proven himself, so much so, Stitt bumped his schollie in the spring.

I remember reading that Shann considered him the most coachable one of the group. I'm glad we've got him on the depth chart!

I agree. I've been impressed with how Delaney has progressed. There just happens to be a lot of talent at S right now.

And my second-cousin deserves it too, he is playing well.

Personally, I'd just like to see us not get beat by the big play! Ty had some tendencies defensively that made that happen too much last year! Hope not to "Semore" of that this year! F#*%ing funny, eh?

I too hope the defense is much better at not giving up the big play. The D gave up way too many of those plays last year. I don't recall nearly as many in prior years. I recall the coaches saying that one of them had been because of the good/lucky offensive call and execution, which did take advantage of a vulnerability in the called defense. This happens occasionally. However, my impression was that most or many of the big plays came from mistakes and lack of discipline by individual players, and not the defense or scheme. Perhaps Stitt's comments about being a more disciplined team include being more disciplined on defense and not giving up as many big plays.
