Portland State Regular Season Predictions

Griz til I die

4 Conference Previews to go! Now on to Portland State who IMO will be the worst team in the Big Sky this year. Now that Dante Chachere is gone, I think it's gonna really be a struggle for the Viks. Let's get it on!

August 23 vs. Tarleton State - L. Week 0 on ESPN2. Kudos to PSU for convincing Tarleton to come play them in Portland. Tarleton is one of the few playoff teams that returns their QB in Victor Gabalis and I expect him to have a big game. Texans win handily.

August 30 @ BYU - L. A lot of controversy at BYU surrounding the scandal with the QB. It may derail their season. That said, they're still gonna win this game easily.

September 6 @ North Dakota - L. The Viks will play in Grand Forks the week before UND comes to Missoula. Probably gonna be another tough day for Barney's crew.

September 13 @ Hawaii - L. Now this is a road trip I'd love to see the Griz make at some point. I would go lol. The Warriors have fallen on hard times but do seem to be improving. I expect them to be ok this year. Hawaii wins at home.

September 20 BYE

September 27 vs. Northern Arizona - L. Over a month between home games for PSU. Won't be a pleasant return home either. Jacks roll.

October 4 @ Eastern Washington - L. I can't see Eastern losing this game at home.

October 11 BYE

October 18 vs. Weber State - W. I'll give PSU the benefit of the doubt at home. Weber is not good and PSU has a chance in this one.

October 25 @ Idaho - L. Ya, another long day for the Viks.

November 1 @ Cal Poly - L. If this game were in Portland, I might give it to them, but being it's on the road, I'm giving it to Poly.

November 8 vs. Sacramento State - L. Another long day.

November 15 vs. Montana - L. The long awaited return to Providence Park. I expect it to be full of Griz fans and rocking for the Griz. Griz roll.

November 22 @ Northern Colorado - L. I predicted last week UNC would win this game, and I'll stick with that. This could be the battle for last place. UNC wins a tight one at home.

I got Portland State going 1-11. I really can't see them doing any better than 2-10. Gonna be a tough year. That's my prediction. Thoughts???

I think you're probably very right, but my god, that is brutal. I'm wondering how long Robbie stays to keep growing as a coach with the state of that program.

I still see Barney being on our staff as an analyst before too long, but PSU must know that he is the best ambassador they are going to get and that no coach is going to fix their football program.

Portland State is a fun road game destination but that is about it with this program. They have never been worth a shit at the D1 level. They have 0 playoff wins ever at the D1 level.

Part of me wonders if we got SUU and UT-Tech because of the financial issues at EWU and Portland State and the talk of them potentially losing Football.

Regardless 3 win season is their cieling, and still annoyed we have to have them as a rival instead of Idaho.

Well now that they're about to re-make the schedule, we might be able to dump them as a protected rival.

You would think someone who played their high school ball across the Columbia from Portland would have a good time recruiting the area and creating a power team in Oregon. Has Oregon high school football dropped or are the HS kids being recruited more heavily by the P4 and G5 teams?

Being recruited by the bigger teams, and my understanding is that PSU is heavily lacking facilities and money without any real plan to improve them. Barney is, from what I've heard, very well liked locally and nobody seems to blame him but instead just seem to have accepted that PSU football will be what it will be. He was literally buying the attendees' beer at one point to get a better turnout. The "stadium" is terrible and doubles as softball fields.

I'm not disagreeing with you by any means, they are going to have their work cut out for them this year, but I have them going 2-10 with wins over Cal Poly and Northern Colorado.
I went to a game at providence park I think in 2006. It is really set up for baseball more than anything so there are kind of odd viewing angles. The venders love when we show up though, they told me they sell more beer at that game than any 3 games combined, back when all the home games were there. It is far better than Dornblaser, it is just a unique venue for sure though.

No baseball in Providence. Providence Park was renovated with a soccer specific design. It isn't 2006 anymore.

Sorry that it upset you so much that I don't keep up with the status of Portland's facilities. Maybe if they had a championship more recent than the 1977 Blazers, they would have a bigger following, but then if a city full of liberals was really concerned about it, they would do something about all the people living in tents under the freeways than renovating a stadium for soccer and kicking the local university out.
Yes, it was 2006 when I visited there, but how many games did they play after that to begin with? I was about to retire from 23 plus years in the Army at that time and stayed with my sister in Lake Oswego and I believe she and her husband were upset because that whole project had just been voted in. I have been back there more than a handful of times to visit my sister, but I haven't gone downtown to see the place because I don't really care if they play lawn darts or anything else there.
Apparently, you have some attachment to it, so we'll see if they ever play another game there again and wish you the best if that's what you would like to have happen.
