Portland Game Thread

Ill still be at every game and support this team through thick and thin but last night was frustrating. I love the Griz and have fun at games whether they win or lose but we should still beat portland.

BTW: He got fouled on that last play

After reading the Missoulain account of the game and Tinkle post game comments I think this team need to display more discipline and follow the game plan the coaches laid out. This is one of those deal - in my opinion- the first time it happens it is the players fault, the second time it is on the coaches head.

Teams will give you somethings in the hope that it will take you out of your game plan, and play their game. I am not sure if this was totally the case but the Griz need to show discipline and play their game. The plan the coach laid out. Griz have the top talent in the league (with Weber) they need to dictate and not follow.

It is one frick'n game!!! You Griz need to learn that after a big upset itis time to support the team, not to pile on. This is pathetic!!!

That is because the norm has become that we are the upsetees, not the upsetors.....

I don't know if anybody has already said this but Cameron Rundles played like an idiot. Seriously, I cannot remember if we were down by one or up by one but there was about a 1:12 on the clock we had just got the ball, and he brings it down and shoots a three off the dribble with a man in his face, and bricks it. That was just one of multiple poor shot decisions by him that night. That shot is probably one of the worst decisions you can make in that situation. I say bench his ass until he starts playing smart bball like he was last year.

I hope the norm in Missoula doesn't become coaches that can recruit better than anyone in the conference yet aren't able to put together cohesive gameplans that allow them to consistently win when they need to. It's happening already in football.

Granted, it's early in the season and in Tinkle's head coaching career, but it feels like eerie foreshadowing.

WOW! You guys will hate me for this, but I think this thread sums up why UM is so hesitent to make the jump to the FBS.

Fans. Fans are the customers. Customers drive the business. If UM moved up and we went 6-6, attendance would drop, blah blah blah.....

I agree with all of this, and it is exemplified in this thread. I almost brought this up during the CSF game when someone said "it's over!" with like 14 min. to play. This always happened when I was there too. Students would show up for the first few games, then fewer, then fewer, then x-mas break, then nobody.

Seriously now. You guys quit on a team so fast it's blinding. This, I think also explains how some of you like to talk crap about GU losing a hard fought battle and expect Lou and I to feel bad about our team for it (Morrison, UCLA, tears, etc.). To some of you guys, losing a hard fought battle is a reason to be ashamed. See, when GU loses to Texas Tech, I'm pissed, but I know it doesn't really matter, and a loss would probably make us better in March anyway.

Also, UM BB is in the stage right now that is the most fun for fans. Every time you guys go to the Dahlberg Den, there is the potential for an exiting game. Every win means much more to UM than it does to GU or UCLA or WSU. It's like a dollar meaning more to a homeless guy than to a middle class guy. Let me put it this way: When GU beats up on Idaho, we were supposed to, so we get less enjoyment. This holds for all but about 20 opponents in the nation right now--we are supposed to beat them, so a win doesn't feel as good. However, we still are subject to all the disappointments stemming from losing to anyone. Sound like Griz FB to anyone????
Conversely, UM BB fans get tons of enjoyment from any win. Yes, they are still subject to the pains of losing, but can balance it out with fewer wins than it would take GU to balance it out. This fact, coupled with your guys' rabid passion for the Griz, should make this the most exiting period of Griz BB. During the rise of a program, the losses make the wins so much sweeter....

If Griz FB fans all felt this way, I'm sure UM could make the jump and have success. In the meantime, it wouldn't hurt to show the AD that you will be just as passionate about a mediocre program as you would a juggernaut.

Good post. I agree give Tinks and the team time to work things out.

It's tough. It is. But I'm finding a way. As CDA mentioned in another post... the only way we get into the dance is through conference so the OOC doesn't matter too much. This road trip could be rough though, if we win a couple of these i'll be ecstatic.

I havent lost one ounce of passion for this team. I love Grizzly basketball win or lose. Most people arent like me though and only like success, nothing i can do about that. I get students to the game and there is not alot else i can do.

Good for you Swilly! A true Griz fan is there when things are good, and more importantly when they are not. The OOC means nothing anyway, so let's be patient and watch the young guys blend in. In case anyone hadn't noticed, Nevada is struggling right now too, despite having a recruiting class rated better than Gonzaga.

nevada does indeed have one of the top recruiting classes for 2008, led by local product luke babbitt, rated one of the top power forwards in the counry. it would be remarkable however if these kids were responsible for nevada's current stuggles, since all are still seniors in high school.

I’m late posting this, but I attended the Portland game, and have to say it was the worst performance by a Grizzly team that I've seen in over forty years. Portland was not a good team, but you could see in their eyes halfway through the first half that they believed they would win the game.

Andrew Strait is the reigning conference player of the year, and the Griz flat out refused to get him the ball in the post. And as Tinkle commented afterwards, part of the reluctance to get the ball to the post players was that the post players didn’t go strong to the basket.

The defense and rebounding were poor. The overall play on both ends was lackluster and uninspired. In short, it was an embarrassment. Really, really bad.
