PORTAL QUESTION

Sport

Well-known member
I don’t know if this has been addressed by Bobby but the question relates to players going into the portal. I know Bobby’s attitude in the past has been “your either in or your out” there’s no middle ground here with Bobby.
I don’t think there’s any question that these so called agents are scum. Not sure I made myself clear on that, agents are scum of the earth. Some maybe looking out for themselves and not the best interest of the players. I’d be interested to know what percentage of a players NIL goes to the agent?
Back to my question about Bobby. Does he or anyone on his staff try and convince a player who has entered the portal but doesn’t get what an agent has promised the ability to rejoin the team? We know Bobby’s big on loyalty but with this whole portal and NIL thing maybe he’s softened his approach?
We seem to be having an exodus of a few of the starters which is very disconcerting.

It’s the Wild West. Professional licensed agents are capped at what they can make which is why they incentivized to fight for better contracts for their clients. There is nobody holding these so called agents accountable and some are taking much higher percentages which is why they are pushing guys to explore the free market. I’m sure they cut and run when guys don’t get picked up and are left without a scholarship somewhere. Extremely predatory as opposed to a professional relationship.

Nobody knows how Bobby handles his players when they decide to hit the portal. And to say that he tells the players either your in or your out isn't true. Nobody knows! He might allow them to enter the portal with the understanding that in the meantime we will look for your replacement and if we find one then that player will get your scholarship. We will allow you to come back to the team, but it first needs to be voted on by the team and you will no longer have your scholarship.
As far as what a kid might be promised to entice him to enter the portal is never guaranteed money. I know a bunch of kids who did well, and an agent, donor or someone with another program contacted them enticing them to leave and come to another school. For example, this player was offered 1 million to come, so they entered the portal and went to the school offering him the money. As soon as spring ball came around and the coaches saw him in person and what he was capable of, they told him they weren't interested. So the kid didn't get the million he was promised.
I feel sorry for a lot of these kids who enter the portal and nobody with experience or knowledge is looking out for them. And 9l10 times the kids parents don't know any better either. Before even talking to someone with experience or knowledge on the subject or doing research, they enter the portal because of a conversation they had with a person they've never met.

There has to be some way to protect the players and protect the investors. Binding contracts are important and it seems like everything in this is a handshake deal. So many people are getting screwed in this era.

The agents are not the problem. It’s the NCAA for failing to do the one thing they are obligated to do. Govern. What’s happening now requires contracts.

If the NCAA ever gets around to writing a rule or two regarding the portal and NIL, agents will actually be a necessity, and a very good thing. They will be looking out for the players interests.

Some sort of regulation requiring the agent to have a fiduciary responsibility to the player would be good too.

I think the players and parents need to do research before even entering the portal. There are some good people out there that do help the players and don't ask for anything in return. But these players and parents shouldn't assume anything. They get blinded by dollar signs but don't look at the big picture. The worst is when a kid who hasn't proven himself yet believes he should be getting paid or should be starting. And instead of putting in the work where he's already at, enters the portal and finds another team. Most of the time that kid ends up in the same spot he was already at or worse, not playing at all. I don't know the percentages but from what I see, kids who transfer either stay stagnant or don't get better on paper.

NCAA is a little cautious for good reason. Legal issues continue to arise.

Hard to govern when you have no actual authority to enforce your own rules. Conferences are the last line of actually dictating and enforcing rules.

I’d be shocked if that wasn’t part of the agent/player agreement. An agent that isn’t acting in their clients best interests will not get much business.

But, the NCAA needs regulations. And they are 1000% asleep at the wheel

Unless Bobby has done a 360 change, he said early on a few years ago when the portal first started becoming an issue that once you were in it, you were no longer a Griz football player and that door was shut closed. I’m assuming that is still his attitude.

I saw that Michigan State already has about 40 in the Portal. Saw one good player mentioned as a possible returner. Saw that Connor Moore, the former Cat and starting right tackle this season, announced he was staying. Think I read that 10 OL had already gone to the Portal.

I think it's probably too late for much in terms of regulations. They missed their opportunity. Now, almost anything they would try to regulate, would get challenged in court as an antitrust or some violation. I think the former Cat Asst AD who was the NCAA executive director, totally goofed up years ago.

Not true at all. Bobby did allow McDowell to come back to the team after entering the portal. But I believe Bobby got the whole team involved and asked them how they felt about it if he returned. So he had the team vote on it, which is a good thing in my opinion. To me, this decision is never black and white with Bobby. I believe he handles each one differently depending on other circumstances.

The griz did not have 40 qualified players to enter the portal. The team is almost depleted as it is now. We had 39 graduate so I guess that could be counted as leaving for the NFL portal/draft.

Valid point.

Cliff got completely fucked over by our Advisors. At least according to him, He was legitimately going to attend Temple, but he somehow didn't have the right credits or something. Then he attempted to come back as allowed by bobby but the team voted against it. really unfortunate situation, especially for someone who seems to be a little behind in every area except football.

I don't know where you're getting your information but I know for a fact that the players voted to have him back on the team. The whole team was shocked that he chose to go to McNeese especially after they voted him back on the team and was telling players he was coming back. So don't come on here and lie and makeup things you don't know anything about.

I am just saying what I had heard, That he 1. Academically was pretty fucked and 2.that they didn't vote for him to come back. Just repeating what I've heard and what I heard was they didn't vote for him to come back.

just conjecture here, but it seems to me that those hitting the transfer portal sometimes don't realize that they are competing not only with other portal transfers and current players on a team who have been developing as back-ups, but also the next batch of high school players who are graduating.
