Poor season.. offense or defense to blame?

This is just a spinoff of pussycatkillerz playoffs in 2013 thread. The discussion in that thread has become who was more to fault for the losing season, the offense or the defense. That being said, If we could go back to august before our first game and magically change things up, how would you do it? I have come up with two options for you to choose from and discuss.

1) Keep the offense exactly the same but have a killer defense
or
2) Keep the defense the same but have JJ at qb on offense.

Discuss.

I take JJ on offense.

3) Have the Good Football Fairy use his magic wand and turn Delaney, Rosie, and Ty into effective football coaches. Like one of the beginning scenes of "Pinocchio." The role of Geppetto can be played by Hammer.

Rosie is gone.

Anyways, obviously 1. A killer defense wins championships. A defense that has more problems than a black community, does not.

Gee, the last time we heard the race card being played in America was 10-9-8-7-6...... seconds ago. Question for you......... are Caucasian ladies allowed to enter the Miss Black America contest held annually? :? 8-)

As for the subject of this post, our offense was among the worst in all of FCS football. Yeah yeah, I know that we ranked near the top in rushing yards per game. Unfortunately, when a team is one-dimensional, it is very easy to defend. Wofford and others running the wishbone type offense might be successful, because they can break long plays at any time out of that formation. But when we line up in a spread, single back formation, with the ability only to run the ball, we are very easy to defend.

Second, if anyone out there thinks that we do not have serious problems with our secondary on defense, I would question their football knowledge.

I'll take JJ back at QB, as I'm pretty certain Trod isn't transferring to UM, and keep the same exact defense and pray Tully and Hermy improve. I actually think we have extremely talented corners that made a lot of rookie mistakes this season.

Bear Pause, I lobbied for you to come back as Growler, not under a new screen name.

If JJ was QB, the offense wouldn't have been one dimensional, and could have put up some big numbers. Unfortunately, the defense didn't get it together until the Cat game, so huge offensive production would have been needed to offset the defense, especially the play of the secondary.

Unfortunately, this season's "flop" was a TEAM effort. You can also add Special Teams and Coaches to this discussion.

UM is ranked 14th in total offense now, 11th in rushing offense, 27th in scoring. The offense "was among the worst in FCS"? Now that's pretty funny.

The offense was the problem IMO-the quarterback position needs to be changed. If they can't get Johnson back on the field the Griz need a drop down. I would love to see em lose the spread crap. I hate it when they are inside the 5 and they use the shotgun formation. It is just stupid use your size up front and pound the ball. Don't make 1st and goal from the 5 first and goal fron the 10.

I like this post. Honestly, I would say a better coaching decision with time managment and offensive play calling... and a better coaching of kickers in off season. that is it. we had a clean playoff record if the coaches knew how to play the clock. The big crazy thought too... we had freshmans on the field playing jr. sr. vets and we had almost every game in our pocket :o Go Griz :thumb:

With JJ....

Montana beats App, EWU, MSU and SUU. UND is still a toss-up as SSH had a pretty good game there when he came in and NAU is a tough call as the 'Jacks had a great 2nd half running that Montana could not stop.

5-6 could have been 9-2.... :twocents:

Looking back now the defense gave up alot of big plays down the stretch against Eastern and all game vs North Dakota, but we actually had a chance to win pretty much every game that we lost, not sure if we had a chance vs NAU in the 4th I don't remember. Poor qb play equals losing close games, either by the qb not making plays, or the coaches not having the faith in the QB to call a play going down the field. This year was tough, but it is not like the Griz were dominated or pushed around by anyone all season. That sweep option that the kept running after SSH came in was one of the worst plays that I have ever seen and they seemed to run it on 3rd and short and always lost yards.

Depends on the game. D secondary was pretty bad at ND. Special Teams get a vote as well. Offense was one of best in FCS but scoring offense I don't believe was to great.

Don't try and rationalize it. Makes ya sound like a damn cat fan. Would we have had a better record with JJ? Probably. But guess what, we didn't have JJ, and we went 5-6. Period.

I realize that but the premise of the thread was...O or D to blame??? My :twocents: was that Montana was in most games until the end and with a QB like JJ I can see Montana putting even more points on the board in those games.
