This little game is much more fun when the Griz win.

Going into the weekend, we knew four ranked teams would end up with losses ... since they were playing other ranked teams. But add in three games where unranked teams upset ranked teams, and you can expect some stirring of the pot.

I project that Villanova will drop just four spots, since they lost by only one point to a ranked team, on the road. It would not surprise me if they did not go down even that far. Illinois State was also on the road and lost to a ranked team; however, they lost to #22, and by a considerably larger margin.

With the I-State and MSU losses, I project that the Griz will squeak back into the top ten.

Of course, MSU's loss was also on the road ... but to an unranked team. The fact that Cal Poly should have been ranked may soften the blow a bit, so I can see the kitties being around #12 rather than the #14 the normal “formula” suggests.

The same factor -- that many pollsters might feel JMU should have been ranked -- might help W&M stay a bit higher, but that 5-4 record is just ugly. Same goes for SDSU: Getting clobbered on the road by the best team in FCS might not hurt them that much ... except they too now have a 5-4 record.

Of course, UNI also has a 5-4 record, but they’ve been gaining momentum, so: Who knows?

When you’re barely into the top-25, you just can’t afford to lose a game. With Albany and SFA dropping out, two spots open up. If the pollsters don’t give one of those to Cal Poly, then ... screw the polls. It was a toss-up between NAU (second among “others receiving votes” last week) and JMU. Despite some good recent publicity from TSN for the Big Sky, I just don’t see the pollsters adding two BSC teams to the top-25 at the same time. So I went with JMU. (The fact that NAU had so much trouble with pathetic Weber State won’t help them either.)

I think Northern Iowa will leapfrog us (and about 13 other teams) into the top ten, given the love affair between the pollsters and the Missouri Valley Conference.

16 or so but Idaho State and Cal Poly better be ranked or the poll is crap
Of course the polls are crap, but they give us something else to bitch about ... besides play-calling, proper use (or not) of the 2/3 players on the roster, etc. So they do perform a "public service." :D

Here's the problem for ISU. Last week, Cal Poly earned 203 points -- down among the "others receiving votes" -- technically placing them #28. Pollsters should have no problem moving them into the top-25. In that same poll, ISU got 16 points, placing them at an unofficial #45. They won, but who did they beat? A pitiful Portland State team that is now 3-6. Not too impressive.

FWIW, NAU received 245 points last week, for an unofficial #27 ranking. For the reasons noted in my original posting, I'd say it's no better than 50-50 they get in. I'd like to be wrong, and knock out one or two more of those 5-4 teams, but I really don't see that happening.

:agree: Truly, that would not shock me either. :o

MVFC is 7-1 vs the BSC this year. Griz over South Dakota being the lone win.

so that makes a 5-4 UNI a top ten team?

I don't think top ten. It varies week to week with UNI, from bottom feeder to a high ranked team. If you take FBS losses out of it, they would be right up there with UM and from a better conference taking into account the 7-1. So the polls would likely think higher of the MVFC than the Big Sky based on the numbers. I don't think that's bias.

5-4 is not a top 15 team, even if it is UNI and even if they are in the MVC
