He was an all around great player.....i love thinking back on that team...Went to the Boston College game in SLC what an exciting first half....very disapointed when they pulled away from us...too much big east power i guess....seemed their biggs swatted nearly every layup attempt andrew had! Great experince thoughPotomac Griz said:Lots of great memories in Dahlberg over the years! Criswell's dunk is right up there.
That was one hell of a team! They flat out dominated Stanford that year here 88-69. Halftime score was 44-31. Hasquet couldn't miss that game. He was 4-4 from 3 point range with 20 points. Virgil Matthews had 23 points, 8 assists, 7 rebounds and 3 steals. It's weird thinking how when Matthews first came to the Griz he didn't start getting significant playing time until an injury opened up a spot. The guard tandem of Matthews (who could play the 1, 2, or 3) and Criswell gave the Griz an awesome backcourt the year we beat Nevada in the NCAA tournament!
I think one of the funniest memories I have from Dahlberg was when we were playing Idaho here Idaho was down by 2 or something with time running out when Orlando Lightfoot hit around a half court shot to win the game for Idaho. All of the Idaho fans sitting in our section went nuts.... problem was he took like 5 steps before he threw the ball up and the refs had called him for travelling. They got very quiet all of a sudden![]()
This years team is definitely worth checking out! The ticket prices are cheap too. The Griz have had 3 straight 20+ win seasons including a 25 win season last year.
Hopefully we'll get some basketball fans back on the bandwagon soon so Dahlberg can be a huge homecourt advantage for the Griz again!
Their bigs were definitely too much later in the game. Tough matchup going against Jared Dudley and Craig Smith (both ended up in the NBA). Smith was a beast inside for them. They had a 6'10" center too who was pretty damn good defensively if I remember right.
I was a big fan of Matthews too. He seemed to do everything well and could play multiple positions. In his first year here after he finally started getting more playing time, I remember the Bobcat coach made a comment about how he was a big difference maker for the Griz in the tournament. They hadn't really seen much of him in the conference season, but the Cats got to know him very well in the Big Sky Tournament game. He had 13 points, 8 assists and 6 rebounds off the bench in that game.
