Playoff seeding question?

As it looks right now, it is entirely possible that NAU will win the conference auto bid (yes things can change.) I was wondering if there has ever been an instance where a team got the auto bid for the conference and had a team below them seeded higher in the playoffs. Currently they are unranked or 25th it looks like. Would this be something that is even possible? I just can't see them being seeded higher than some of the other BS teams at this time. Just wondering.

My short answer is, Yes, I think so. Seeding for past FCS playoffs are not the easiest things to dig out of the old records, so I can't back that statement up. However, I'm pretty sure that's happened more that once in the CAA. I also seem to recall it happening in the SoCon several years ago. Can't recall it happening in the Big Sky.

While I'd have to double check I believe that in 2002 and maybe also 2003 MSU won the auto-bid but the Griz were still higher seeds - although that was just the home-game bidding system. Not sure how that breaks down.

Seems possible. The old BSC system used to have teams who didnt win their conference championship game make it to the NC, so I cant imagine why EWU or UM couldnt finish higher than them based on the overall resume.

Ah yes, the good old days. I'm pretty sure you're right.

Thinking specifically of 2002, the Griz finished the season at 10-2 while the Cats finished the season at 7-5. However both teams were 5-2 in conference and the Cats won the head to head and thus the auto-bid. MSU wasn't ranked that season... I don't think, but went to the playoffs and lost @ McNeese State in the 1st round. While the Griz hosted Northwestern State and won and then went to McNeese and also lost in the 2nd round.

I remember that loss to McNeese well. It was a game we should have won. Can't remember the specific way we lost (very late in the game). but I remember that we were the better team and should have won.

Yes, it is definitely possible since each conference determines their own auto-bid/representative through their own criteria/tie-breakers during conference play (disregarding OOC games unless to break a tie like the BSC). The selection committee seeds teams based off of the overall season regardless of conference standings.

Just last year, Montana got a higher seed than NAU because they had more wins and a better overall record than NAU yet lost to NAU in the head-to-head matchup and finished below them in the conference standings. Ugh, the NAU fans were whining all week about that. (NAU wasn't the auto-bid but it's a similar situation to your question.)

If nau,cal poly, and Montana are the only one loss teams who wins the conference?
Just a hypothetical.....

He lost three of his last four while negotiating his new deal. Lost his first game at UM. Then he went 38-2 in between. Were we an elite program in that period?

Just a couple years ago Weber beat us in regular season, but we got the seed and the home game in the playoffs. Also, it's very possible for a mediocre team to win their conference and get into the playoffs with a 6-5 record, while some other team in their conference is 9-2 or something like that but has two conference losses. Happened just a couple years ago with the Big South I believe.

The catch-phrase is "body of work." Sometimes it really does seem to mean something in terms of the seeds.

Didn't Weebs have to play playoff game against the Griz in Missoula that year, despite winning the autobid? I think the autobid has zero impact on the playoff seeding.

They sure did, that was 2008. If you didn't get a seed in the playoffs the only thing that really mattered was money and UM could out bid everyone.

Hard to believe Weber was the BSC autobid just 5 seasons ago.

Playoffs? Playoffs???? Funny how NAU could make the playoffs. A product of the realigned BSC, Fulertons Folly. Take note, ISU is in the hunt, and they are good. Kramers Kreation. That leaves EWU, UM, MSU, and Cal Poly eating the crumbs from the table. Who gets to watch the "playoffs" on TV? Four or five BSC teams in the playoffs is a joke, especially since their stellar performance last year.

Yep. And they had a pretty credible at-large bid in 2009, when they were 6-2 in conference. Unfortunately, they had to travel to William & Mary, where they got drubbed 38-0 in the first round.

After that they had two years of mediocrity (6-5) and (5-6) with 5-3 in conference both years. Since then, they've won four games (total, including this season). Ouch! :o
