Playoff Criteria - Awesome Breakdown with Sam Herder and the FCS Chair

This is a great listen if you’re wanting to learn more about playoff criteria, what the committee looks at, and how it all works.

Lot of good info and criteria includes:
- win loss record
- simple rating system
- strength of schedule
- coaches poll
- stats poll
- availability of players at time of win/loss
- regional advisory committee
- FBS win vs loss
- is there such a thing as a good loss….yes, he mentions taking Sac St to overtime specifically and how that is considered
- ranked wins (does it count as a quality win if you beat a ranked team who then eventually falls out of rankings)
- regionalization
- seeding

I’m sticking by my guns, a 7-4 Griz team still has a very good chance of making the field. Especially considering all these guys just discussed.

Sounds like the committee has been guided down the path that the Griz are regardless of this weekends results. I know FCS is a dog in terms of cost vs revenues but dang.

Using that criteria a 5-6 team could get in because they were missing starters and had a strong SOS and kept games close.

Is there still a suggested number of D-I wins criteria?

Doesn't look like it from the OP post

Yes, they still want to see the 7 FCS win threshold. They may consider a 6 win team if they check all the other boxes or maybe one of the losses was to FBS but 7 is kind of the magic number.

I could see the loss at Sac not hurting us as much, lots to consider in that loss. LJ going down cheap shot. BAD call, and lost in overtime at their house. LJ was playing so well in that game we would have smoked them. And had we not been down several players at Weber would have been the same.

I would get rid of the coaches poll. Do you really think coaches have the time to follow all the other teams in the country and where they fall?

Most of the writers in the STATS poll don't follow teams very closely outside of their region, so it's the same thing.

Good point

Not really concerned, FCS only has 2 legitimate conferences. 24 teams make the playoffs and 50% of those teams with come from these conferences and the odds are 99.9999% the national champion will be from the MVC or Big Sky.

I find it a little strange that Hauck basically has told his players we’ve punched our playoff ticket, which is patently false

I’m not sure that is the case. He had said it to the media. What he says in locker room could be entirely different. I think he was making his case to the media that they should be in. Bobby being Bobby.

While I agree with this sentiment, the same could be said for the NCAA basketball tournament. Would you be ok with the Griz NEVER having a chance to go to the big dance?

Has the BSC/MVC ever had 50% of the bracket since it went to 24 teams? Pretty sure that I know the answer.

Really sucks to hear the big sky preseason national champions might not make the field. Makes me realize how grateful I am to see football in December and January.

When the Cats got thumped by the Griz, how far will the Cats fall? Will they still get a seed? Not sure they would deserve one.

Come Saturday at 4:00 pm not much will matter. Sac State will deservingly win the conference with a 2 seed. I congratulate them for playing all the tough teams in the conference ie..Montana, Idaho, Weber, and Davis. That’s a hell, of a schedule to survive. msu will be left with a 7-8 (non deserving)seed wondering what the hell hit ‘em. Hopefully they don’t get the freshman bracket again.
Most importantly the cat trolls will be gone like a fart in the wind going to boobcat nation to bitch about whatever they deem necessary. So we can endure another day of nonsense . No worries.
Go Griz!

Zero chance of that last part happening! Since the Cats took care of business and found ways to win every FCS game they played, they're already locked in their playoff ticket and they've already locked in a top 8 seed which means we'll be enjoying Thanksgiving and getting players rested for that first home playoff game on December 3rd. So, if the griz to somehow take down the Cats Saturday, we'll still be here reminding you that if the griz don't piss down their legs, there will be Cat\griz II somewhere down the bracket. :thumb: So it's basically like a double elimination tourney, griz will have to beat the Cats twice this year to either advance... or to win it all. If that happens, I will concede the griz absolutely deserve to be there.
