Kinda figured this was coming.
But man will this screw with recruiting.

NCAA is going to have to let teams expand rosters and scholarships but the only thing would be is can we along with most of FCS even afford to do that

I think many who don’t have obvious pro aspirations will probably forgo that extra year and move on with their professional lives.

Grey shirts and non-renewed scholarships for upper classmen.

NCAA said they would get another year eligibility if you take the scholarship away from an upperclassman over something like this they have no control over it wouldn’t be fair and we’d likely see several lawsuits over it. And Greyshirts won’t work because that’s just pushing the recruit back a class and we’d never get back to having a normal recruiting class

For most FCS schools, this is the only way they will be able to make it work. A majority just are not and will not be in the position to offer more scholarships. Just because the NCAA will allow it, doesn't mean a school has to offer scholarships.

You do know a greyshirt is where a kid pays his own way and doesn’t participate in any football activities for the year, right?

If there is play in the Spring (which im already skeptical) about then I would split the 3 1/2 games players play in order to save their eligibility. Just treat it as a development year for Fall of 2021. I think the Cats are already doing that with a few of their players.

I think this decision makes it easier for a school to cancel in the Spring which I’m probably in support of at this point since they canceled Fall.

A grey shirt is just deferring enrollment until Jan. A grey shirt can participate in Spring football.

Exactly. The extra year of eligibility will probably mean little to the majority of the seniors. Just look at the softball team. Not one of this past season's seniors are listed on the 2021 roster. Despite a need for pitcher depth, Hood doesn't appear to be returning, leaving the team with just Achenbach that has extended playing experience/production. Ward pitched some last year but was inconsistent at times (like any freshman).

Football players that have already received some pro scouting attention like Toure, Akem, Lewis, Mallory, etc. would have a very good financial incentive to return.

Yes but if spring football is a season, not just a sprin game, I think then you can’t count that as a greyshirt.

This changes nothing for the freshman incoming this year, only next year. The scholarships for this year are already accounted for, so if you have freshman next year grey shirt, then you can extend scholarships for existing players through next fall and then give them to freshman enrolling the following January.

Awww, I see now. Interesting loophole. I’d think it might cause a cluster of Fr scholarships though around the ‘21 recruiting class.

Not the end of the world here. I remember the 60's and freshman athletes not allowed to play until sophomore year. A lot of what's wrong with college sports can be traced back to when freshman teams were done away with. Like then, just as now, change is hard and unpredictable.
