X-mas came early for me last Saturday. I got my wish list fulfilled as far as play calling was concerned. Deep sideline pass routes, coupled with an over the middle fly route. After looking at the replay this morning, I counted 8 deep sideline pass plays and 1 deep pass over the middle. 7 passes were incomplete, and 2 were completed which led to scores.
CC did a great job considering the reps he has had. Only one interception with a receiver falling down is quite admirable. Personally, I feel he is better suited to this offense. His scrambling ability borrowed some time for a few more completions. And his running has given us another much needed weapon.
It was great to see Logwood and Favors as well. In watching the replays, I noticed something that we have had lacking. Thus far we have relied on running backs who are quick and hopefully elude tacklers. But usually, at first contact they are down. But Favors had a couple of good runs that were negated by 2 holding calls. On the first run, he was hit twice and still got 5 extra yards. Looks like he could be a workhorse. I know it is still early, but anxious to see more of him.
The fly routes were great. Unfortunately, CC overthrew the receivers most of the time. Hard to blame him with a preseason all conference corner in Marcus Alford covering. But sometimes I think he should still put a little more air under the ball and let our taller receivers go up for it. VA made a living with the jump ball.
I am a little converned with the risk / reward ratio offered by the multiple bubble screens. We threw 14 of them. And the "total" yardage for the 14 was approx 30 yards, or about a 2 yard average. On the other hand, we throw only 4 button hook (curl) passes. These accounted for 60 yards of offense. If we are going to set the defense up with fly routes, it only makes sense that the button hook if going to be quite effective. Hopefully we will see more of the curl routes as CC and our receivers get their timing and confidence down. Both EH and JJ have awesome abilities to shake off the defenders on the curls and get extra yards. Furthermore, a "fake" curl (coupled with a little QB scrambling for time) can lead to a wide open fly route.
I see this team building now, and building fast. We need a road win this weekend, and continue to build this offense. The defense will keep us in games, but we must be ready to score 40 + in our last couple games. GREAT JOB GRIZ! GO STITT. GO GRIZ.
