Can someone please explain the difference between the pistol and shotgun formations? Asking for my grandma.

Many years ago I joined the pistol club, We would drink at stockman's til 12 and pistol 2, and were steady trying for one of those Weddings. Good Job Griz.

Took you longer to start a thread and post your question, than it did for me to look up the below.

In context|american football|lang=en terms the difference between shotgun and pistol is that shotgun is (american football) a play formation in which the quarterback is a few feet behind the snapper when the ball is hiked, ideally allowing for an easier pass play while pistol is (american football) a play formation in which the quarterback is a few feet behind the center when the ball is snapped, but closer than in a shotgun formation, with a running back a few feet behind him.

A rather simplistic explanation in coaching clinics I attended years ago is the pistol is the wing-t with the three or four yard drop back from center. The three or four yards depends on the length of the quarterback...Yada, Yada, Yada.
