Pickens

The gal who played at Mead HS in Spokane had a great early season - I don't know how that ended.

Who is the other Native American girl?

Is losing Pickens and most likely both of Shannon's daughters not the same thing? I think we are looking at a complete rebuild.

The program was in the short term shitter with or without the girls you note with the loses prior to the nonrenewal. I think it was a move that needed to be made, but the pandemic made the timing difficult to do an actual coaching search.

Probably referring to https://egriz.com/grizboard/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=85214&sid=e66d13dc11f69691f7f663fe5704dba2

Yup, that's the second one. The first is JoeNell Momberg. Here's a Jan 15 article on the sisters.

"Joelnell, a senior, scored 26 points on Tuesday – four off her season high – and sophomore point guard Kyla added two points and eight assists, many to her big sister.

They’re fitting right in on the basketball court. Joelnell averages 15.4 points, while Kyla is at 6.5, with several double-digit efforts to her credit.

“The best thing is that they’re team players,” Anderson said. “Very selfless.”

“She’s a scorer and a shooter and she just is very unselfish,” Anderson said. “She’s a complete player and it’s really fun to watch.”

Anderson said Joelnell fit right in with the tougher competition.

“She just lets the game come to her and that’s maturity and someone that just knows the game,” Anderson said.

The girls were accustomed to a dribble-drive offense at Box Elder and have been acclimating to Anderson’s motion offense.

She has a beautiful 3 point shot. https://www.hudl.com/profile/13968330/Joelnell-Momberg

She made first team all conference. Her little sister started at point guard was the team assist leader. I think the sister was only a sophomore.

I hate to see someone who is obviously such a nice kid get discouraged to the point of transferring. But, this isn't a "Sky is Falling" event. Jamie wasn't going to be a super-star in the Big Sky. She certainly wasn't a strong candidate for "Freshman of the Year" as Derrick Carter-Hollinger was for the men. I would like to wish her well but let's not refer to this as proof positive that the team has imploded. Unfortunate, yes. Disaster, no.

But, I did like her attitude and will miss her. She had the nice hands but wasn't as quick as the average Big Sky post.

This absolutely is a disaster for Lady Griz. She would have been a 2 year first team BSC player. When she was allowed to play her game, she had stretches where she absolutely dominated this year. This is very bad for your program.

Carroll is now an NAIA contender for the next 3 years. I can't believe a 2 time Gatorade player of the year is playing in the Frontier Conf. Wish she were a Cat.

Sad to see Pickens go. With Anderson, next year could have been a fun inside/outside game to watch. However, her move shows a lot of disrespect to the program she signed on to and maybe a little about her ability, character and confidence. Not trying to attack personally but trying to understand the situation. I get the loyalty to the coach that recruited her and being such close friends with that coach's family, but...she (I hope) committed to the UM Lady Griz program (not the coach) and hopefully wanted nothing other than to help that program succeed. Also, coming in with such great credentials (player of the year x 2 ) she set herself up to be a great leader and after competing at this level for a year, maybe she decided playing for the Lady Griz and D1 basketball wasn't in her comfort zone regardless of who the coach was. Seems like the path of least resistance...use coach dismissal as an excuse to get out of an uncomfortable competition and leadership situation and move way down to NAIA in her hometown where there's not as much exposure and pressure. It does seem that like all the other girls leaving, questions need to be answered. But hopefully the Lady Griz program can move forward. However, Carroll got a good one and it'll be fun to see their success in the future.

Man. There are a TON of assumptions in that post.

Maybe she just liked playing for Shannon and wanted to continue that....

Sorry, like I said just looking for answers. Maybe naive but signing on to a D1 program has to be about more than the coach. She said in the article she always wanted to be a Lady Griz, but didn't say she wanted to be one of Shannon's girls. If she wanted to be a Lady Griz then I think she'd want to make the program the best it could be regardless of the coach. Coaches change often and the athletes in the system unfortunately are forced to adjust. Changing from D1 to NAIA is such a big drop down and with her talent questions are warranted.

“I wanted to be a Lady Griz my whole life,” Pickens said. “I had a lot of goals, but after Shannon Schweyen (was not going to return) and girls leaving or wanting to leave, I didn’t think I could be able to obtain those goals. Changes were being made, and at the end of the day, I realized I need to make a change, too. I wanted to go on a new adventure.”

“I felt it all,” Pickens said about her emotions. “I was sad. I was mad. Shannon poured 32 years of heart and soul into that program, and it was hard to see that happen. I have been a close friend with her and her family my entire life. When I pictured Lady Griz basketball, I pictured playing with her as my coach. I didn’t expect it, and it hurt. I didn’t know if I could go back.”

I think what she said above indicates why she is leaving.

She’s an ESPN 100 recruit and she’s going to Carroll? Jesus they’re gonna win the national championship.

Carroll is going to be stacked if that’s the case. She could easily transfer to a P5. I think Lady Griz should be prepared for this to be a rough season unless a bunch of young players step up.

She could easily transfer to a P5? Then why didn’t she? 🙄 Do you really think a player good enough to play at a P5 women’s program 1. Would sign with UMT out of HS? or 2. Pass up a chance to transfer to one? She certainly showed a lot of promise to be a top player in the BSC but now we will never know thanks to questionable administrative decision making.

Why would you be surprised she is going to Carroll. It has a good basketball program and she is from helena and she doesn't have to sit out a year. This may not have anything to do with who is the coach. Home sweet home. Nice place to be.

With the new NCAA transfer rule she wouldn’t have to sit out a year-she play right away if she transferred to another D1,D2 D3 etc.

#1 He informs Shannon that she will be retained with a 2 year deal, then apparently changes his mind and decided to not renew. There has been much discussion on what led him to that decision, and to be honest I am not sure how much of the "players revolt" talk is in anyway accurate.

Not sure about a player's revolt, but I can confirm there were additional players that wanted to transfer when they learned Shannon was likely to be extended. I have been told there were at least 3. This was in addition to Gabi and Kylie that both were already in the transfer portal.

If Kent hadn't made the change then there wouldn't have been much of a team left. His hand was forced to save the program from a complete rebuild.

Well guess what? It’s a complete rebuild now. Bad timing to make a coaching change and Haslam clearly didn’t talk to all the players before he made his decision. Losing Pickens now creates a very big hole that has to be filled by an interim HC. Mike will work hard, but right now he’s flying plane that just lost a main engine.

This is a terrible situation for both the Lady Griz and Jamie. Jamie would have been a true star and leader for the next 3 years and now she is going to an NAIA school where she will likely dominate with much less caliber of competition. We will now never know nor will she how great she could have been with the Lady Griz plus why not go to another Div 1 school where she could truly prove how good she is. She would not have to sit out a year. For the Lady Griz we have huge losses with both graduations and transfers and from what i have read the incoming class is average at best--I hope I am wrong there. There are some decent returning players but there just aren't enough players to really be better than average. Coach Petrino is going to have his work cut out for him Final thought--we had better hope we don't play them next year, it might be a disaster

Well it can't be a case of being home sick, Helena is only 2 hours away!

Actually it is the best time to make a coaching change, but it is just too bad that a national search wasn't done.

It had everything to do with "Who is the coach" Here is the thing, they lost many girls because of the coach, but people are only pissing and moaning about the 1 that left because the HC was let go, not the many that left because she wasn't.

Has a new coach been named yet? I haven’t seen anything on the hiring process since the news come out of Shannon’s non renewal.

The Missoulian article reveals much about coach/player/team disfunction. And in my opinion one revealing thread in Pickens interview is her "friendship", with the coach of whom in her opinion was "wronged" for her dismissal. Interestingly enough, she will be going to Carroll where she will play for her "friends-friend". Pickens also reveals disfunction among individual players, of whom appeared only to be in it for themselves. Other data among many of the threads indicate players wanted to and have left the program because of the coach. Key is the role of the coach and the ultimate responsibility to hold firm professional boundaries with players, not their friend, not being differential in on/off court relationships with players, fair/firm in all aspects of coaching intervention. And most certainly a primary role model for these young adults, UM, supporters and fans. I now think coach removal should have been made much sooner than what has transpired. Hopefully lessons learned!
