Phil Buck Leaving

Clock management is one of the most intriguing and exciting parts of the game especially in the final two minutes of the halves.
Yup, and quite possibly cost us a third national championship last year.

BTW actual playing time in American football is less than ELEVEN MINUTES. No wonder there is so much drinking going on.
There certainly is a lot "dead time" in a game when you count timeouts of the various kinds. However, I saw that study, and some of the ones done in the past, and found their methodology a bit bogus. Seems like they wanted to prove a point ... and (surprise!) did. They don't give a lot of detail of how they did the study, but you can figure it out.

Do the math -- An NFL games averages about 125 plays between the two teams:
So 125 x (5.3 sec/play)/(60 sec/min) = 11 min. It's pretty clear that their definition of "action" only counts the span from when the ball is snapped until the whistle blows to end the play. Pretty quick. Fair enough, if that's your definition.

But in reality, there's a hell of a lot of action going on outside that span ... motion by the offense, reaction by the defense, fake stunts, trying to beat the count, etc. Plus there's a lot of mental action -- anticipation -- that even ordinary fans can appreciate. So snap-to-whistle is only relevant if you've set out to "prove" that there's not much action in American football.

BTW: I haven't seen any recent numbers, but games between college teams used to average 15-30 more plays than the NFL. Is it any wonder some of us prefer the college game?

Yes, & one of those timeouts is "freezing" the kicker at the end of a close game. Jesus, how that drags on. Oh, I know, a perfect time to ask your seat mate how his fishing trip, whatever, went, as if you haven't gone into his/her life enough, already. Is a UM football game for the socializing or for the game? As for Hammer, it's for the drinking/socializing. "Oh, there is a football game. Damn!"

I'm not sure a running clock would change anything that much. I think it would change the game enough to keep people interested in the game more than in their social needs. This clock manipulation or "playing by the clock" is stupid. Yes, it's an element but completely irrelevant to good football, imo. Yes, the last 2 minutes of every half are exciting, but why is that? IT'S BECAUSE THE CLOCK IS RUNNING!

Frequent timeouts, quarter breaks, halftime breaks, etc., give advertisers time to sell their products on TV. But, THEY MAKE THE GAME BORING! Why not do like soccer? Have a 60 or 70 minute half? No quarter breaks. Basketball does it, why not football? Field position changes only at the half. I'm sure that a lot of timeout activity would cease with a running clock. The total time for a game could be two hours or a little more, instead of three hours, an hour of that sheer boredom. Injury timeouts? Build them into the total time allowed.

I never watched a complete soccer game until the World Cup. A lot of what they do makes sense to me for American football, which I do enjoy despite the issues I have with it. I just think I could enjoy it more.

then why go to a game?! if it's so miserable to sit through, and you just want it to be over than what is the point? it's sports for the love of god! it's not like getting teeth pulled. sure if i was in the dentists office against my will and it wook three hours i'd be annoyed. but we're talking about sports. and you guys are lucky to have one of the best venues to watch a game! what, you want the game to hurry up and end so you can go shovel snow? read the paper? watch tv? no one is forcing you to go to a game. you are supposed to do it because it's fun, and entertaining. not because it's what everyone else is doing and you wanna be part of the crowd. same goes with baseball. i'm so tired of people talking about how long the games are. it's fun! shouldn't we wish the games would go longer? for my money it doesn't get much better than sittin in the sun, eating a hotdog and drinking a cold beer watching guys play ball. maybe your life is far, far, far better than mine because when i go to a game, i could sit there and watch all day. especially when my wife and kids are along. what the hell would i rather be doing.

iltc: Are you sure we can't do a two for one, David2 and IdaGriz01 for you? Hell I'd even toss in a few more supposed "Griz football fans" (ones who don't actually seem to like the Griz or even football) if we could just turn you from the dark side. Your presence here raises the average IQ of the board by at least a few points all by yourself. Go into the light...

I was going to suggest a return of Whisperin' Dave Tester except he may still be hauling too much baggage with a 2008 domestic abuse arrest...Actually, he was never really one of my favorite PBP guys, but it would be novel to have a media person instead of a player or coach having a brush with the law.

DT would fit right in since hes used to sexual harassment, beating up his wife and getting DUI's. You guys would have a new guy to make excuses for!!

I say get him!!

ha, probably not. if i would have moved to missoula instead of bozeman 20 plus years ago than probably. i love the cats but i have a healthy respect for the griz. also never really got off on being a tough guy or a tool on a message board. i try to say the same type of crap on these boards as i would if i was in a bar with you guys. and i'm only about 5'10 180 so i'd watch what i said in a bar! i just can't for the life of me figure out why people would complain about the length of SPORTS! especially when it's no secret you guys have maybe the best gameday experience of any fcs school. ya...let's hurry up and get all that over with and join the wife at bed bath and beyond...

Never in my life have I felt a football game was "too long." And, there have been some that weren't long enough ... for my team to pull out the win. Who'd want to mess with a system that works pretty darned well.

I agree, it's the sport (for the love of god). It's about watching good football. Watching the Griz struggle & then overcoming adversity to win. I do not believe you & your family will be much deprived if Griz games were 2 hours. Maybe you're the one who has to go home and shovel snow, etc., if games were an hour shorter. Even baseball had to tighten up on pitchers who'd take many minutes staring at the clouds, the birds, kicking the mound, etc., before delivering a pitch. I suppose even batters stepping out of the box for this & that. Baseball does not have a clock, but still there was pressure to speed it up.

Football games like any sporting event are good times for fans to socialize with each other. It's as much a part of the sport as the game, itself. I'll admit that when I go to a game or watch it on TV, visiting with a seatmate or watching with a group of friends adds a lot. BUT I'M THERE FOR THE GAME! And, I'm upset that I don't see as much of the game as I'd like, due to all the intermidable delays for one reason or another. I'll admit I may not be the best fan, but I'm tired of that crap. This isn't just the Griz games. It's the NFL, etc.

As long as fans like you attend and pay, and as long as fans of the NFL love to watch TV football, nothing will change. I'm just registering my opinion of the situation, and you are entitled to oppose it. It's just that we watch football for different reasons, and I do enjoy the ambience of a home Griz game. I just think I'd enjoy it just as much with a running clock.

I'm not sure what your point is in lumping me in with D2. Check my post: While I said there was a lot of so-called dead time (which there is), I NEVER used the word "boring."

As far as I'm concerned, studies that purport to show how little action there is in football are basically cheating (to make a point, I guess). Counting only snap-to-whistle as the only "action" ignores what's goes on during the snap count.

And sure, timeouts can be a pain (especially "TV" timeouts). But time in the huddle gives us (the fans) a moment to savor a great play, bitch about that last really stupid play call (and/or the refs), and anticipate/pontificate about what's going to happen next. There may not be much "action" on the field, but there's plenty in the stands. (Even without drinking, having a pizza, or talking about your last fishing trip or whatever.)

So leave me out of bitches about "boring" football -- I love the game experience, even with its supposed imperfections.

A "MODERATOR" goes off topic. Typical for eGriz.

Well in case you missed it genius, this thread (including your ramblings) have been off topic, i.e. "Phil Buck Leaving". for a while. Just because you aren't a moderator (thank the good Lord for somethings) doesn't except you from haaving a lack of attention span -- which clearly is an issue if you can't deal with "all of the interruptions" at football games.

As long as we are off topic... The running clock is one reason the hooligans roll up a newspaper, point it at the ground, and insert winkie as to not soil the also inebriated idiot in front of him -- either that or get an Olver Twist in the Chevy Chase. The poor sods don't want to miss the non-stop excitement that is English football. And who could possibly blame them?

Sorry, nothing personal. I was just trying to sweeten the pot a bit. At least your post made some sense (even if I don't necessarily see the point of dissecting the game that way if you simply enjoy it for what it is -- pretty much perfect in my mind). Your post at least made some sense and I was pretty sure no one would go for a simple one for one for D2. Still the two for one didn't work either. Much more work to be done...

Hey, sitting here at my computer I can make it sound great ... like I'm really "dissecting" the action when I'm in the stands. When I'm there, I'm screaming, jumping up and down, high-fiving, and all the usual craziness. BTW, let's not complain too much about timeouts. Without them, I wouldn't have any voice left at the end of a really exciting game.

No, I didn't miss it. It got off topic with this:

"Re: Phil Buck Leaving
Post by Big One 25 » Tue Jul 20, 2010 5:18 pm
Phil was good, and hung on Bobby's nuts more than David and all his brothers. I would say he is one of the best they have had in some time. Hopefully somebody steps up their game and takes his place."

Then, Hammer, The Bud, et al. chimed in. Yeah, my bad for responding to this playground sh!t. I'd apologize to the OP and Phil, but those guys should be apologizing. This is not the only thread they've hijacked in attacking me.

If I could hire the ideal broadcast team to call Griz games for KPAX, it would be Mick, Gurns, and Pam Ward!

Fu*k you David2! You are a condescending old prick. In my post I stated "the game is the highlight for me". Can't you read? Yes I love enjoying a cold beer on gameday and visiting with friends, maybe you should try it, you wouldn't get so bored on gameday! But I take offense to your claim that I am there for drinking. I have been at every home game except two (conflicts with my sons HS football games), playoffs included, since 2000 and have never left the stadium until after the team comes over and sings the fight song. If I was there for drinking don't you think that I would have headed for the tailgates in the 2nd half of all the blowouts? Football is my priority, I supplement it with tailgating before and after the game. And I am NEVER bored at the games, in fact I usually hate to see them end I enjoy them so much.

If you came off your high horse maybe you wouldn't be considered such a retard by 99% of the posters on this board.
