Perspectives on Grizzly Football

I'm sure Hammer was referring to your choice of music/culture, as defined in the Urban Dictionary, #7:

7. punk 341 up, 102 down

Originally, jail lingo for a subservient, cuckolded inmate indebted to another for protection and in return obliged to perform favors both of a sexual nature and otherwise.
The term came to refer to the music and culture described above as young musicians and people in the late 70's and early eighties felt alienated by the incorporation of formerly anti-estaplishment hippie culture.

Besides, Hammer doesn't sound like an old hippie.

Oh, yes. You better watch out.

I'm so terrified
You should be.

I'm not afraid of an old man with a beer belly. Just sayin'.

I'm around at every game, not hard to find. I'm not afraid of a punkassed pothead who probably doesn't even have a job, either.

Awesome. Tailgate entertainment. I hope Alpha brings his camera. I got $20 bucks on Hammer.

Good old fashioned donnybrook. Haven't seen one of those in a while. My money is on the Butte plumber who uses a hammer.

Actually I do have a job and I don't live anywhere near Missoula. You must not have one since you go to every game.

......This post is not about me, but all of you. Book 2 coming out soon....all about lessons from eGriz. Don't worry, you won't be in it- keeping it 100% positive to try to repair the terrible image you and a few others have bestowed upon your fellow posters.

I recently read GG's first book and want to express my thoughts about it. My thoughts and opinions are based on 25+ years of editing experience (college and law school textbooks, legal treatises, novels (both fiction and nonfiction,) newspaper and magazine articles, technical manuals (especially back in the day when you got a fat printed software manual along with your new software,) doctoral dissertations, masters theses and lots of other miscellaneous written material.) Professionally speaking, I thought the book was well written with a palpable melodic flow to it. GG has a compelling conversational style and concomitant command of the English language. For me, the gist of the book was not an in depth analysis of Griz football, but a gripping account of how her football learning curve had a parallel affect on her personal growth and perspectives. In short, it was a really enjoyable read. I love books. I love how they look, how they feel, how they smell and how they sound when you turn the pages -- I own over 11,000 of them and I am proud to have GG's book in my collection.

On a personal basis, the book was even more striking because it mirrored some of my life experiences as well. When I came to Missoula, I pretty much lived inside my own shell; one of those people who lived apart from, instead of as a part of, the typical social interactions. Life at UM and becoming a Griz helped change that for me, and as such, I could relate fully to the growth process that GG found through her discovery of what it means to be a Griz. And any time you put yourself in front of the public (i.e. as in authoring a book) you are exposing yourself in a sense and such an act takes balls. I'm glad she had the balls to speak her mind through the book.

And now for the disclaimer -- I don't know GG personally. The extent of our acquaintance is the passing of 3 or 4 PMs. She never asked me to offer my opinions about the book. I did so because I appreciate her perspectives on Grizzly football.

First, Happy Thanksgiving to each and every one of you! Getting involved in various conversations on eGriz has been fun, enlightening and....educational at times. The meanest of the mean people on here suggest that football conversations should be exclusive to men, that I am "stupid" or simply like to categorize people by race, gender, or whatever stereotype fits the conversation. I'm ok with that. Those conversations teach me just as much as civilized ones do.

As for Grizzly Football - you are right. I am naive about a lot of things. Never played, have never been coached at the game and grew up in a home where nobody watched football. When I began attending Griz Games in 2000, I didn't know what "downs" were, what yellow flags meant or the names of any of the positions. I was a blank slate, when it came to football. But the atmosphere at WaGriz and the experiences of that first season (including learning the ins and outs of football) made such an impression that I wrote a book about falling in love with this team and all of the metaphors between football and life. This post is not about the book, it is about what drove me to write it.

Life, like football, is about accepting unexpected losses, working together and relying on each other, celebrating wins and successes with humility and, sometimes, knowing when to take a knee or when to go for it on fourth.

Today, I am thankful for all of you eGrizzers who have allowed me into this next phase of my football education - discussing the details, trading the occasional smack-talk and learning varying attitudes and perspectives of other passionate fans. I am especially thankful for those of you who see value in my perspective and appreciate it for what it is.

Happy Thanksgiving!

In 2000 at that very first game, you where actually 2 steps ahead of the Player Rep. at least and foremost of tolerance of others point of view, which he is not capable of.

When can we get dub fonzy back? I really miss those days.

Holy french toast batman. One of the more entertaining threads I have read on egriz with input from so many different posters. GG - I enjoy reading your posts and I could care less that you are a female who never played the game. I know plenty who did (including myself and I was awesome - just ask me) that don't know squat about the game. I also believe that it is football - not f"ing" rocket science. I love the fact you enjoy the game for the right reasons. As for this thread, So many a$$hats and little time to read all of your posts. What to do? I know - I will be a bigger a$$hat and post myself. Slam away!

It seems I remember a couple of other names that used to post a lot....wasn't there a "djollieballs" or something? And "ronbo"? Where did they go? Are they posting under new names? Were they, in fact, a$$hats, or were they ok?

djollieballs, aka dub foncy got called out somehow by BW, and has not returned. No idea about Ronbo, I did not mind him though.

The biggest issue with GGNez is she knows more about Grizzly football than 90% of the men posters on here and they don't like it. I think it's great to have a womens view (heck I voted for Hillary over Obama in the primary election), I am reading her book now and my wife and I can relate to it in so many ways as she became "one of us" just like my wife did. Like Copper said it's not rocket science and yes she enjoys the game for the right reasons. I think it's awesome that she posts here!!
