Penalties

Strahm is a walking 15 yard penalty.....

Most intimidating, smack-talking, physical player on ST and defense - the guy made all an all-conference team for his special teams play.

Needs to find a balance though, plays beyond the echo of the whistle and it seems the refs were looking for him today. I love the way he plays, he's going to be the badass enforcer in the middle of the field next season.

I think he can be all that and still be smart though. Grizindabox is spot on, this kid gets a personal foul or two a game. At some point, you've got to be smart.

For the first 20 minutes of the second half it appeared we showed up simply ONLY to commit penalties.

Everything but the holding penalty was boneheaded. Stitt needs to get that fixed.

We were one of the least penalized teams in the BSC. I don't think there's anything to "fix".

But today they were penalized way more than you would expect and far above their average. I feel like that sh*t should be cleaned up in the playoffs, rather than exacerbated.

MSU--13-120
EWU--10-72
ISU--6-67
PSU--5-32
UND--2-12
WSU--3-25
UCD--3-33
NAU--8-60
LU--10-66
Poly--3-20
NDSU--5-40

That averages out to just under 50 ypg. Even the "chippy rivalry" game was less penalized. Seriously AZ that sh*t will kill you in the playoffs. We were lucky to escape. Several key drives were killed.

So there is something to "fix" IMO.

Although I agree this needs to be fixed for next week, I do really like the chippy play. Do it within the rules but keep the edge!

"Were" sums it up alright. Past performance... future results comes to mind. And if I missed a PI call in that group, I would lump that in with the holding call. Good teams don't beat themselves. As for Strahm, I wish he'd be more like KVA on the field. Enforcers are for hockey.

Four defensive offside penalties, at least two on Holmes. When was the last time you saw a game with 4 offsides penalties called? And they were all called by the same official as well. It is almost as if it was pointed out to him prior to the game that they may line up too close and he just fixated on it. It is unfortunate that a ref can focus so much on that but basically let holding go every play.

I don't mind the personal fouls, as long as they're not too flagrant or dirty (which they weren't, in my view). If you want defenders to play hard-nosed football, you can't get upset if they occasionally step slightly over the line.

The one that did bother me was the unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for taunting right before the half. That one serves no good purpose.

Taunting is just plain stupid and costly. Nelson could have been flagged for one of those also in the first half when he did the "slash your throat" gesture after a pass break up. We have to clean these up.

The offside penalty on 4th down directly cost a TD. The 30 yards of penalties happened when we were well within FG range - cost probably at least 3 points. Without those, the game isn't even close.

Anyone know which conference these officials were from?

Big South, I believe. The Umpire did the UM/Liberty game.

Holmes was lined up off sides in his 2d off sides call. I had a good view. Saw it ahead of time. Immediately glanced at the ref, and saw him pull his flag. It seemed that Stitt didn't like the call, or something, as he was jawing with the ref.

There was no reason to hit the punt returner, who was away from the ball, after the first UM punt. Seemed like a total mistake.

Espn has it as a holding and a personal foul on reese and luke. Seems like during the game it was on the same player

Originally the announcers were going on and on about Reese. But the 2nd (PF) penalty was on Luke, not Reese. I can live with the holding call. Not Luke's dumb Personal Foul.

I saw only the end of the Reese play. He had driven his defender outside to the left and way way back, like 10 yards, and taken him to the ground. I saw only the ground part. The play had gone to the right. I don't know how Luke was engaged. Sometimes it's hard to disengage immediately, and they may both have been losing balance towards the end of the play. It didn't seem to have occurred way after the play, just at the end or shortly after. If it hadn't been so far away from the play, I wonder if it would have been called. I wonder if the ref saw the whole play, or just the tail end of it.

Watch that again. He actually swiped across the Montana on his jersey. That said, still not smart as an official may see it as you did.

The unsportsmanlikes were terrible though.

Need a ruling on this. Griz punt, the ball hits the ground and begins to roll, receiving player makes a
Half-hearted move towards the ball and is hit by Strahm. So what, whistle hadn't blown, receiver indicates he wants to play.
After it hits the ground we don't have to let him field it. Later in the game, our punt hits the ground and begins to roll, receiver gives up on rolling ball but comes up and gives one of the Griz a shot to prevent us from downing it deep in their end. I don't see a penalty in either situation.

129 in penalties is bad but like others posted, I don't mind Strahm's nearly as much as other ones that cost the Griz points. Strahm's two PF calls didn't result in any points surrendered.

Reese's holding and then Luke's personal foul took at least 3 points off the board, Griz went from the SDSU 20 to the SDSU 44.

Two TD drives of SDSU's an off-sides call made the difference, earlier on Holmes when a 3rd and 10 was batted down, but SDSU given a 2nd chance picked it up. Then another on Strahm when blitzing when a 4th and 8 was incomplete but then SDSU got another shot and picket it up.

Eric Johnson's somewhat questionable call for PI on a high throw also extended a drive but SDSU didn't score on that one.

So we should'nt discourage PF calls that don't result in points for the other team? And we know this how? Stitt said it best @ the presser, what if that call was the one that cost them a game. Aggressive play doesn't have to be boneheaded.

Some personal fouls from being aggressive may be okay, but PF's from being stupid, like late hits or hitting guys away from the play are not.
