Patience Please

For those that are down on Tinkle, have patience. I found it interesting that our 2 most successful former Griz coaches, Heathcote and Montgomery struggled their 1st year. Yet look what they accomplished in their respected careers! Very impressive careers. Hell, Jud's 1st 2 years were average. I have complete faith in Tinkle. It is very common for 1st year head coaches to struggle, especially when SR leadership has not been there. Let's give Wayne time, rather than bash him, support him and let time take it's course.

With today's expectations, many would have written off Heatcote and Montgomery. How foolish would have they made many look? If I recall correctly LK also started off slowly, and got it together the 2nd half season. If memory serves me correct LK started conference play 3 and 3. Guess what? If we beat Weber State this weekend, WT also starts out conference 3 and 3. Let's relax Griznation. :thumb: We will be fine.

I am not down on Tinkle. I just think the Griz didn't execute the gameplan, fell in love with the 3 point line and flat got it taken to them by a team that made the Griz play into their hands. That can't all go on Tinks, and it can't all go on the players, but the Griz got beat in all facets tonight. I think they will bounce back hard Saturday night. I am a Griz no matter what, but I am still going to point out things I saw, without getting personal with coaches or players.

i try not to get personal but i can't stand to see a team so talented struggle so much. it makes me sick to watch these guys go out and play like they don't give a shit. it's ridiculous.

Actually, based on the information provided, most of our first year coaches did VERY WELL. Brandenburg's record is skewed because of a player being declared ineligible after the season was completed and the Griz had to forfeit 10+ games. Only Holst and Kennedy really struggled...

No, I'm not patient on this one. And, I'm not bitching about Tinkle here. The players need to start playing. They present themselves as an undisciplined, stupid team. I'm not sure you can teach stupid or selfish players...I hope I'm proven wrong-

If it were back in the old days with Jud and Mike, the fans would have got on the Griz a lot more, instead of pure silence. Many of the teams during Heathcote, brandenburg, and Montgomery's time period fed off the energy of the fans, not the other way around like it is now.

Today, it was like playing on the road for the Griz. Even when they went on a 15 - 5 run, it was pretty much silent in the gym, very little energy coming from the fans. Yeah, this was just another road game for the Griz today, at least from the feel of it. If this continues, expect attendance to start falling.

But, hey, Check out the Lady Griz. They are hot and deserve the attention. Even in a so-so game they win with 90 points. I mean, 13 for 24 from the freethrow line? Unheard of. 5 of 17 from 3 point line? God that is awful. But, they still get 90 points. At least something is working well at Montana.

Tough to have paitience with the amount of talent we have. Tinks better start to lay into these guys when they play, the players should want that push too.

I saw Most all of the games when Jud, Brandy and Monty were coaching. Keep in mind basketball was king then so the atmosphere was better. The students were where they should be, courtside, the stupid media tables were not providing a buffer zone either. Jud also woul ddo thinks like throw his sportcoat on the floor, stomp around, throw his watch in the stands. The crowd ate it up and he intimidated the Refs. Brandenburg was a great coach, his record is deceiving because of the Lee Johnson situation in whihc the Griz forfeited a lot of wins. Monty also did a good job, but he became a much better coach later on.

As for the Lady Griz, don't let those percentages you cite fool you. The LG lead the nation in 3 point shooting and lead the league in FT shooting. They also blew a 21 point lead to a pretty good ISU team, but found a way to win.

The students need to get this going but I don't see it happening without a couple wins first. Football is king and i hate it. I do. Sure they bring in the money but who is the biggest challenger on their level??? appalachian state! i'm a huge sports fan and i don't even know where the hell that is. The griz play I-A teams and if you go off how far they made it in the tourney last year they were one of the best 32 teams in the nation. 32!! all the teams, not the I-AA ones. all of em! ahhhh, this is frustrating.

  Glad I was not the only one noticing the lack of fan enthusiasm, even when the GRIZ were playing well.

I agree. The crowd was not into the game.

I hope Dennison is making the University a LOT of money with this intersession, because it is killing the basketball attendance.

Quick question for everyone. I follow the basketball team as much as possible (difficult being 180 miles away). Being that Wayne has never been a head coach anywhere before and only an assistant with Montana, why would he then be qualified to be the head coach of a Division I basketball team? No disrespect to Wayne but from the beginning I have wondered this. Just because he is an alum and had been an assistant for some time does not mean he is the right guy for the head job. Too bad we couldn't have gotten someone like O'Brien from Idaho State, with his experience and abilities, I think ISU is going to be tough in years to come. You could just see the difference in last nights game. Out hustled, out played, and outcoached. Wayne sure seems to blame the players a lot. Hopefully he can right the ship soon, there was a lot of excitement after last years team but it appears as if that excitement is gone again.

He has all of the qualifications, past player (a good one at that), and many years as the assistant head coach with Kennedy and Coach K. He knows the game and he's proven that he can land some good recruits.

I do not have as many concerns of Tinkle not having any head coaching experience before this considering the amount of experience with coaching Basketball that he has.

My concern here is O'Day offering a three year contract to a coach with no head coaching experience.
Naturally, Tinkle would go for that with no questions asked.
If he fails, UM will likely have to pay off a part of the rest of the contract.

Thats a good question, but if you look at the great griz coaches they have come from within. I think we lost our guy with Huse, we are going to get sick of him in the coming years. I wanted Huse from the get go and watched him and Tinkle both coaching in the Cat/Griz game, Huse had control and intensity while Tinkle well looked confused.

I think at some point Tinkle needs to get an assistant who takes the head coaching roll of getting on guys and drawing up plays. Tinks needs to sit back and be the face of our program, this would be a blow to the ego but we need a coach not a fan.

my biggest disappointment with "Tinks", is the lack of discipline. I don't think he has the ability to really get on a kid when the gameplan is not being followed or a bad pass being thrown. With Krysko, it seemed like the players concentrated more for they knew that mistakes would not be allowed under any circumstances. I don't see that with Tinkle. He has spent these years being the buffer, as most assistants in basketball are. Now he has to be the person that the player needs a buffer between and I don't know if he and/or the kids can make that distinction. :twocents:
