Participation, The Ref, and Diagnosing a Play

Looked like all the usual suspects made the trip to Terra Haute. Almost everybody who dressed got into the game; shout outs to Kellen Detrick and Robert Whitehead on the first live snaps of their Griz careers.

Daniel Britt, Camden Ver Strate (I think ????) Michael Matthews (injury/sick/something else?), Kevin Good (unless he played convert team), and Declan McCabe were the only guys in uniform who didn't get in.

It looked like Gabe Longin, Camden Capser, AJ Abbott, the Lang Brothers, Andrew Travillion, Tanner Huff, Geno Leonard, Asher Croy, Jace Klucewich, Cooper Barnum, Wyatt Wegener, Zac Evans, Alex Hurlburt, Corby Mann, Matt Rensvold, Sloan McPherson, and Dylan Smith were the lads who were dressed for the two home games so far but didn't make the trip.

The REF; had the longest legs to total body length I think I've ever seen! He looked like he could have stepped over the cross bar on the goal post like Aaron Fontes hurdling a Sycamore defender.

As many can probably figure out, I love trying to dissect and break down plays and I know there are others on here who like doing that as well. Since last week, we looked at a negative play and it caused negative vibes, I thought this week we could look at a play that worked well for the GRIZ. Does anybody have a play that stood out, that we could kick around ideas about? Any mention of a GRIZ player will only be in regards to that specific play regardless of my sloppy grammar.
 
Nothing of substance to add here, but wanted to thank you for being awesome, Sask. Not just in this moment (which is pretty awesome), but in general. Carry on, and don't change a thing...

Okay, the Wheel route to Grossman for the third TD. This is what I saw, love to hear what others think of the play.

Third and Six

GRIZ – 21 Personnel, Shot gun, 2 wides split and on the line. Don't know what you call this formation where Harris is right behind the right guard and so tight to the line that he’s almost parallel with Grossman who is in the traditional TE split on the boundary side. Kind of looks like some of the old time power formations, but I don't know.

Sycamores – 4-2-5 pre-snap, like they want to play cover 2, but when they react to the formation pre-snap and walk the boundary safety into a Sam LB look while the FS moves over the top to cover the vacated spot. It ends up looking like a 4-4-3 at the snap.

On the snap;
a. Johnson meshs with Knight but if there was an actual read there, it would be that all four second row defenders are five yards deep and an inside run for a first down is going to be tough sledding.
b. Knight carries his run to the play side perfectly and freezes the Mike, Will and the 5th DB who is reading Knight. The lone safety also actually takes a step or two to the play side as well.
c. Flowers runs a deep corner and carries his CB a mile from where the play is going. Simpson is running a deep slant which clears his corner out of that side.
d. Grossman releases and the safety who had walked up pre snap must have thought he was running a little slant to the sideline because he takes a very poor angle and as soon as Grossman wheels up field the defender is in a trail position and it’s “Good Night Nurse”
e. Harris also came left across the formation on the snap, running behind the line of scrimmage and then flaring out into the boundary flat, the DE on that side was unblocked but caught in no man’s land by the move and the MIKE linebacker had to try to get over to Harris. Who it turns out is not needed but would have been open for a check down if Grossman wasn’t open.

Least not let us forget that the pass was right there, in stride, a CB's worst dream 6'5" 240 coming at you. (and he doesn't like you).
