To go with the FCS-FBS polls that presented specific matchups for possible, I thought I'd post something where you don't have to pick who might pull an upset ... just how many, in general.

Some background: Last season, there were only 18 opening-"weekend" FCS-FBS games. None turned out to be upsets.

In 2015, there were (again) 46 such games. That year, there were two upsets, one being the win by NDSU over Iowa State. The other was Bethune-Cookman over Florida International.

So you might say: "What's the point?

Well, in 2013, the season opened with 32 FCS-FBS matchups. That year, there were eight upsets (that's one-in-four, for those not so good at math), one being NDSU over Kansas State. Others were Northern Iowa over Iowa State and McNeese over South Florida. So there is a precedent for a fair number of upsets during that opening period.

For obvious reasons, you're only allowed one vote ... but you are allowed to change it later.

Like the congressional democrats when the sledding under a Republican got tough in Iraq.

Had a moment, so I went back one more year, to 2012. That year the opening “weekend” had 38 FCS versus FBS games. There were five upsets among those games, include EWU winning at U-Idaho (20-3) on a Thursday night. Also, on Saturday, Youngstown State decisively beat Pittsburgh (31-17). Besides the five actual upsets, I also noticed that Florida Atlantic won over powerhouse (NOT!) Wagner by just 7-3. And … Maryland squeaked one out over William & Mary 7-6. In that one, the Terrapins needed a late TD after W&M held the lead for most of the game on 2 FGs.

Just to add more data, I went back to 2011 for another bump. During the first weekend, there were 35 FCS-FBS matchup, but only two upsets: Sacramento State beat Oregon State in OT, and Richmond beat Duke. However, there were also three close calls where the FCS team lost by only a FG: EWU at Washington, Eastern Kentucky at Kansas State, and Weber State at Wyoming.

Nine wins for the full season looks decent ... anybody know how many FCS-FBS games there were in 2015?

Well, we've at least eliminated the "None" option ... with Albany's win. With over 30 FCS-FBS games today, all of the other choices are within reach. And, BTW, those of you who voted "None" might think about changing your vote. :)

Looks like the poll got the right number. What I find is four: Albany over Buffalo, Richmond over Virginia, EWU over WSU and UNI over Iowa State. There were some close calls, but that's all I found. Of course, there one more (very) small chance tomorrow when Hampton plays Old Dominion. (Strange to have college football on Sunday.)

Aside from Albany, I would have consisted these about the most likely upsets.
