Cal Poly game. Should have punted the dang ball on 4th down and 1:18 left when they only needed a field goal to win the game but had no time outs. Yes we were on the 32 yard line but again, they only needed field goal to win, if we punted that extra 12 to 25 yards would have been the difference. Especially based on the fact that Counts was out and he felt he had to use Gamboa as out short yardage back.

Then on top of it he called time out and for whatever reason kept them in the timeout way to long (ref started the play clock while the offense was standing on the sidelines) to the point where Gus thought the play clock was running out, panicked and snapped the ball early which messed up the whole play.

In the Weber game I did not have a problem with going for it on 4th down. My problem was that we were in short yardage on 3rd down both times (3rd and 2 yards to go both freekin times) and both times we threw the ball on both 3rd and 4th down with our 3rd string quarterback who had not taken 1st team reps that week. That was plain stupid.

Why not? Part of coaching is getting people "up" and ready for games, work, etc. as a General Sales Manager teaching people who to sell isn't the hard part. What is hard is the psychology of getting people to execute. If my team doesn't execute it is on me. If a coach/manager doesn't follow that belief it is time for a new coach.

Getting players "up" suggests raising their emotional levels. I've heard many RAH, RAH speeches from coaches using the same old cliches of "Keep, fighting", "We don't quit", "Go out and hit somebody" which is fine and serves a purpose for some players. An effective coach will provide INFORMATION to a player that will help him improve his performance and clarify his responsibilities. He'll also provide dis-incentives for players who fail to execute. Very noble to accept responsibility for someone elses performance, but maybe replacing him with someone more responsive is a better way.
