Our Offense and the Big Picture

1st rule of ball control football: build a big lead, then shorten the game. Can't shorten the game with incomplete passes.
The best way to shorten the game is to keep getting 1st downs to keep possession of the ball. Runs up the middle on 3rd and 6 are not the best bets to do that.

We did that, you're correct. ONCE.

Third down plays in the 2nd half:

3rd &12, JJ pass complete to Josh Janssen for 24 yards
3rd & 7, JJ pass incomplete to Jamaal Jones
3rd & 4, JJ rush for 5 yards (1st down)
3rd & 10, JJ pass complete to Jamaal Jones for 25 yards
3rd & 3, JJ pass incomplete to Jamaal Jones
3rd & 7, Logwood rush for 3 yards
3rd & 4, Favors rush for no gain

So, 7 3rd down plays in the 2nd half, play selection was 4 passes & 3 runs. 2 of the 3 3rd downs on which we ran the ball we needed 4 yards. And I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess (without re-watching the play) that JJ's 5 yard run on 3rd & 4 was actually a scramble that started out as a pass play. That would mean that for all but the last two possessions we actually called pass plays on 3rd down, not running plays.

If rushing the ball on 3rd & 4 isn't an acceptable option for eGriz offensive gurus at least SOME of the time, we should probably all just apply to be the OC.

After reading perhaps the worst thread in the history of Egriz (Time to Clean House), I want to offer a wider view of our offense. I'll preface by saying that I don't get to many games. But, I am a passionate Griz fan, and I follow closely. I don't sleep well when they lose. I fondly remember sitting in the stands in the early 90s watching a fast-paced brand of football. It was exciting watching the play develop, seeing the receiver come uncovered, willing the qb to see him....and explode with fanatical excitement as they scored. That was fun. But, I also know as a general rule....to advance deep into the playoffs a team must be able to run the football and play superb defense. The playoffs require tough football, which is not the same as finesse football. I think our coaching staff knows this...and we don't give them enough credit for understanding the bigger picture. Finesse is fun, no doubt. Tough wins in the playoffs. Our coaches and play-calling can improve without question, but I like what they are doing with respect to the program wit large. Everyone cheer up for crying out loud - it is football season after all.

this post makes sense......if we get the o/l working better, and we keep winning, all this will make sense to lots more people......

...not the 2 thousand season ticket holders that own seats from 20-20 and don't show up if it drops below 50.

Now that I agree with wholeheartedly. Made same trip last December to see CC game.

Wouldn't you think every season ticketholder would have wanted to experience what a game at Lambeau field in January feels like.
