On another thread, '68 asked me what I did not like about our new uniforms.
This is so critical, these uniforms so manifestly ABSURD, they deserve their own thread.
What is the purpose of a uniform?
TO PROMOTE YOUR BRAND.
All pro teams do this. Think “Lakers.” In your mind’s eye, can you see “Lakers” on their uniforms? Of course you can. Or “Dodgers.” Yes, again.
Back in the days when the Warriors played in San Francisco, this was their logo: “The City.” (With a cable car for good measure.) My handle here is a corrupted version (thanks to Argh!) of “The City.” In the Bay Area, that look is unmistakable. Classic. The Warriors may even revive that logo when they move back to “The City” in a few years.
This is what teams do. As the MOST VISUAL representation of a team, this is what UNIFORMS do.
THEY PROMOTE YOUR BRAND!
But what is the most prominent feature of our new uni’s?
A number!
A NUMBER IS NOT A BRAND!!
When we stand up to sing our school fight song, do we sing, “Up with NUMBER 14 boys, down with the foe!”?
Or up “Up with NUMBER 2 boys, down with the foe!!”?
Do we sing, “Up with NIKE boys, down with the foe!”?
Do we even sing, “UP WITH THE GRIZ BOYS, DOWN WITH THE FOE!”
No. We sing “Up with MONTANA…”
MONTANA!!
MONTANA!! The only school in the country with a mountain on its campus! The school we love. The school that fills us with emotion when we sing the fight song!
That is our university; that is our brand. That’s what’s unique about us. Not a number. Not Nike. Not even “The Griz,” because many other teams are nicknamed the Grizzlies.
But nobody else is MONTANA.
As in, “Up with MONTANA boys…..
That is our brand. And our uniforms should proclaim that, loudly and proudly.
These uniforms look like practice uniforms. They are an abomination!
Whoever approved these uniforms should be embarrassed.
Actually, they should be fired.
And that’s why I hate these uniforms.
