Oregon State names Tinkle new head coach

terrible price to pay, but this elevates our program nationally. makes us a springboard for up-and-coming young coaches.

you listening, travis?

next issue: incoming recruits. question mark is krzlovic. depends on the makeup of the new staff, i'd guess.

wow, a stunner. tinks closed fast on this job. to him it must have seemed like a long home run ball that just kept coming his way, his way, until it was in his glove, and he had the souvenir.

so back to the words of one of my profs at um: problems spell opportunity.

You knew this day was coming, probably sooner than later. Doesn't make it any easier. Sure am going to miss Coach T.

Citay: Excellent perspective. On target.

I wish the best for Tinkle, but Montana is my team. Love to look at this as a prime opportunity for a young coach... and for the continued elevation of the Montana program into the upper Mid-Major ranks.

Congratulations to Wayne Tinkle! He now stands -- I believe -- as the greatest coach of the Montana Grizzlies. That said, I'm a Griz & not a Beaver... so on to the next version of Montana Griz hoops.

Here's my short list, in no specific order:
1. Travis DeCuire (What better place to start your career as the head man?)
2. Freddie Owens (C'mon Freddie; time for you to get your own team!)
3. Jonathan Metzger Jones (you ready, Jono?)
4. Kerry Rupp (Here's a chance to make this team all yours!)

In other words, let's keep Montana basketball in the good hands of a man who's put in his time at Montana as a player and/or coach. Go Griz!

Great list. Scares the hell out of me though thinking about who will be making the decision on who the new HC is going to be. Hope he doesn't fuck this up...

I'm super happy for him. It's sad that we lose him but he deserves the best. Great man with great character and was great for our program. Good luck to him.

Sucks for Hellgate HS, they would have had Tinks son for 2 more years and probably 2 more State championships.

Tres graduates in 2015. He only has one year left of high school.

Shouldn't UM do a national search and look for someone with no connections to UM? No in-breeding. UM will always (almost) be one and done in the tourney if doesn't do a national search (and maybe if it does too). Shouldn't UM take its time and see if the delay can cause the loss of a few top recruits? Sure, UM's one hiring of an outsider didn't work out, but UM could try to getting to .500 with this hire. Ha.

My best to Wayne and the Tinkle family. He's about as "Griz" as it gets and we're fortunate to have had him play for and coach our Griz and raise his family here in Missoula. Some very talented and wonderful people who will be missed. I hope Wayne gets the chance to coach Tres in college....and they both get a chance to return to Dahlberg in the near future.

I like the sound of Travis DeCuire as the next Griz coach.

I'm hearing former Griz assistant Bill Evans as a strong candidate! Knows the program, knows the players GREAT recruiter and helped bring a championship to Missoula.

It's great to see Tinkle garner this promotion. He's a great guy and gave so much to UM basketball. I'll miss him at cage camp too. Congrats to the Tinkle family. Ah well my niece is at OSU so maybe I'll have to pay a visit sometime and take in a Beaver game.

Meanwhile back at the U... I hope we do find a coach with MT connections. I'll take the passion we saw from Stew Morrill, Blaine Taylor, LK or Tinks any day! Obviously they were great hires.

Kind of hate the dream of having Tres a Griz finally die. I hope he plays for his dad though.

I thought he would wait until Tres graduated. He deserves a shot at the big time and big bucks. Too bad the Griz can't find the men's BB equivalent to Robin Selvig. Its the lying about it that sticks in my craw.

If you want a Robin Selvig equivalent, then you hire Robin Selvig. Then you hire Shannon Cate to be head coach of Lady Griz.

I do not see Travis being a Robin Selvig equivalent. He will be moving on after 4-6 years.

Until Montana starts paying their coaches competitively, all (successful) coaches here will move on after a short stay. We won't pay them until we step up in conference/competition.

"Tinkle takes over a program headed toward a rebuild. The Beavers have lost their five top scorers from a team that went 16-16 (8-10 Pac-12) and fell in the first round of the College Basketball Invitational.

OSU hasn't reached the NCAA tournament since 1990, the second longest March Madness drought of any big-conference mainstay. Tinkle's predecessor, Craig Robinson, was fired earlier this month after a six-year run included four CBI appearances and no NIT berths. He went 94-105 (39-69 Pac-12) over that span."
