One way to keep people in the stadium @ halftime

garizzalies said:
how would they know to limit you to only 2 beers? Are they supposed to remember your face?

Just like they do at most breweries. Either punch or mark the wristband. Some people will be able to sneak by the rule but if the vendors do their jobs then it would be easy.

Why all of the hate for the marching band? I understand it may not be your cup of tea, but they are students that put in a lot of extracurricular work to support their & deserve some respect.

I never said I hated them, I said they just aren't my cup of tea. I agree they work hard at what they do and do deserve respect. I don't think I ever disrespected them.
If you respect them, stay in your seat and clap and yell for them like you do the team. After all, they are UM students who work hard for you. They are as much a part of Griz Pride as anyone. Not only their half-time show, but their playing when they can during the game. Sorry UM can't compete w/ the Ohio State band, but it is UM. Stick around and show your respect for all of UM kids.

Christ! They perform in those heavy uniforms in hot weather, play their horns when their lips practically freeze to the mouthpieces in cold weather. Yet, they still have Griz Pride. They never give up, just like the team shouldn't. What a tough bunch! Pay them your respect by clapping and yelling for them. They'll like it.

This!
There seems to be a few more folks who stay in the stadium and enjoy the band at half time this year.

Since this has a lot of references to my group I may as well join the conversation. As far as the Ohio State video game show, I have wanted to do that type of show for several years now but we have a couple of limitations. 1) the arrangements for all of those tunes are very expensive to pay for copyright permission and arranging fees. The show you saw in the video would have cost about 6 times my music budget for the whole season. 2) they have a ton more players available to create those incredible pictures. 3) they are Ohio State.
For the other comments, I agree with many of you. The marching band is not a draw for everyone. That's fine. The halftime show is there for those who want to watch it. I would love it if more people stayed to watch but I believe that the fans should be able to enjoy the game in the way that makes it most worthwhile for them. If you've never been in the stadium at halftime and happen to be there sometime, I invite you to take a moment and watch what we do.
My students work hard and put together a great show. They are enthusiastic supporters of the Griz and will continue to try and add atmosphere to the stadium right up to the end of the game. I appreciate all of you who show them respect and recognize the number of hours it takes to prepare all the music and coordinate 132 people on the field, hitting precise sets and playing an instrument the whole time. However, we are a part of the college football atmosphere. The team is the star of the show.
Lastly, GrizMusician is correct. I am always open to constructive comments. I used a comment on this forum to make an adjustment a number of years ago that has been a great change. Before I got here 9 years ago the band lined up in pregame from sideline to sideline and the team had to run almost to the padded wall to get to the sideline. Someone complained about it in a post and I realized that it was a simple fix that made the whole team entrance easier. We want to be a positive part of Griz gameday and I'm always trying to improve everything we do. Go Griz!

UMGMB- It's great to see you pay attention to the fans and look for constructive criticism. I wish the rest of the Grizzly game day crew did the same. Between stale Monte, stale music, stale pre- game and promotional videos, and stale advertisements, its great to see one element of the game day that is receptive to change.

P.S.- I liked the pink today!

who was the idiot that took Griz Vision off the field when the refs were stretching the chains to measure for a 1st down and went to an add for AAA?

The band is better than the team, this year. Thank you, for that! I believe the search for a new coach will be forthcoming. You should be considered. It is entertainment, is it not? good job.

Thanks for posting "Doc". I always appreciate your insight regarding the most excellent GMB. Great half time show yesterday too! The sound was amazing. Props to you and all the members of the GMB. It's a pleasure to have the GMB as part of the whole college game day experience. :thumb:

Wait so your telling me there are college bands out there that don't just do jazz numbers from 'famous' conductors we have never heard and make abstract random shapes on the field? They actually try to entertain by doing something contemporary and interactive for th crowd? *mind blown*

College bands that, as Dr. Griggs stated above, have much more funding and staff to conduct the same kind of shows Ohio State did.

I still endorse what I'm sure everyone else is thinking: Just let them have beer in the stadium.

I must say, as a current member of the GMB, I am pleased to see that more people are staying for our halftime performance. I remember my first game last year, not that many people were there. I want to actually publicly thank all of you who do stay to watch the band. :thumb:
To those of you who don't, I understand if the GMB isn't your favorite part of the game, or if you don't care about it. But why would you go on and publicly BASH the band?? We are there for everyone's entertainment! I'm kind of sick of seeing people post that beer is more important than the band as well. Ok, go poison your livers, I don't care. But don't bash the band for the work we do to put on a show for the fans that actually care about us. Oh, and for those of you who say we don't try to involve the crowd, we do. We dance, we clap, do horn moves, among other things. We do that to try to get you as the crowd involved and dance along or clap along.
Again, to our supporters, thank you. I always get a huge rush during the pre-game parade and when we rush from the tunnel into pre-game. The cheering fans make me feel appreciated. And I must say, it is absolutely amazing when I can yell "Let's go GRIZ!" and I have 50 - 60 fans look at me and cheer and clap. Another thing I love, the little kids that get so into our shows. Last week, I think I saw upwards of 15 younger fans holding their hands out for High-5's and knuckle bumps. Hopefully some of them are even future GMB members ;) And the kids who get excited when the band responds to their waves, high-5s, and knuckle bumps are the ones that make my day so much brighter. There was one game where a father was holding his son, he was maybe 3 or 4, on the field after pre-game. The boy was watching us walk by and I stopped and held out my hand for a high-5. He of course, high-5'd me back, and then turned to his dad and had the biggest smile on his face. THOSE are the moments I remember from marching band. When a fan is truly happy. And if I can be part of someone's happiness, I feel like I have done and job well done.
As for our music selection, I must say I agree with some of you. We should be playing more known/popular music. And I think you will all very much enjoy the upcoming show, since it is a lot of music you all should have heard of.
Ok, I'll get off my soapbox now. But to those of you who don't enjoy the band or don't really "care" about what we do, please stop bashing us on here. It just makes us feel bad.
