One Coach's View of Program and Pflu

Here's part of an email response from one of the asst football coaches to a complaining fan. This was in Tokyo's released emails. Note in particular these phrases:

"I never worked on a Football staff, or worked for a head coach, that places a greater emphasis on student athlete conduct"

"I took this job at Montana ... based solely on his [Pflu's} character, and the kind of program he would run."

"I knew ... there would be Integrity “at every turn”.

"I would not have taken this job if I thought this was a win at all cost program"

"We have a Head Football Coach, staff, and team, that all of Missoula can be proud of. I could’nt be more proud to work here and be a part of it."

"In 25+ years of coaching, I have worked for 8 different university’s. I can assure you that I never worked on a Football staff, or worked for a head coach, that places a greater emphasis on student athlete conduct. We have mandatory evening study table, academic tutors, and regular class checks. Our Football staff goes out on campus and conducts these personally. We also have behavior contracts for those that need even greater supervision and accountability. You might not know that the University of Montana football team currently ranks #1 in the Big Sky conference in graduation rate. A full 12% ahead of the 2nd place school. Player’s are expected to be punctual, and to attend, all mandatory team related activities such as practice, training room treatment, lifting weights, etc…. They are all held accountable if they do not do so.

I have known Coach Pflugrad for over 10 years. I took this job at Montana, campus unseen, based solely on his character, and the kind of program he would run. I knew how he would treat me, and that there would be Integrity “at every turn”. I would not have taken this job if I thought this was a win at all cost program, and he would not have been hired here to begin with by this university. As we tell all prospective recruits when they visit our campus “we have 2 goals in our FB program here at UM, win championships, and earn a degree from the University of Montana.” We demand excellence in both area’s, and do not allow one to compromise the other.

I hope you can give second thought to your email after reading this. We have a Head Football Coach, staff, and team, that all of Missoula can be proud of. I could’nt be more proud to work here and be a part of it.

Respectfully,

Rob Oviatt
Head Strength Coach / Football"

Pflu and O'Day got thrown under the bus. To see these two poeple treated this way just makes me sick. The football program took it on the chin for a situation that existed system wide at this and just about every other college campus. Engstrom threw these two people to the wolves through no fault of their own. It was all about "optics".

Its over................move on.

This tells me all I need to know about this coach..................................:coffee:

Sounds like a guy who bounces around a lot (8 jobs in 25 years) and doesn't want to burn any bridges.

That said, his credentials are impeccable, and I hope he sticks around UM.

Did Oviatt look at the recent graduations rate of the Griz football team.....only 7 out of 23 seniors graduated this year....that's roughly 30%!!! That's tops in the Big Sky??? WHAT.. by 12%??? Hey I know that Phlu gave him a job as a strength coach but that's no excuse for a full blown love affair....just sayin

Surely the 8 Griz who took off early for NFL camps will return later and finish their degrees, just like 8 bob... oh wait.

Student and student-athletes are given 6 years to complete their degree to be counted in the graduation rate. So that 30% will end up being quite higher as more of the seniors finish up their degree in the next year or two.

Why the hell would anyone take the word of an actual insider, someone with a part of their life invested in the program instead of a slew of idiot savants whose only apparent talent is their ability to log-in and post on eGriz?

Lemming............much?

And who was the most vocal participant on this site after BobbyH. went off to UNLV and Robin Pflugrad got the job?..extolling the virtues thereof of Bobby's successor. Maybe someone should jog your memory there and canvass your previous posts of a couple years ago. Might be rather revealing as to finding you saying one thing then and something quite different these days; then having the audacity of calling someone out as a "lemming," as I understand in context: "doomed conformist" - a member of a large group of people who blindly follow one another on a course of action that will lead to destruction for all of them. And your avoidance of being a "lemming" yourself is to portray hypocrisy?

I can't spell lemming.

I prefer lime or lemon in my ginn, if that counts.

I liked both fired men. Still do.

What direction will the new female AD take us?

Perhaps a man hating female coach for football?

Would you smart posting Griz experts point me in the "new direction" ---------I be damn lost!
