On the field after the game

My 7-yr-old son Blake had just attended his first ever Griz game and was so excited through out the game and especially when we won. He couldn't believe we got to go down on the field and as soon as we got there he just started sprinting across the field with the biggest smile on his face. we ran into Athletic Director Kent Haslam and that's when this trip to the field went off the charts. "Do you want to go up the tunnel," he asked. YEAH! Took Blake by the hand and up we went.

In Bozeman they ask the kids, "do you want to see the Trail of Tears back to the fieldhouse?"

Cool thread. This kind of thing happens every game at many stadiums, and i dont think many people realize it. 95+% of college football players are genuine, down to earth, classy guys who take their responsibility as a role model seriously. Thanks for spotlighting it....

Trumaine is the only player that I was not impressed with last time down on the field in 2011. JJ, Dan Moore, Peter Nyguen and Brody McKnight all were super nice and generous with their time. Wanted to go down on the field Saturday but my ride was leaving. Next home game my son Jordan wants to meet Jordan Tripp and Jordan Johnson.

Might as well thrown Jordan Harper into that meeting. :thumb:

All this is great to hear. I want to add to it. Does anyone realize what a great group of players and coaches are with the basketball teams? Can people please take the time to get close to the basketball programs too? It is a shame these teams go unnoticed, and take such a huge backseat to football. I love each of the programs. :thumb:

You do realize both Henderson and Coleman were kicked off the team for disciplinary issues this summer, correct? That's about 25% of the contributing players.

You do realize Wayne Tinkle proved his point and let both those guys go in the offseason? It has to be very damn bad for the football team to actually let a player go. Wayne certainly tolerates less than the football coaches do. Just saying, we are damn fortunate to have the coaches and players in place we do as fans. I really do wish the community would get behind the basketball program more.

I suspect if they do better than getting blown out by about 50 pts in a b-ball game the community would get behind the basketball team more.

I have always enjoyed mingling with the players, coaches and other fans on the field after home games. I think it is just another great aspect of the entire Griz game experience. This time it was even better. My 7-yr-old son Blake had just attended his first ever Griz game and was so excited through out the game and especially when we won. He couldn't believe we got to go down on the field and as soon as we got there he just started sprinting across the field with the biggest smile on his face. I took some photos of him and then ran into Coach Delaney. We had golfed together when the GSA came out to Sidney in 2012 and was surprised he remembered me. He went out of his way to talk with my son who pretty much just stood there with his mouth wide open. I asked him if there was a player he wanted to meet and he said "let's find the biggest Grizzly." That was easy. Big 'ol Poehls was easy to spot and we headed over. What a nice guy. He dropped down to one knee and visited with Blake and posed for a photo. The look on Blake's face was priceless. Then we ran into Athletic Director Kent Haslam and that's when this trip to the field went off the charts. "Do you want to go up the tunnel," he asked. YEAH! Took Blake by the hand and up we went. There are painted pictures of past Griz stars on the wall, including all the Griz currently in the NFl. Got to the top of the tunnel and Blake spotted a stack of like 80 pizzas. I told them Grizzlies are always hungry, especially after a big game. We headed back down as several players were heading to the locker room and ran into co-OC Scott Graag. We had played golf at the GSA function in Sidney just a few months ago and talked briefly. Coach was pretty happy and it was great to be able to congratulate him in person. We went back out onto the field and I really wanted to get a pic of Blake with Jordan Johnson. Again, it was easy. Jordan was greeting fans, signing autographs for kids and posing for pics. He looked so happy and relaxed. I thanked him for taking the time to take pics and told him how proud we all are of him sticking with the Griz through the past year and that we drove over 600 miles to see him play his first game back on the field. He was smiling the whole time and seemed to really be enjoying the moment with the fans. The trip down to the field capped off a great Griz game day experience for me and my son. GO GRIZ!

I knew I was going to get this wrong answer.

Briefly:

First off, the Griz football team would not lose to USC by 50 pts. Secondly, even if the Griz football team did (which they wouldn't), that loss would be by 7 scores. Whereas the B-ball team lost by 25 scores to get that same 50 points. Not the same thing. And most importantly for the community excitement arguement, no team that gets throttled like a punching bag is going to get a first-rate following. Just not going to happen, anywhere, anytime.

I didn't say that the round ball team doesn't deserve the community's support. Board, see what I am dealing with here? :lol: Of course they deserve it. And they certainly have mine and plenty of others.

My point is that they don't have the religous-like following that the football team has becasue they aren't as good as the football team.

And here's why:

Both are Div 1 mid-major programs.
Both do well in conference.
Both win conference championships.

But here is the difference for the supports levels.

While the football team is either the #1 or #2 mid-major team in the nation (or even close to it) a lot of times over the years since 1995, the basektball team can't even come close to saying the same thing.

And every year in March Madness there are countless victories by mid-majors over the big schools, but unfortunately it's virtually never Montana. In fact quite the opposite. there have been some very embarrassing losses.

The basketball team needs better showings, like the top-tier mid-majors show, in the NCAA tournament, then and only then will you see a religous-like following for Montana basketball. Is there any doubt about that?

Montana is a mid-major University.

And you may want to get a clue, because Montana basektball has NOT been at the very top of their polls (not even close) like Montana football has been for almost 20 years. Gotta love your 3 year comment though.

Everyone agrees. It's just that many of us think it's wrong.

And no matter how you slice it, it'd be like the football team going 11-0 and people not following them because they get curb stomped in a BCS bowl. That would be an apples to apples comparison. Like it or not, our FB team does not play at the same DI level our BB team does.
