On-Side Kick Question

It looked to me like if they would have teed off on Kaufman instead of going after the ball, the ball would have most likely gone OOB.

You're correct. I think they blocked the 3 guys inside of Kaufman. You can't block everyone. Onside kicks don't usually go that far, or go that high that close to the sideline. In a do-over, they'd definitely block Kaufman. Great kick. Great play by Kaufman. Lucky bounce of the ball back in the direction of EWU.

I have a noble idea...just put people who can field the dam ball on an on-side kick and there won't be an issue.

Eastern had a perfect kick and a 6'5 dude with hops spike out of the UM receiver's hands. It was a perfectly executed play, I'm not sure UM could have done anything differently and recovered the ball.

The only think they could have done different, IMO, is put a body on Kaufmann so he could not get past the first line to make that play....

You can bet that there will be different players lined up next time when an on-side kick is expected. I believe all learned a valued lesson this time. With a young team and inexperienced coaching staff, (In the positions they are in, the coaches) They are learning as they go. Will they learn the lessons? We'll see. I believe this year will present many trials for this team and staff. If they learn from their mistakes, OUTSTANDING! Saying it was a perfect kick, well, that is what you have to plan for everytime you line up your team. No matter the score!

I think that you missed the OP's point. If you called a fair catch, regardless of how many times the ball bounces, it might create just a fraction of a second of hesitation which may be enough to secure the ball before getting hit. There doesn't seem to be a penalty for calling for one when you are not entitled so it seems to be worth a try in the future.

If you're in a situation desperate enough to warrant an onside kick, would a possible 15 yard penalty deter you from going all out? Doubtful.

Which is why the rule is stupid.

Doubtful is right....but they might!

Just curious, but what if we would have just batted the ball out of bounds? Would there be a penalty and if so, what would it be? And even if we were penalized, would we still retain possession?

We would have gotten a penalty and they would have to re-kick the ball..

You sure about that? Seems to me that if it's touched by either team and then goes out of bounds it's just a dead ball and would be awarded to the offense at the spot.

I think I remember Delaney saying on the Coaches show that someone on the outside missed an assignment and took an inside guy who ended up getting double covered. think he said they would re-coach that point
